Good Sunday afternoon. Snow showers have been common across the bluegrass state this afternoon and have even put down a short-lived covering. The main snow action arrives later this evening into tonight and this will leave behind a swath of accumulating snows from northwest to southeast.
A band of moderate to heavy snow will setup tonight and the exact question is still in question as it depends on the track of our clipper. Here is a first call for snowfall…
Let me start out by saying I’m being a little conservative with that call. I do expect a few spots of 4″ of snow within the 1″-3″ corridor and the possibility of a little more than 4″ in the far southeast. The lines you see above are not set in stone and may expand a little in any direction.
The snow will create slick roads overnight and likely to lead to a snow day for some on Monday. This will be a wet snowfall that will create some picturesque scenes.
Enjoy it… temps will soar by Tuesday with a mild rest of the week ahead of us.
Off to Lexington I go to begin my new job as Chief Meteorologist at WKYT-TV in Lexington on Monday. Wish me luck. 🙂
I will have another update at some point later tonight. Have a great evening and take care.
Hooray! At least BG is in the 1″ or less area……..lol! Good luck Chris!!! Thanks for the update!
Advisories across southwestern VA just upgraded to Winter Storm Warnings for the mountains. 1-3 lower, 3-6 above 2500 ft, locally higher a
…..locally higher above 3500 ft.
Snow dome look to that map for us in CKY, If that hold’s true some parts of seast ky will have had 12in of snow in the past 3 weeks. Frankfort stands at 2.4in for the winter.
It looks like its turning, lets hope Frankfort can get in the 3 or 4″ range for once.
Great to have you back and it looks like you bring SNOW!
Glad to see ya back!
It will be great to have you back Chris!
So glad to see you back… Don’t write too much anymore – but I do read faithfully and now will watch faithfully!!
The radar will tell the story where the highest accumulation will fall. I think that the Lou,Lex,&F.Fort area will do good tonight. ( way overdue)
Hope you are correct, Frankfort under a winter weather advisory & Chris says 1in. or less, That is not WWA criteria. NWS & Chris not on the same page at the moment for this area?
Yes, 1in is WWA criteria and our forecasts are in pretty decent agreement.
I think Chris is going with the Nam model which is more aggressive with the snowfall totals in your area.
And I read reviews on this blog that write “the Nam is more accurate when a system is coming from the north”.
True dat, so let us see if convention good true
Should have been “holds true”. Darn Swype.
The NAM was the clear champ with northwest flow systems in the past couple of years, but this year it doesn’t have such a great record. Not sure why exactly. But any way you cut it, going from 70s and twisters to snow in a single weekend is crazy.
We school teachers just love the prediction for a snow day! I am a faithful follower and look forward to you joining WKYT. Best wishes to ya! 🙂
Good Luck Chris! Glad to have you back in Lexington!! Bring on the snow!! We in Central KY are long overdue!!
Again here is a link to a streaming cam in Winchester. It is interactive and offers a good sky view for storm watching in that area.
The owner says feel free to link to it and hopes it will be put to good use.
http://74.87.197.132/view/index.shtml
I have found it quite useful.
Yes I hope we can implant alot more webcams around the area. These would be great to use for live storm spotting. I hope WKYT uses alot of them and installs more. I know in other states they use them often for storm tracking. Places like the Arena here in Corbin would be a great spot for a camera and maybe the hospital at London. Just to name a few. Also I would wish the colleges would implant Casa radars in every state to help predict lower level rotation.
well the prcip and track a bulleye for london east and ne, but will it get cold renbough
Louisville officially has 3.5″ of snow this winter. Definitely a shot at doubling that total with tonights clipper.
Clippers can be fickle, but not all of them. I think March clippers in general are more robust. Hopefully, this will surprise those of us who haven’t had a chance to build many snow castles this winter.
Stay safe though and drive defensively…
Welcome back to WKYT,Chris. Have a safe trip and good luck tomorrow, although I know you don’t need any luck!!!!You are the best weatherman in the world!!!! 🙂
Congradulations! Enjoy your new job. I will follow you wherever you go. You are the best and you deserve the best. You are very faitful to your blog. I wish you the very best! Movin on up! Thanks for the live cast the other night!
If this was january & the temps where in the 20’s I would say then a 1in or less is WWA worthy, but march after 70 degree weather a inch or less will not stick to the roads at marginal temps. So I stick to my guns!!
CKY can have our share of snow seeing as how people are trying to put their lives back together here and would rather do it without another headache. Pray for EKY!
I know all of East Ky will rebound after this severe event, I have family their to & mother nature has met her match, Stay strong folks.
We are so excited to have Chris back in Lexington and will now be a faithful viewer of WKYT!
Congratulations Chris! So glad to see you back on WKYT. I have been a faithful follower of kyweathercenter since the first post and will continue to watch your forecasts. You, unlike so many other meteorologists are not afraid to tell us what “might” happen instead of being “middle of the road” until the last second. I sure would rather know ahead of time what might be coming down the pike so I can be prepared for it. Keep up the good work!
* LOCATIONS…EXTREME SOUTHEAST INDIANA AND PORTIONS OF NORTHERN
KENTUCKY SOUTH OF METRO CINCINNATI.
* HAZARD TYPES…SNOW.
* ACCUMULATIONS…SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 1 TO 2 INCHES. THE HIGHER
SNOWFALL TOTALS OVER AN INCH WILL OCCUR IN SOUTHERN OWEN AND
SOUTHERN GRANT COUNTIES.
Franfort is south of this area?
Chris is a little further south with this?
Where did that info. come from?
NWS in northern KY
I see it now. Thanks for the clarification.
Looks like the precip sheild may come far enough north to get Frankfort into the heavier snow band.
Chris…….you had a most difficult job Friday & I have to tell you that your weather blog was just great. The weather maps & radar were clear & easy to follow. We could track the path of the storms & see the dangerous storms on their way. Thanks so much for your hard work & efforts to keep us informed. We watch WSAZ but we will follow you through KY weather.com. Keep up the good work! MT

Nice swath of precip looks to be a certain from northcentral ky tracking se into ky.
Jackson may update the southeastern counties to a warning later tonight, per their latest discussion.
back home finally from a long weekend getaway…and my forecast goes alittle something like this:
he Rest Of Tonight…Rain and snow showers likely in the evening then snow showers. The snow may be heavy at times after midnight. Snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches. Locally up to 4 inches possible. Lows 25 to 30. West winds at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 100 percent
Tornadoes, Humidity, 80*, flashflooding, winterweather advisories, and heavy snow!!! all within 5 days!!!..my,my,my!!!
Go to be Puxtehawney Phil. A ceramics major could have belched that forecast!
Congratulations on your new position! Love the blog!
Cannot WAIT to see Chris on WKYT tomorrow. He’s a rock star!!!!!
Band looks to set-up slightly further north now based on RUC and radar.
Thanks for the update, CB. I live across the hill from Middle Fork at Jenny’s Creek in Johnson County and I could hear the tornado as it went by. I will never, ever forget that sound. I am on the same power source so I won’t have power till next Friday…I’m just thankful I still have a house. Praying for all those people who lost loved ones and their homes.
Chris, where is your last call map? At this point it is radar nowcasting, Love ya man, but I got to keep you on your toes 🙂
Thanks for all your hard work during the bad weather and tornadoes. It is great to have you back. God bless you and your family Chris!
Guys please pray for everyone here in Morgan co this is the worst thing I have ever saw in life I just can’t tell you how bad this is everything is gone here Evan out in the county not just west liberty I just don’t know how we will ever get Evan close to normal again…..
i disagree MITCH by radar look to be right on target tad south. 1 64 to hal rodegers east and SE get precip.
First, congratulations on your new job @ WKYT! I just wanted to thank you for this blog, it’s the most accurate weather that I’ve found. You do a great job, keep up the good work.
Chris Bailey, how are you seeing the rest of our winter and spring as far as these storms we had this past friday March 2nd? Are we going to see more like that? Alot of people are asking if we are in store for more of the same storms (tornado activity) and such. Thanks.
Helped with the East Bernstadt clean up today, such a tradegy for those lives that have been lost and homes destroyed of those who survived. It really makes you step back and think about all the blessings I have in my life and to be grateful for them. God Bless Them.
YEAH!! I will be changing TV stations now!! Glad you are coming back this way!!
Snowing lightly in w. Lex. Radar say it’s raining, but it’s coming down as snow.
Snowing on UK Campus
Chris we miss u at Wsaz but I am glad we can follow u here.
Its snowing pretty good in Shelbyville. Not sticking yet though.
Anything live in Elizabethtown? Let me know if it starts snowing there…
Rain snow mix in Frankfort? temp 34
rain in Berea
Kentucky you are extremely lucky to have Chris, he will be extremely missed in wv. Oh and Chris stop being so humble, I don’t think you need any luck tomorrow. Wish u the best on your new job.
Decent snowfall in Louisville now. Too bad the temp is so high. Melting on contact with anything.
Ok, heavy snowfall now. Starting to stick to cars.
Big snow. flakes in Frankfort, Temp 33.
Also Chris please use alot of the radar products on air.
Newest 0z NAM has Louisville & Lexington right in the bullseye…Mitch is correct. I live north of I64 about 10 miles in Louisville & we have .5″ already, coming down hard!
Can you post the OZ NAM please??
http://wxcaster.com/gis-snow-overlays.php3?STATIONID=LVX
Thanks!!!!
Now 1″ of snow has fallen
I’d say 2 to 3 inches maybe 4 tops. Keep up the reporting from Louisville a line between us is where the band is.
Up to 1.5″ now Mitch
Snowing hard in Frankfort at the moment!
Just stepped outside — heavy wet snow in Richmond…
1/2 inch where i am in versailles.
Mitch, It’s snowing so heavy now that my room illuminated from the snow! It woke me up!! LOL!
MikeM are you up seeing this?
Feeling like the heaviest band(s) will set up pretty much where they did back in January…S. Jefferson/Bullitt/Nelson Counties, just E. of the I-65 corridor….just changed over to heavy wet snow here in Bardstown.
And just when I didn’t think the flakes could get any bigger… Man these are GINORMOUS! (Louisville)
Beautiful snow in Lawrenceburg, KY. Certainly the hardest and already deepest snow of the winter. I would estimate about 1 inch has fallen. Temp is holding at 33 degrees, but roads are covered.
2 inches in new washington indiana.. northeast clark county
Snowing pretty hard in Metro Lou. More so to the south along the Gene Snyder. Lex to EKY will see pretty good snow.
On a side note, from a huge snow lover, it is hard to get excited about this snow with all the Tornado damage that has happen in IN/KY. May God Bless everyone that may have had loved ones or friends in the direct path of these storms.
I guess Mother Nature is just showing all of us that she does have a kind side to her. Biggest flakes I have seen in years…
While we snow lovers are lovin’ it…it couldn’t have come at a worse time for those trying to begin the “clean-up” process…
Where are you ,bjenks? Just wondered…..we had some heavy wet flakes a bit ago in Bardstown, but nothing much now….
Germantown/Audubon Park area. Best friend has parents that live two miles north of Henryville just on the other side of the Clark State Forrest. Worst damage I have witnessed since the 74 tornado’s. I can’t agree more with this coming a the worst time. To bad it can’t be 70 and sunny for a month straight.
Thanks..i only had hail damage at my house but 1 mile up the road everything is gone.. also i was lucky on a rental property in henryville except the busted windows but 200 feet down the road my neighbors lost everything.. please people i dont like to bring God into the blog.. but pray for the people that wasnt as lucky as i was.. it made this grown man cry
U or L Fan…Glad to here you escaped with little damage. I am sure you will be busy helping out your neighbors. My best friends Mom and Dad live on Brownstown Road and I am guessing it missed them by a couple miles. They are just west of I65.
Right in the middle of the 1-3″ =happy kiddos headed off to bed.
The big GOOSE EGG=kiddos that I might be tempted to let call Chris for an explanation!! (Very disappointed)
