Good Thursday to one and all. Thanks a bunch for all the weather reports from the latest round of severe storms to roll across the bluegrass state. We have a shot at a few more storms out there today and we will set you up to track those.
How about a few headlines to start things out…
– The best threat for some strong or severe storms today will be across the eastern half of the state. General shows and thunderstorms will be possible elsewhere.
– Leftover showers and storms may linger into Friday across the east.
– The much anticipated Memorial Day Weekend is just around the corner and the weather looks to be in good shape. There is a chance for a scattered storm… but much of the time will be dry. Temps will likely soar toward the 90 degree mark from Sunday through next Tuesday or Wednesday. This will also be a very humid period.
Back to the showers and storms of today…
Severe Weather Threat
Radars
I will have updates as needed so check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

Things getting a little worse in Pulaski County right now! Lightning is really bad to the south and west….winds really starting to pick up
Related News It seems most people are working today with one eye looking out the window and another looking at live radar on their computer while several lines of storms continue to pound Middle Tennessee. The following is a round-up of just some of the photo galleries, forecasts and other information about today’s storm:…

Winds started picking up in Corbin area at about 3:30. Some lightning, little rain. Looks as if it is losing strength/falling apart. All is pretty calm right now.
Wind must have been pretty bad last night it blew my ball goal straight backwards and is laying flat on the ground. The last time that happened we had 60-70 mpg wind gusts haven’t checked for other damage just yet
Not a drop of rain however we did get more wind that the poor ball goal could handle at my house
Yeah, pretty much a bust in E-Town.
Thanks Chris, for all the information you give us, without the hype or drama… I’m sure many more than just me appreciate that highly.
Andy,
Are you sure it wasn’t Demarcus Cousins playing hoops there last night? lol
Just a follow up on some discussion in the live chat on the weather radios…
The Midland radio that is so popular and sold in grocery stores has had some reliability issues. I went through two, and a friend had one as well. All three at some point quit receiving a signal. This has been an ongoing issue that at least the Louisville office is aware of because I had contact with them when I was having trouble.
Someone asked me which one I use now. I have the FirstAlert WX-150. I am very happy with it, and so is the friend that previously had the Midland.
Some people were saying they had good luck with NOAA radios. That is not a brand- it is a type of radio, meaning it receives the broadcast/alerts from NOAA.
Here is a link with some additional information and models:

E-TownKY – You realize you can get on the blog without reading comments, and see only what Chris has to say about the weather right? What do you expect on an unmoderated blog full of people who love weather? The drama will continue no matter how much you whine about it. Seeing how you acted yesterday was nothing short of pathetic. Stay off the comments if you don’t like anything you see.
Lovely day in E-Town! Big beautiful clouds rolling by and sunshine in between.
Enjoy the sunshine the next few days everyone! 🙂
In all my years, the Midland WR-100 that I paid $30 for has been the best weather radio I’ve ever owned. Even the $130+ radios have been extremely poor compared to this one. And don’t even get me started on the Radio Shack branded radios…total garbage.
It’s amazing how people start calling it “hype” if it doesn’t blow THEIR house down. Look at all the damage reports and the injury from a tree on a house and tell me that we “hyped” it up. The SPC outlooks were SPOT-ON yesterday…this storm died when it hit I-75 and that’s exactly what the SPC outlooks indicated it would do. But there was a ton of damage before it got here and people needed to know that it had the potential to be deadly.
Well said.
Keep doing what you do WXMAN. Just because a house didn’t blow away in E-TOWN, doesn’t mean the REST OF US don’t want to hear whats POSSIBLE. After all, weather does not care what we think or say, so its better to be prepared for worst-case and hope its not as bad as that.
I agree wholeheartedly. It’s always better to be overly-prepared than to be caught off guard and unprepared for the worst-case scenario. I appreciate your thoughts on the severe weather, too, Wxman.
I should be getting paid by Midland for all the ones I’ve sold for them! 🙂 I live and die by my Midland. The only trouble I had with mine was letting the batteries corrode in it! That can cause it to do some pretty weird things. Luckily it still works. However, I know own TWO. One for my camper and one for the house.
UnModerated?
How well do those manual crank wx radios work…the ones that don’t require batteries or power cord. I know it might get cumbersome cranking all the time but still, chances are you know it will work in all situations
Weather Radios: our Reecom has been working like a charm (and woke us up at 4:30 am when the storm lines finally made it to our part of KY). For those whose radios aren’t working, check to make sure that the county codes are still programmed in – a power outage might have deleted them. And Chris, thanks for the live blog last night. It was more interesting than what I could hear from the television; plus the parts I missed once I decided it was bedtime made for interesting reading this morning! (Especially the baseball updates!)
Interesting. All I can tell you is that both of mine worked fine for a while. Then I suddenly realized one day that it wasn’t receiving warnings. After I replaced it, it happened again. I spoke with LMK and they told me that they had issues with them, but they thought they were resolved. My friend had the same problem. Each of them worked for a year or less. Personally, I don’t think that is a very good track record, but maybe we are just unlucky.
Oh, and I will just add that my post is in response to a comment during the live blog by someone that said that she and her friend both had the WR-100 and it wasnt receiving alerts. For anyone in that situation, Id suggest contacting your NWS office for assistance and/or so that they are aware of it.
The WR-100 has been replaced now with the new WR-120B. Amazon.com has them and you can see that they have been redesigned slightly. It is understood that these new radios have a new set of firmware that hopefully resolve the issues that the WR-100 had.
Thanks MJ! Good to know.
Just had a nasty storm roll thru east Somerset just after 5pm. Nickel to quarter size hail, very heavy downpour and moderate winds. Anybody else had enough hail this year?
I think the one thing we ALL can agree on is how thankful we are to Chris for this website. Also, how much we appreciate him staying up into the night with live chat to keep us all informed of the weather situation. It is wonderful to be able to depend on his dedication to the weather. This is the only site I depend on for the most reliable weather reports. I do not think anyone was doing hype on the weather last night. I for one, want to be informed and appreciate the comments of others who let us know what is going on in their areas.
I agree and see that the reason Chris didn’t blow things out of proportion was because it wasn’t needed. He let us know that this had the potential to be a very serious situation but didn’t over-hype the way some did…..some had me thinking the apocalypse was upon us lol. Again, I don’t mean to be snarky but I call it like I see it and it was pretty much an overkill!
Ya, have had quite enough. After the hail in 2007 that cost us a roof and some siding, I dislike hail very much.
Pretty Sure 😉
“
It is a good thing that the timing of the line will be that late. As for comparisons, the strength of the mid level jet rotating around this system is much weaker than with the super outbreak. Just looked back at SPC’s archives, and they mention a 100-kt jet. We’re looking more at 70-kt’s today. Still, expect dynamics of the system to be strong enough to maintain the threat for at least damaging winds and probably hail as well into Lexington.”
This was the reply I got when asking about a comparison to the outbreak from last month down south on Facebook. Now being as this response came from the LMK office and yet Language was still used to indicate a “Major Outbreak” so yes by heck I feel that I have plenty of indication to say that this event was Hyped!!! Dont be pissy on the rest of us if you can’t handle being called out on especially if your pay is possible by our tax funds!!!!!
