Good Saturday and welcome to the weekend. We have a soggy day on tap and this is the kickoff of a not so nice Super Bowl weekend of weather. All eyes are searching for anything looking remotely like winter and next week is going to try to turn our heads. Winter is such a flirt, sometimes.
Rain is the name of the game out there today. Low pressure is slowly working across the plains states and this is causing widespread rain to break out today. The rain will be locally heavy at times today into tonight. There could be some rumbles of thunder across our southern counties.
Temps today will show a nice little north-south gradient once again. Readings in the north won’t stray too far from 40 while temps in the south soar into the 50s. Your tracking tools are all at the top of the page, so give them a look.
Super Bowl Sunday will start out with soggy conditions and chilly temps with readings in the upper 30s. There could even be a wet flake trying to mix in with the rain. Things will try to slowly dry out during the afternoon hours… especially across the north.
The changes for next week look to show up a little quicker than first thought. Colder air will be in place for the first half of the week. Energy hanging back across the southern plains will then try to work northeast into the Tennessee Valley by Wednesday and this could become a snow maker for parts of the Ohio Valley and that may include us. Take a look at the GFS Ensembles to see what I’m talking about…
All of the models are now showing a similar setup and a few of them are becoming more robust with this wave of low pressure working in here. That has the look of an overrunning setup and is one for us to keep an eye on.
It’s also worth noting all the models are going toward a similar setup to what the earlier run of the European was showing. They are not to that extreme… but do imply some very nice blocking setting up leading to a big dip in the jet stream across the eastern part of the country. The Polar Vortex shows up well on the latest GFS run…
That is a nice ridge extending way up into western Canada with the deep trough across the eastern part of the country. That’s about all I can tell you at this point… but that’s a pattern we haven’t seen much of this winter and is usually good for cold and snow lovers.
I will update things later today. Have a great Saturday and take care.
Thanks Chris for the Sat. morning update. Still won’t beleive it until I see/feel it. Winter has dodged us all season long. Hopefully it runs us right over the next few weeks…..We will see.
THINK SNOW!
oooo….the winds of change! cautiously optimistic is the best I can right now. Everyone have a great Super Bowl weekend & go G-Men.
can “do” was supposed to be in there…
Have you ever heard the story of the little boy that cried wolf LOL…..just kidding!! Not trying to be snide, just realistic for this year. Either way, I’m fine with whatever hand we’re dealt but thanks for the update none the less 🙂
Hate to say this but I am afraid it will be the same old song and dance. Next week will probably be in the fifties.
Thanks for the update, Chris. I am not going to give up hope on getting some cold weather in here. Of COURSE I hope for snow to go with it. But, I will take the cold, if we can get it in here. We have a bigger need of that than of snow. I hope the maps are not teasing us yet again. But, whatever, I appreciate having your blog here to keep me updated! Have a great Saturday, everyone, and as bjenks says ……THINK SNOW! (or at least some cold weather) 😉
I gurantee u it ain going be in 50s next by end next week.
u all need to chill out with ill believe it when i see it crap, fact is whats coming aint a ARMAGGADON but will be WINTER weather, u all act like CB and models are saying 2 feet of snow and 5 below zero, now that would be something to get
Rolo….It happened in Europe?????
So instead of cold rain, the area will see a “wintry mix”. To avoid more salt for that, I choose cold rain 🙂
your wrong
I’m the eternal optimist: If December and January can be as warm as they’ve been why couldn’t February turn cold and snowy? Right? Right? Fingers crossed!
Folks lets be happy that we’re inside a week abc the models are showing snow for us wednesday lol. Gotta feeling this system will deliver accumulating snow to us 😉
****and****
The timing of the cooler, rainy weather stinks. Low 60’s through the week and crappy weather on the weekend. If Ma Nature is changing the seasons, she needs to be a little more considerate and change her schedule for outdoor activities(fishing, hiking).
I agree if we had to have 60’s in wintertime, at least it could have been on the weekend for a nice zoo trip with the family. 🙂 Ah well, what ya gonna do?
oh my goodness you people are a trip, LOL. Relax! Whatever will be will be, don’t give up hope so easily and enjoy every day as a blessing no matter what it holds. 🙂
Where are all our blog Mets hmmmm…? what are your feelings on the next week or so? I know most of you were saying winter was over and the warm pattern wasnt going to change. Anybody changed your thinking on it in light of present data?
Old wife’s tale. If we don’t have winter in January we will have it in March
Here’s a link from NWS Fairbanks about the extreme winter Alaska has been having – extreme even by Alaska standards. Ouch!

NWS forecasting mid 40s to 50s through next friday. I guess we shall see
I agree with bjenks! I’ll believe it when I see it!!
You all know it’ll come in March and April when the trees are trying to bloom, everything will be trying to bloom them.. BAM! No spring either!!
The cold and/or wintry weather looks to arrive right on schedule…. I told you all a couple of weeks ago that I had several out of town athletic events that I had to drive my daughter to… well, they start next weekend. After all this warm weather we’ve had, looks like wintry weather will arrive in time for our trip up north, sigh. Perhaps I should save Chris the time and trouble of looking at all the models and just send him our travel schedule? 🙂
Lets give the models a couple more days and see what the trend lines are moving towards the future. Every time I have bought stock into the upcoming cold & snow forecast I have lost big time.
Models have been wrong a week away all winter. Seems like every week the forecast has been warm now and snow coming up on the weekend. Almost every weekend has been mid-40’s and rain. Better get here now because time is running out. I know Europe was cold, but that was in January. Mid-Febuary average high temp here is in the 50’s. Snow not going to stick around unless we get historic temp drops.
Weather in Europe was last couple of weeks into this week after they too had a very mild beginning to winter. I say bring on Summer and 90’s as we are currently living spring.
Just saying the weather has already been strange and it just may get worse. If not, 50-60 in February is fine also…
We are looking at mid-Feb. at best for snow to get here. Avg. temps are on the rise from here on out. May get some cold, but not going to drop below normal for very long periods. Still could get a big snow though.
Wymt also stays mild through next weekend
Going to try and be positive for change next week. Ready to see some snow fall.
The Groundhog is onto something…SNOWMISER has a direct line to the “HOGS” homefront… 🙂
Images of the valentine day snowstorm back in the mid 80’s is popping up in my head…seeing the models keep playing with the Idea that a MAJOR snowstorm will affect some where in the east during the sweetheart holiday…lol…talk about sweetheart..how sweet it would be to see 3″ in diameter (heart-shaped)snowflakes falling….LOL…LOL… 🙂
Don’t give up hope because the ONLY snow I saw for the first 30 years of my life was in February 1973. That was in Houston and we got two good snows. If decent snows can hit Houston in February, then surely it can happen in Kentucky! Also, I recall the horrible ice storm of 2003 started out as rain, just like today’s rain, on February 15th. It stayed below freezing for several days.
It ain’t over ’til it’s over!
I just read that the last time it actually snowed In Rome Italy back in 85′ and 86′ the same 2 winters provided extreme artic outbreaks in the Eastern U.S….hmmm…Rome just had a very sizeable snowstorm the other day…first since 1986… so is the warning signs flashing??? could be
I was only about a year old in 85, but have come across stories of Orlando area farmers that not only lost their crop, even the citrus trees (full of water) froze up and were literally exploding. Sounded like gunshots during the night :-O Also, San Antonio of all places got a foot of snow – yes, San Antonio, Texas!
Video out of Rome is surreal looking! This is the first measurable snow event since the mid-1980s, but Rome has had a some trace snowfalls since.
Was it after mid-Febuary when the extreme artic temps hit here in 85′ 86′ ? Just wondering?
It was late January
In Feb 94′ we had record breaking wind chills.. I remember because we were at my father-in-laws funeral.
I mean Jan’ 94
I must say I’m excited to see what the weather holds the rest of the season.
Chris, winter isn’t a flirt, the models have just been straight up leading us on! Haha
I’m just gonna say this, if we have another Feb ’98 in march with all the leaves in the trees, I don’t wanna hear complaints about power being out, cause it certainly would be. (I will admit it would be nice to see 2 feet of partly cloudy lol)
What a loss in the meteorology world today. Andy Gabrielson was killed in a car accident with a drunk driver driving on the wrong side of the road. RIP andy :/
