Good Sunday to one and all. Our wild weather weekend is about to end on a wintry note with a swath of accumulating snow tonight into early Monday. This should be enough to cause slick travel and lead to some cancellations and delays. Yes… this is happening two days after one of the worst tornado outbreaks to hit the state in recent memory.
Much colder air is in place today and temps may not reach 40 in some areas. Clouds will increase this afternoon as a clipper dives in from the northwest. Snow ill develop along and north of the track and some of the snow could be locally heavy at times. This has the look of a 2″-4″ swath of snow… but where? The models disagree in the placement of this band…
GFS
There is a slight difference in the exact track of the clipper and that small deviation can make a big difference in how much snow you get where you live. It is important to note that both models are showing 4″+ totals within the heart of the snow swath. I will have a snow forecast map out later today.
This is not good news for the thousands of people who continue to pick up the pieces from the recent deadly tornadoes. Many people are without power and temperatures today are going to struggle to get to 40 in some areas and will stay in the low and mid 30s for highs Monday.
Here’s the latest on the tornadoes from the various National Weather Service survey teams…

The stats that really jump out at me… Two separate 160mph tornadoes is amazing to see. The West Liberty tornado was a mile wide which was on the ground for 34 miles. The Salyersville tornado stayed on the ground for an amazing 45 miles.
This outbreak was historic and will rank up there with the worst to ever hit the state of Kentucky.
I will have more updates through the day. Have a great Sunday and take care.
Bill, Welcome back to WYKT. I want to take the time to honor you for all you do for all of us. We will never know how many lives you saved yesterday by staying on top of the storms and tornadoes. Kudos to you for being a caring person and allowing folks like myself to have a blog to stay informed of things, whether good or bad. Keep up the good work and look forward to all the future posts and blogs.
Bill?
I was wondering about that also!
maybe you guys should read the commend directly below this before responding as within 4 min he quickly was aware of his mistake and apologized
My bad. I was half awake.
OHHHHHHHHHHHH BOYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!! Now I up and done it.
Who is BILL? Being new down here, I don’t really know anyone and Chris is the ONLY weather person I know in Kentucky.
Anyways……………..I meant to say CHRIS…not Bill. I don’t know any Bills down here in Ky. LOL
SORRY FOLKS…..
SORRY CHRIS BAILEY 🙁
Anything but Bill! I’m sure he will forgive you 😉
Don’t feel bad. I called a hurricane ‘Bob’. That’s my son’s name.
LOL It’s easy to do. I’m sure Chris will forgive you. 🙂
Thanks Chris! I’m sure this past event will go down in the weather history books. Still praying for those affected.Looking forward to watching you Monday on WKYT.
Chris praying for your home town and the folks in W LIBERTY.
down this way its BAD as well as 5 people are dead in Laurel co.
never seen anything like this, but when u have no snow pack and nothing to hold warm temps down u get this type weather this time year.
Our county is devastated and I cannot imagine that things will ever be the same. I’ve never witnessed such destruction and tragedy and my heart is so heavy for my friends and neighbors. From the beginning of this outbreak I was in complete denial despite what I knew could happen since we NEVER see anything remotely close to this here. The shock seems to still be here for me and I’m not sure that I’ll ever look at tornadoes the same again. Prayers are with all of those involved.
As CB has touched on, this outbreak is way off the charts for eastern KY, nothing even close to it in recorded history. I’m sure a lot of us on this board were hoping you and your family were ok, very good to hear from you.
First time you will hear this from me– I hope we get NO snow. 🙁
Prayers, and my heart, go out to all those who are suffering, who have lost everything, who are trying to pick up the pieces today… I am amazed though, at the strength and determination of the people of KY. All this devastation, and still they get up and keep on going. I am awed by them, and deeply respect their heart and integrity.
It will take alot more than this to keep amazing people like this down.
I pray the blessings and peace and comfort of Christ over you all.♥♥♥♥
Great post! I totally agree!
Since KY winter is full of irony, we will probably get several inches.
Prayers go out to all of those hit by the storm. Trying to find out about Darryl Howard and his wife Lorrain. If anybody knows them, please let me know. They are good people. May God be with the all of us. There was a few flurries here inGeorgetown about 30 minutes ago. BTW, Mr. Howard and wife live in Salyersville.
thought I would share this montage put together by WAVE-3 TV out of Louisville, that shows the destruction of Henryville’s EF-4 tornado. If anyone sees a montage of all the other tornadoes that hit Kentucky, please post them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNiUTszFRKw&feature=youtu.be
Please post links to the tornado events in eastern Ky. Louisville media is reporting on the southern IN storms mostly. We are thinking you all and are just looking for information.
I put that in there…above the link asked people to post any links of tornado montage in Kentucky. Hopefully, we find some.
If you go to CB’s Facebook page, he’s posted almost
200 pictures of Magoffin and Johnson County. Also, try the FB pages of all the Lexington stations. They have many pictures posted, too.
Here’s a link I found with info and some pics from Eastern Kentucky.

I am so heartbroken over all the devastation. It is so hard to comprehend how one minute your life is normal and the next minute your life is either changed forever or completely gone. It really makes you appreciate the little things in life.
Rob Marciano of CNN is broadcasting from West Liberty.
Chris, I was so excited on Wednesday to hear about you coming back home. I just wish the sadness of TG’s retirement and joy surrounding your return wasn’t in the middle of one of the worst natural disasters this area has ever seen. It’s a permanent bookmark in our minds of when TG left and you returned. In spite of the gloom we are are dealing with, I really am so happy that you are back.
Is the snow on the radar this morning the same snow we will see accumulating, or is it going to develop in a different area? Is is verga or are you cky and eky folks seeing snow flurries?
snow off and on in Louisville area…the system that will affect us overnight is in Minnesota right now…dropping south towards Kentucky
Thanks! See that now! Not that I want any snow…….but it looks like BG will miss it all!
Flurries in Frankfort
So no it isn’t all verga (sp) 🙂
And I guess we have to remember………..the models have NOT predicted snow all winter……..no reason why they would become accurate all of a sudden now 🙂
Been telling people that I work with that we would somehow pay for the warm winter we have experienced. They all thought I was nuts. I told them that we would have more bugs, and that farmers would be dealing with more pests on crops. I also mentioned a stormy spring, and a wet, cool summer as possibilities.
You know it is a rarity when Jim Cantore says that he has never seen a tornado outbreak followed by an accumulating snow….
Funny, we have wanted it all winter and it has dodged us for the most part. Now, when we don’t, it will probably snow, and be an overachiever. Either way, the people of KY will deal with it, as we always do.
Prayers and thoughts going out to all who are affected by the storms. Whether you be a victim, or a first responder, you are in my prayers.
Looking forward to seeing your thoughts on where the snow will fall, Chris. This is one time I wish the infamous “snow dome” would ward it off. Have a great Sunday, all.
Coffeelady, You always have the perfect thing to say now and through the years. I have said all along that this mild winter may backfire on us. In the past I’ve seen killing frost and snowstroms just as everything is in bloom. Terrible for our fruit trees leaving us with nothing in summer and fall! I don’t think winter has had it’s say just yet!
Moderate snow shower in Frankfort, Strange??
I’m at work in Versailles today, have a dusting on vehicles. Anybody in Lexington reporting any snow?
Hey James! I’m not at work today, but I live in Versaills too! I was surprised to see it as well! I thought we weren’t suppose to see this wintery stuff until the wee morning hours.
why it SAD TG leaving??? fact is he got new job lined up with better hours i guess, but he not leaving to be a STAY AT HOME DAD for ever. he got to him anyways a better gig.
Rolo, I am so glad to hear that TG has something else lined up – and that it is a better situation for him!! Frankly, I have been worried that his leaving might have been prompted by something more serious, such as a health worry for him or his family, so thank you for sharing this good news that he is leaving for “greener pastures!” On days like this, when we are all numb over the heartache caused by the storms, it is a blessing to hear good things! 🙂 Would it be possible for you to share any details you know as to what he may be doing – or is that private? If so, I understand. Thanks so much!
Forcing/lift does look impressive with this clipper tonight. Have to agree with Chris the location is hard to pin down. Though say southern suburbs of Lexington toward Jackson and southeast KY of the heavier totals.
Snowing hard in Bourbon County. I drove to Winchester and there was about 50 yards of major tree damage about five miles from town. It may have been one tiny little burst of wind or a tornado that brushed just that one spot.
Rolo, as for TG and speaking only for myselt, it’s sad that he’s leaving because he is so good, so calm, so professional and he’s so beloved by his co-workers and the viewers. Of course it goes without saying that Chris is the most awesome replacement, and truly the ONLY guy for the job. Still, I hate losing TG because he was fantastic.
I hope he loves his new job but he’s still so young. I bet he gets an itch to be back in the saddle. All eyes were on him on Friday. He was amazing!!
Light snow in Richmond right now.
I believe in the early spring snow storm! I’m talking April. Whose with me? Come on… We all know we get snow when we don’t want it. And I already don’t want this snow tonighy. Now that doesn’t mean I won’t be excited when it happens never the less;).
Dear Mother Nature…my family and I were blessed on Wednesday and Friday. We were spared the widespread destruction. Please give our friends, loved ones and fellow Kentuckians to the east and south a break. If snow must fall, then the best path would keep the clipper from turning the corner, causing it to follow 65 south into Bowling Green’s warmer temps. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
KP, has anyone heard what his new job is, or is he going to be a full time stay at home dad?
I am talking about TG
I would like to thank Chris for his live coverage I am sure it helped saved lives.I also want to thank God for protecting my son. He was in Johnson County working at Wal mart when it hit the windows or doors were broke out now I hear it was confirmed a Tornado was in Johnson County where he was. When something like that hits you that close to home it puts your life in perspective Thanks everyone on this blog for telling the weather conditions as it moved when I saw on radar it was going to where he was I cant explained how that felt so thanks Chris everyone on the blog and God!!!!!!
Thoughts and prayers with the tornado ravaged communities.
Snow showers have been falling along Herrington Lake for the past few hours…….no accum of course that action is not until tonight.
So, is this precip going to make a drastic turn to the right? Because the looks of it right now, it is making a beeline for Evansville on southeast.
bgbecky…Yes, steering currents look to me to shift more easterly as it approaches………………..
Also here is a streaming cam out of Winchester thats pretty good for weather watching. http://74.87.197.132/view/index.shtml
Is tonight’s snow going to be a wet and heavy snow or more of a fluffed up snow?
Thinking about all the storm victims. I couldn’t even start to imagine what it’s like for you right now.
Snow flurries sunshine and 42 degrees his is plum weird. Im here in Waynesburg Ky.

The 10am run of SREF looks pretty robust for snowfall tonight.
Advisories across southwestern VA just upgraded to Winter Storm Warnings for the mountains. 1-3 lower, 3-6 above 2500 ft, locally higher above 3500 ft.
