Good Wednesday, my friends. We have made it to the middle of the work week and we’re seeing a wide array of weather across the state today. Warmer and brighter days are ahead of us to close out the week. It’s the weekend and early next week time period that continues to get my attention.
Showers will be skirting across parts eastern and southeastern Kentucky today as low pressure works from the south into the Carolinas. A few of these showers may even be into central parts of the state very early this morning. This means a big temp swing from west to east. Readings will range from low 70s west to upper 50s to near 60 in the rainy areas of the southeast.
Warmer air surges in for Thursday and Friday as everyone sees thermometers heading into the mid and upper 70s. Gusty southwesterly winds will accompany a partly to mostly sunny sky.
This is where things begin to get a little crazy. We will see a huge dip in the jet stream across the eastern part of the country. This will allow for a sizeable storm to develop across the south that will then slowly work into the Mid Atlantic states by Sunday and Monday. We should also see a nice little cutoff low in the upper levels of the atmosphere spinning very close by.
Models always have a tough time pegging where these types of storms and this one is no different. One thing is for sure… there is a winter look the models are showing…
GFS
European Ensembles
The Canadian Model
That run of the Canadian takes it to the extreme and would result in a lot more than cold and rain for the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes.
Let’s hope this thing turns out weaker and farther east without much impact on Kentucky. Hope being the key word in that statement. 😉
Have a great Wednesday and take care.
Seriously, now?! Why not January?! Lets hear about the chances….I cannot imagine snow at this point in the year but stranger things have happened.
Just looked up Nashville TN:
Latest measurable snowfall: 1.5 inches (April 25 1966). Even a few trace snows in May.
With all the leaves out, hope there wouldn’t be wide-scale tree damage/power failures, but if the Canadian model wins out, well….
I said months ago that I was dreaming of a White Derby! Although it is not Derby Day it is sure close. I beleive, three years ago around this time it was in the mid 20’s for a couple days.
Actually, I’m kinda hoping for a late season snowstorm. It would be awesome to get a snow day in late april lol
00z euro acutally has a thermal profile indicating snow for Monday and Tuesday for a large chunk of eastern KY. The euro had the march snow that caught many off guard more than a week out though the GFS and CMC are farther east with the track of this system at this point which would mean cold rain showers.
Thanks, Chris. yes, yes, yes, let us hope this thing does indeed move further East….but, it likely won’t, so just get prepared for another cold weekend in store. Yesterday, though, you DID say that warmer temps by the end of next week? Hope that means a dry weekend as well. TLarkin, I have seen late April snows…you may NOT want one as badly as you think! 😉 Have a GREAT day, everyone.
I personally don’t think this weekend is going to be a total washout. I think Saturday is our best shot at rain, and it won’t be a lot of rain at that. Overall, not a horrible weekend. Temps in the 60 range also. I’ll take it.
5 day QPF…talk about a doughnut hole http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/p120i12.gif
Shame, we really need the rain.
