Good afternoon everyone. This winter storm is playing out very close to the last call map I put out last night. Reports of more than 3″ of snow continue to trickle in from southern and southeastern Kentucky with heavy snow still falling. Some of these areas will see 6″ or more before this winds down later this evening. This will likely end up causing a few power problems before all is said and done.
If you have been following my twitter feed, you are seeing all the pics I’m getting from across the region that show the snow blanketing everything… roads included.
The sharp northern cutoff to the accumulating snow is alive and well and folks living around Interstate 64 are missing out on the action by less than 25 miles in some cases. Might be a good day to take a road trip to the south.
Keep posting the weather conditions where you live and I will drop by for another update later. Until then…. your twitter feed will continue to blow up. Take care.
4 inches of snow in southern Laurel Co.
The only white stuff in my yard is me waving the surrender flag for the winter of 2012!
Up to 4 inches now in parts of Leslie County, folks on ridgetops now reporting upwards of 5 inches, snow still coming down hard. Looks like deformation band setting up over southeastern, KY! Beginning to worry about power lines.
I hate to ask this but what is the deformation zone?
Strong band of snow the easiest way to describe it..Just measured 3 inches and still snowing, has lighten up some..noticed the wind is blowing also but not shaking the snow off the tree limbs..Which is bad concerning power if it keeps snowing..
power is already out in some areas and we have had problems as well around the knox whitley area
NOT A THING near Lex,not even a sprinkle. Time for SPRING
Agree!
Continued mod/heavy snow in London, with at least 3 inches so far. Sorry to the folks who missed out on this one, but my kids are so glad that we didn’t miss out. Snowmen are coming soon!
only about an inch so far has fallen over most of harlan more in the mountains
We’ve got close to 4 on my end of the county!
2 half to 3 inches of snow in northern clay county , just north of highway 11 and 421 area. had a tree down at 11 /421 junction, and some kind of line has come down at the bottom of the hill from where i live. its not broken all the way down, but its hanging very low to the ground.
I am in Manchester city limits with 3 inches in the back yard with the snow steadily falling. I’m hoping to hit the 6” mark at least and anything over that would be icing on the cake!!! I’m sure tickled with what I have if it quits right now, considering there are many who would love to have what’s in my yard!!! Can’t be too greedy! 😛
The roads are bad in Laurel County. Wrecks everywhere. One of the salt trucks is now stuck on East 80. It’s best to stay home if you can.
All clear in Boyle County as usual. Bring on spring!
SEKY folks enjoy the snow for us! Dry as the proverbial bone here in S. Jessamine Co., haven’t seen even a solitary flake here in snow lovers limbo…
Same in Montgomery.
On Whitehall Hill here in Clay County, been out with the kids sledding, we have nearly 5 inches in our yard and as I type this, it is still snowing moderate to heavy. I wiped off a place when I went out, and while I was out (a little over 30 minutes), it snowed almost half an inch. Old Chris Bailey hung right in there. This storm is not done yet. Appreciate you Chris.
there is blue on the radar over me but nothing falling! I want some snow!!!!!!!!!!!
close to 4″ here in Barbourville on my deck anyways, little less in the yard due to rain earlier…but snow continues to fall…looks awesome…had a rough drive from corbin snowcovered roads plows are out in full force but they are having a hard time keeping up
just got a report from a spotter in Barbourville of 2.5″ …lol…he must be measuring in a mud puddle…lol… I have double that easy at my house!!!
no thats an accurate measurement Tim we aren’t all blessed to live on a mountain
Also, having widespread mountains tend to inhibit tornado genesis, eastern ky a good example.
Not the same as saying mountains stop already existing tornadoes, far from it. The good folks at NWS Jackson mention a May 1995 twister that traversed almost 30 miles through Perry and Knott Counties, just barely missing Hazard airport but otherwise mostly a rural damage path to trees and isolated structures.
Nothing in Morehead….
Hasn’t been and probably won’t be, what a bust for Rowan County.
Neil….would change places with you if I could! I absolutely hate snow! Being from Florida, I do not drive when it snows or gets close to 32•! But, if you are a snowlover, this is a good one here!
Feel free to ship it my way!
I’m not sure how any meterologists can say this has “played out” pretty close to what they said last night. I live in Russell County where 1-4 inches was predicted last night. We barely have a dusting on the ground…Everyone missed this one.
They always make it sound as if they were right all along, when in reality their forecast flopped including Chris baileys whether he wants to admit to it or not. I’m done with this winter, I’m tired of mets trying to cover their butts when they get it wrong.
True, forecasting snow totals 4 hours before it starts is NOWcasting!!!
Not a thing in Estill!! Had my hopes up and it has been a total bust.
Just heard 75 shut down northbound at Ky. line, 3 mile backup at Jellico mountain
i think its both ways
Regular reader, occasional poster. See y’all next December!
Never know what could happen the next few weeks, like March 1993, even if the trend is not all that great for more snow.
Also, peak severe wx season is coming up.

Come in and chat with us.
Keavy has a little over 4″
Flurried for about an hour and a half in Richmond earlier. Right now, not a thing falling from the sky and not a thing on the ground, roads completely dry.
Measured 2 1/2 inches on my deck here in London. Doesn’t count the fact that it probably snowed for an hour before it stuck because of all the rain prior. 32* and still snowing. The satellite is covered in snow and the kids wanna go play in it. Def gonna be Snow Day tomorrow! (yes we were scheduled for school on Pres Day…)
NWS Nashville putting up local storm reports:

Not surprising the Cumberland Plateau getting good snow, such as Crossville. But one oddball so far is 2 inches at Oak Hill, reported by emergency management there. Oak Hill is south of Nashville but still in Davidson County. And yet farther north to Bowling Green to Etown KY can’t buy a snowflake.
Since we’re not getting any snow in my neck of the woods, I wouldn’t mind Paducah’s weather right now at all: sunny and pushing 50 degrees!
About 3-4 inches NE part of the county, outside Cumberland and still coming down fast. It has thinned, but it’s still pouring.
Been snowing since about 11:00 and nothing to show for it. Very disappointed! Irvine has missed it again. Don’t know what the mountains around us look like, but if they have one flake on the ground, that’s more than we have.
Laurel County covered in 3-5 inches county wide. Numerous travel issues, stay off the roads. Snow day called for all those in the area who weren’t already off. Fantastic packing snow!
Been snowing heavy since 1:00, have about 4″ in southern Pike County.
Posts not going through…
Post longer than a few words no making it through…
5 inches of snow 2 miles north of Harlan Co. line in Letcher Co. Still coming down moderately.
Fourth, and much shorter try …
Is this as good as forecasting can get? No disrespect intended. Winter forecasting doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
knox, laurel, whitley county schools closed monday…and many more will follow im sure
Is winter forecasting a lot more difficult than the the rest of the year? Some organizations pay money for forecasts and use them to make important decisions.
Blind squirrels are exceptions of course…
CLAY CO special there off for PRESIDENT DAY!!!
got 5.2 inxhes west 80 in clay county.
None in Louisville. None in Glasgow either, where 1-4 is predicted now, and 4-8 was predicted earlier.
I think this forecast was way off for everyone, and it was updated very late, and then called as “close.” I understand meteorology is a fickle lady, but this time around it seems like everyone was reaching for something to predict. That low must have really dropped for the snowfall to be for our entire, and now it is moved completely to the East.
I’m like everyone else…I’m done with any kind of mention of snow since it isn’t following through. Bring on sun and Spring! 🙂
Usually you guys up north get snow, when we get rain. So I’m happy!
We have 5′ now and still coming down, just not as heavy.
Snow dome wins again I-64 area, 15 years with no snows larger than 4 in.! Hope you folks south & east realize how lucky you are.
I would not call us lucky thousands are w/o power and here i sit praying that the lights stay on at my house. I would happily trade you.
Any chance for wraparound snow for SE Ky tonight. Looks like the snow will be thru here by 10 or so tonight
I guess the term “very close” is very subjective 😉
Well, we do have a LOT of salt on the roads. No snow.
4-5 inches in southern laurel county next to the knox county line, and still snowing.
do you live on 229 ?
nothing in morgan co…..
Louisville = nothing zip nada no snow at all….not really even that cold…. I am throwing in my hat and surrender to the Winter with no snow.
Not one drop of ANYTHING here is Jessamine county. Although I wish we would have gotten hammered by snow, at least the ground is FINALLY starting to dry up from all the winter RAIN. I am ready for spring and storm season…. BRING IT ON!!!!
jim over at wymt still has morgan co in the 4 to 6 inch boy he better change that we have nothing…..
I have a bright blue sky in Owensboro. I also have electricity and no worries on how to get to work tomorrow. I’m just looking for the positives 🙂
…and probably wishing you was back in Corbin today! 🙂
haha Joey. I gotta say that Corbin(no offense to those there) is the last place I would ever wanna go back to!!
8 solid inches on ridge tops here in Leslie County. Up to 5 inches being reported in the valleys. Roads are treacherous and thousands are without power in Leslie and Perry Countis. Moderate snow still falling.
NOTHING in Richmond. Way off on this forecast……
Still snowing here almost have made it to 5 inches !!
A lot of folks in central ky would be getting a ton of snow if this virga actually was snow. It’s been hovering over us since late this morning.
Morgan County seems to be the cutoff…have a trace here….1/2″ maybe….sorry Frosty….sorry meteorologists….if this was Las Vegas, you crapped out.
31F and cloudy
snowman our ground is brown we got nothing
No, the forecast was “very close”, so either I am looking at different maps, or the term “very close” has new and broader meaning 😉
In my back yard in Johnson County we have nearly 4 inches and still snowing….wish everyone could enjoy this snow seeing as how we all love it so much….good luck next time guys 🙁
Looks like one more batch of snow to swing thru se ky should take my total snowfall over 5″ or at least it should.
GFS day 8-15 showing major cold for most of U.S. so hopefully more snow chances will be on the table! Especially for those who missed out today.
Congrats on the snow Tim. I’ve decided that I am truly ready for Spring and truly do hope that I don’t get any 🙂
about 4.5 inches in Western Pike County with moderate to heavy snow still falling. Roads are treacherous including US 23!
only 1 1/2 – 2 inches here in JC! Bummer!
The northern cutoff to the snow is simply amazing. I’m just off exit 83 in southern Madision county and haven’t seen so much as one snowflake. Relatives in Mt. Vernon are saying about an inch (perhaps a touch more by now) and then, of course, others seeing much more just to the south of that. Perhaps us in central Ky. will get in on some snow love next time. I think, in general, the winter of 2011-12 might attact more snowbirds to the state, lol, considering how hard it is to get snow and how warm, relatively speaking, it’s been this winter.
Wow, Blizzard Tim, we sure hope you are right!!! I will take a look at the GFS and let’s all keep our fingers crossed! Congrats on SE Ky with all of your snow!!! Sounds so fun!
7 inches here, lots of trees and powerlines down.
