Good Wednesday to one and all. We have one heck of a nice weather day taking shape for the bluegrass state. It’s one that will make you REALLY crave spring and the awesome weather it can bring. That’s the good news part of the blog. The bad news is we have showers and thunderstorms to deal with by Thursday.
Today’s weather will speak for itself. Temps will be near 70 under partly sunny skies. Winds will crank up and gusts of 25mph will be possible.
An upper level low will continue to slowly spin our way by Thursday and will pump up some gulf moisture. This juice will run into a cold front dropping in from the northwest Thursday night and Friday. This front is showing a little more pushing power and may shunt the initial surge of heavy rain across southern Kentucky into the Tennessee Valley.
The NAM totals through Friday continue to look impressive for many…
The GFS shows the front clearing the area just a bit quicker and pushing the axis of heavy rain just to our south…
I don’t think anyone will complain if flooding rains stay to our south and southwest. Let’s hope that is indeed the case because this is going to be a big rain maker for a lot of people.
Cooler air moves in for Friday and Saturday…but it should be drier. Highs Friday will be around 50 before hitting the mid 50s on Saturday as clouds increase.
The upper low in the plains will drift back to the east and we will see the return of showers and thunderstorms to end the weekend. That action should then continue into early next week and will provide another shot at some heavy rains.
Check out the totals for the next week from the GFS…
That’s a TON of rain falling just to our southwest over the next 5 days. Let’s hope it doesn’t shift a little farther to the northeast. That’s the last thing we need here in Kentucky.
Have a great Wednesday and take care.

Sounds like our state congress is trying to pull a slick one over us with not much media coverage:
Kentucky bill may help hang up landline phone service
http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20120228/NEWS01/302280067/Kentucky-bill-may-help-hang-up-landline-phone-service?odyssey=tab|mostpopular|text|FRONTPAGE
This may really hurt folks if a natural disaster comes and they have no landline service because most likely cell towers will be overcrowded.
Wow, that is unreal. I have lived in KY for 33 years, and I wish that I had a $5 bill for every time I’ve seen a storm knock out electricity…but the phone on the wall in the house still worked. Newsflash.. cell phones use electricity. When the battery goes dead, you’re boned. Working toward a world free of landline phone service is a disasterous idea, in my opinion.
Thats exactly right. I know several people who cant afford one.
that is right that is why I listed it here so folks can call and complain to their state congress rep. about this. After what has happened we sure don’t need this bill to become law. hopefully it will be vetoed
Thank you Chris.

Let the Texans have the rain. My mom keeps whining that it will take 24″ of rain to get back to normal. I keep telling her that it can happen a lot faster than she thinks. Lexington went from drought in 2010 to wettest year ever in 2011. She thinks I’m nuts.
Todd Borek scared the daylights out of me this morning when he said winds would be gusting at 61 mph this afternoon. I quickly turned to look at the TV and he was pointing to today’s high temp of 61 degrees. Since it was the wee hours of the morning, I shall not hold that against him. I’m sure all mets around here are every so slightly exhausted!
Missing you so much at wsaz. My family member was at work Friday when tornadoes were about to hit the area so she naturally headed for your Blog and you weren’t there — she had no TV. Hope you will cover Huntington area on kyweather. We need your help!
Tornado siren just went off in downtown Lexington. Certain to be a test, but unsettling nonetheless.
Chris I saw you on TV last night for the first time since returning to WKYT. Really glad that you are back. You are going to trample a certain other guy’s ratings for sure.
Has anyone heard from Marsha? She lives in Morgan County. I hope she is all right.
Rhonda I am fine just heartbroken I seen my town today nothing left….
Just pray that we don’t get no more bad storms….
Glad that you are ok.
Marsha, I’m so glad you’re safe. I am heartbroken, too. I loved West Liberty, such a quaint little town. All those places I am so familiar with, it’s devastating to see the destruction. Thanks for letting me know you’re okay, take care.
