Good Monday to one and all. Our weekend weather was fantastic with temps soaring to near 70 on Sunday. Get used to it because the upcoming pattern looks more like May than March. Yep… it’s gonna get awfully warm this week and beyond.
The warm period is kicking off with some showers and thunderstorms out there today. The action becomes more scattered as we head into the afternoon hours as some sunshine breaks through. This may add enough instability to pop a few strong storms and that’s something we will be watching for.
Highs today will hit the mid and upper 60s with some low 70s in the west.
The 70s look to really get going over the next few days…
Temps this week into the coming weekend may make a run at 80 degrees on any given day. If that is the case… record highs may be threatened in many areas.
This setup looks to be locked into place for a while and that means a huge ridge of high pressure in the east with a trough in the west. Here are the 500mb height anomalies from the European for days 6-10…
Who needs spring… let’s bring on summer! 🙂
With the warm pattern will come an almost daily threat for scattered showers and thunderstorms. It won’t rain everyday where you live, but each day will likely have some stuff showing up on radar. The GFS continues to show how the activity impacts a lot of the region over the next week…
That’s all you crazy weather weenies get for now. I will keep an eye on the chance for a strong storm or two this afternoon and update as needed. Have a great Monday and take care.
Sounds like a great forcast. Im so happy i have a smart phone and can just check the blog from bed lol bad i know haha
Thanks CB! We love you CATS!
I don’t mind Vandy taking the title. They haven’t had one in 61 years. I’d rather see them take it than Florida or Tennessee or LSU any day of the week. And.. now the CATS got their loss out of the way. So here’s hoping they get angry and turn up the heat for the NCAA.
Weatherwise.. wow. That’s all you can say. Looks like late May instead of early March, and as is always the case, when you get unusual warmth you usually end up paying for it. Will be watching closely for t-storms this week.
Loving this weather!!….interesting though, that the pattern this month kind of parallels the March of 1976…and we older folks knows what happened that following winter of 1977!!!…:)
We are not going to have any severe weather, are we? Please say we aren’t going to have any tornadoes.
Perhaps an isolated strong storm or two. Very low chance of tornadoes, KY is not even in the 2% area on SPC maps:

Thanks, Mark. I appreciate your reply! I feel better knowing that.
Unfortunately, we’re far from out of the woods regarding risk to property and life. April, March and May (in that order) are the three most dangerous months for tornadoes in our immediate area.
So at the risk of sounding over-repetitive, we all need to protect ourselves by getting advance warning alarms like wx radios (so-called SAME technology is a plus), knowing where your best shelter is, to abandon mobile homes, etc. As the saying goes, property can be replaced, but we can’t get a new you.
This is something that we really don’t need to hear right now but we know you are right I just don’t know how we will deal with these storms it’s just so sad…..
Rhonda I hope not I’m just not ready for that I’m still having a hard time dealing with our lose…..
Hey Chris! Sorry you’ve left WSAZ, but really glad you’re still blogging! You are the best! Pike County Ky. loves you!! I hope you’ll be around to keep us warned as we go into spring and summer!
The warmth is just crazy!!!
Lets hope UK History repeats itself from 1996!!!!!!!
We are pretty much at the anniversary of the Blizzard of 93. One can look up previous posts of some of my memories, I was a nine year old east TN kid, unforgettable experience. Any other interesting stories?
Here’s tv coverage of Birmingham which includes a younger James Spann.

it was a memorable storm to say the least, I remember it well !! and the blizzard conditions with thunder/lightning here in east ky!! at the heart of the storm, the daylight hours almost seemed to be late evening even with the high march sun….probably a storm most of us will never witness in our lifetime again…but we can always hope…lol…
I lived in East Bernstadt at the time…I went into labor on the 14th. The snow was so deep that I couldn’t get out my front door because of the drifting. I had 2 windows in the front of the house and the snow was up to the middle of the window. Hwy 25 was closed and I-75 was closed so I had my very own National Guard escort to Corbin Hospital (where I worked). My baby girl was born on 3/15/93 at 1:52am. It took us 1 1/2 hours to get to Corbin Hospital from downtown London.
I wish I had been alive then! I can give you a lot of stats about the superstorm if you want them. hahaha
I was living in Louisville, working outside at that. Hardly any snow, but bitter wind and cold. Strange that places like Atlanta and Birmingham got it much worse than Louisville. The SEC mens tournament was in Lexington that year, around five inches during the tournament.
The following January (1994) in Louisville, my outside job had me in 15 inches snow and 22 below zero (feet started to get numb despite layers of thermal socks). About a week later it was in the 60s.
Chris…love your commericals on WKYT! They are so you!
Thanks, Chris. Let’s hope the CATS got that out of their system! Now, we can go bring it home! And winning weather as well. But, we will pay for it at some point. Have a great Monday.
