Good Wednesday everyone. We are about to enter a stretch of weather that may rival some of the all time hottest May temps across parts of Kentucky. A rare May heat wave is about to engulf much of the central and eastern half of the country. Record highs will likely be set in many states during the process and all of this happens during our Memorial Day Weekend.
Our short-term weather isn’t so bad. We will see a few scattered showers and thunderstorms hanging around today across the eastern half of the state. This will help keep temps in the 70s east with sunshine boosting readings back into the 80s across the west. Here’s your regional radar…
Temps begin to take off on Thursday with highs well into the 80s under mainly sunny skies. Friday’s readings will be near 90 for most areas and that’s a sign of things to come. Low and mid 90s should be common across the state From Saturday through Memorial Day. Humidity levels will be on the increase and this will make it feel even warmer as we talk about a heat index in the upper 90s.
The GFS Ensembles show just how many areas will be seeing well above normal temps during this heat wave…
The Ensembles do give us a little bit of hope in the extended forecast as they have a cooler look to start June…
Let’s hope that’s the case. Regardless… it’s going to get hot this weekend and records may be falling across the state.
Have a great Wednesday and take care.
Record heat is not something I like no matter what time of year. 🙁
As long as there is hope that it won’t last too long, I will grin and bear it.
I had a meltdownn – literally – in Austin during the summer of 1993. I told my husband I could not survive one more year of that kind of heat. We moved in April 1994. The stories of the big freeze and ice storm of Jan. 1994 did not scare me at all. I gladly traded Austin heat for Kentucky ice! 🙂
KP, as a kid we went through central Texas on our way to and from the Rockies, and we did it with no car air conditioner. Oh man, let me tell you, that was an unreal kind of heat. And I am a Florida girl and I swear it was way hotter than we had ever felt in Florida!
Marie, I can only imagine how hot that must have felt to you. We did not have AC in our car when I was kid and I used to sit and wait for my mom to run errands. It’s a wonder I didn’t bake. I was always miserable. I never got used to it. It scarred me mentally because I truly hate heat!!
Frankfort area has missed the rain , looks like dry ground may help the heat build even more around this area of KY?
Thanks, Chris, for the update, and the forewarning. We got two really good rains yesterday. I would wager that it rained more than an inch yesterday evening around 7, and around a half inch or better yesterday afternoon. This morning, we were in that part of the state under a dense fog advisory, so we still have not had full sun yet. I expect that when we do, it will ikely get warm in a hurry!
In the meantime, I am still enjoying the fact that we are finally having warm weather. However, after this weekend, I am sure I will be ready for a few days of cooler temps! Have a great Wednesday, everyone!
The June-August period might be interesting. With neutral ENSO conditions, and the #1 warmest year on record currently going on, it’s going to be fun to watch how summer shapes up.
What does a neutral ENSO condition mean? Weren’t we all talking about how years with fading La Nina are cooler? Can’t we go back to that discussion? I don’t want to think about a long hot summer. 🙂
neutral ENSO basically means neither La Nina nor El Nino is present. Not sure what WxMan is getting at by saying this summer could be “interesting”, however. I am just hoping for “normal”.
