Good Thursday everyone and welcome to a very nice weather day across Kentucky. We have sunshine and temps in the 60s on the menu for today. The problem is our nice weather will be one and done as the threat for some scattered showers and storms moves back in for Friday and into the weekend.
Even on a nice day like this one… it can’t be all good as many areas will begin the day with frost and temps in the 30s. This late season frost will likely give green thumbs some problems this morning. Track the morning lows here…
Skies will be mainly sunny today as readings warm into the mid and high 60s for many areas. Some low 70s will be possible out west.
Clouds will quickly increase this evening into tonight as a fast moving system dives in from the northwest. This should bring a scattered shower or thunderstorm with it into Kentucky Oaks Day. More clouds and the threat for rain may bring our Friday temps down from today’s highs.
The BIG weekend ahead has a lot riding on it because of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and Mother’s Day Sunday. As one would expect… we have another weather maker that will slide our way later Saturday into early Sunday. This will have more juice than the Friday system and thus give us a better chance for showers and thunderstorms.
Here is how the GFS sees this playing out…
The timing on this may make for some anxious moments for Derby goers as some action may be firing up by late Saturday afternoon into the evening hours. This looks to move through fairly quickly giving us an improving Mother’s Day.
Temps this weekend should be in the low and mid 70s for highs.
A blast of warm air will sure in for the first half of next week. While that is all good… we will have to watch for some scattered storms on the move. Temps should spike into the 80s for a few days. This warm wave will then get taken out by another chilly shot of air moving in by the end of next week. That is likely to spell severe weather from the plains into the Ohio Valley.
You can see this warm wave wipeout very well on the GFS Ensembles Temp Departure map…
Have a great Thursday and enjoy the one and done nice day. Take care.

Lexington tied the record Low for May 5th of 33 degrees. Last set in 1957.
Had frost on the rooftops in Lawrencburg but didn’t appear to be on the grass. Temp was 32.
33 degrees in Lexington this morning tied the record low from 1957 for May 5th. The record low for the month is 26! Yikes!! That would cause some major gardening problems–and it happened on May 10!
I had 38f on my thermometer at my house in Nicholasville. It is odd that it didn’t record the same as the airport and was much warmer. It normally is right on or within range of the airports reading.
Boy it got REALLY cold in Somerset last night. Just now warmed to 7 degrees according to NWS….lol

The only time my temp is exactly the same as the airport is on a heavy overcast day………Otherwise my temp is about 3 to 4 degrees warmer.
I do not see much rain around derby on Saturday. Check out my latest blog entry if your interested.
I didn’t like the ice on the windshield this morning. It’s May, not February. I’m over it.
