Good Thursday to one and all. Today is going to be an unsettling weather day for a lot of people across Kentucky. This will be the first round of showers and storms to move through since Friday’s deadly tornado outbreak. The good news is that today’s storms are not expected to be severe. Heavy rains and some gusty winds will be likely, but these should be the typical, run of the mill storms.
The action today is ahead of a strong cold front moving through here later today. Temps will spike into the 60s before the rain moves in and will then drop fairly quickly as the drops fall. Rainfall totals may hit an inch for some areas… especially across our southern counties.
Winds will be gusty as the front blows through here. Much cooler and drier air moves in later tonight into Friday and this dry weather should last most of the weekend. Temps will warm to around 50 on Friday and will hit the mid and upper 50s Saturday and near 60 Sunday.
The slow-moving upper low in the plains will make another run at us by later Sunday into early next week. Showers and thunderstorms will move back in during this time and we will have to watch for another round of heavy rain and maybe a strong storm or two.
The setup over the next 5 days puts our region right on the cusp of some serious rainfall. Look at the numbers from the GFS…
This system should finally clear the region by the middle of next week. Temps should remain above normal during the rainy period and then REALLY take off for the rest of next week. I am looking at this pattern over the next few weeks and wondering if we can get flirt with some record highs.
The GFS Ensembles certainly look very warm…
Have a great Thursday and take care.
Thanks Jeff And Rhonda I’m am ok but my heart is so sadden by the devastation here in west liberty it’s like something you would see out of the movie twister I just hope we never have to go thought something like this again all our blog family from west liberty needs to let us know that you are ok…..
Guys if anyone can help these people they need it because they have nothing so many house just destroy…..
Yes, the good news is that even though we’re looking at lots of rain.. there is nothing in the modeling right now that would suggest another tornado outbreak here in the next couple of weeks. Looks like the short term pattern is going to calm down at least for a little while.
Wxman u know a lot about storms I’m am hearing that tornado alley is now right thought where this tornado hit Friday my nervous are shot please tell me this is not true……
Hope you don’t mind my comments, Marsha. Wishing your area speedy healing and recovery.
120 years of records suggest eastern KY is normally not tornadoes prone. While this link is WV, it can apply to eastern KY:
http://stormhighway.com/wvstorms.shtml
WV tornadoes are uncommon. However, in 1944, WV had by far its worst outbreak – over 100 fatalities, nothing nearly like it in WV before 1944 nor since. While April 1974 was bad in WV, even it pales to 44.
It may be the March 2 storms had rare ingredients to overcome the odds. For one thing, these storms tracked west to east (not the more typical track from southwest) thus avoiding higher elevations that hinder tornado genesis. The 1944 WV tornadoes moved from the northwest – very rare – but had low, flat terrain to develop over as a result. Anyway, eastern KY likely won’t become a tornado alley, although the pro mets can speak better about this.
