Good afternoon, folks. It’s a frigid day in the bluegrass state as we watch another light snow maker moving into parts of the state. From there, the stage is set for a lot more wintry weather for the week ahead and beyond. Buckle up, snow lovers.
A clipper looking system is going to spread a swath of light snow across western Kentucky into this evening. This may put down up to 1″ of snow in a few spots. As that happens, the flow comes down the length of Lake Michigan for a time and it may bring a few more snow showers and flurries into central and eastern Kentucky….
Frigid temps and gusty winds combine to knock the wind chill number to below zero at times through early Monday. I will get your tracking toys in a bit.
Temps rebound on Tuesday as a modified arctic front moves in from the west. Heavy rain develops just ahead of this front and works from west to east Tuesday night and Wednesday. Temps will drop roughly 20 degrees within an hour or so of the front passing. That may set us up for another flash freeze. Widespread precipitation is occurring behind this front and that’s in the form of freezing rain/sleet to snow. The potential is there for another round of significant winter weather Wednesday into Thursday, especially if a wave of low pressure develops along that slow-moving front.
An arctic front then sweeps in here behind that on Friday, possibly bringing a swath of arctic snows across the state. Another system will then follow that up Saturday and Sunday and has the potential to dig even more and tap some Gulf moisture and throw it into the arctic air in place.
New version of the GFS
GFS
Here’s the Euro with the Wednesday/Thursday potential…
The Euro also sees the potential behind that. The Euro snow map for the next 7-10 days shows our region as one of the target areas for the best snow potential…
The same can be basically said for the rest of the models, too.
New GFS
GFS Ensembles over the next 2 weeks…
With all the arctic shots lined up, obviously temps are going to be way, way colder than normal… Bitterly cold on several occasions.
I will hook you up with another post later this evening. Until then, let’s track the light snow maker moving into parts of the state from the northwest…
Have a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. By when I see modified front with heavy rain to snow that usually means we get the heavy rain and the snow goes elsewhere… I hope I’m wrong. Our daughter bet Vlevelandchas been busted wh about 13-14 inches sine yesterday morning and still snowing! Not lake effect!! Told her I’d trade! Have a good afternoon and stay warm!
Ha! Should have said Cleveland area! Oops!
Maybe my yard will actually get covered with snow at some point in the next 2 weeks
It’s entirely possible and would be a refreshing change for standing water and mud that has been the norm for well over a year now. lol
About 1/4 inch of snow Troy. Lousy but at least I got a few snow showers this morning.
Also, it appears we may FINALLY lock in the arctic air for a bit after Wednesday. I hope we squeeze a little bit of bonus snow Wednesday night as it appears like the moisture may lag behind the front a little. I hate cold chasing rain setups but fingers crossed….lol
Cool….better than expected! Only a dusting on the porch here (but honestly didn’t even expect that). lol
I hope the cold can chase and overtake this midweek storm Andy. We will have very low flash flood guidance this time around with precipitation predictions on models already showing up to 2 inches of liquid! Not good for us water logged, weary SE KY folks!
I came in under 2 inches yesterday, so not as ad as it could have been but still high Cumberland!
Glad you got a little bit of snow. Trying to hang on to our inch here. Sun has been out since noon. Local met’s and Charleston NWS aren’t on board with the snow chances for me this week. They have rain and 50 degrees for Wednesday then sunny and cold after that. I hope they are wrong.
So didn’t the model that The Weather Channel used for last nights storm get the snowfall forecast about right?
Well, if we extrapolate based on the snow from the previous two “storms”, the next three events should yield about 4.5″ of snow 🙂 😉
Though basically joking, the math is about right.
Well our (Richmond’s) 1 inch has mostly melted. Winter sunshine doing its job.
Three more systems, so about 4.5” more snow! 😉
Here’s hoping!
I’ve seen enough of those “2 week” snow fall maps!! Sorry but I have, it’s been showing snow this entire winter!
But right now I am enjoying the cold and little bit of snow
Still would like to understand how the last two systems were winter “storms” but combined, Kentucky has about two inches for most of the state. Other people’s snow storms.
I agree about those two week snow maps. If we had gotten half of what they showed we would probably be sick of snow.
GFS and new GFS showing a decent hits for parts of Kentucky wed/thurs. Are we close enough for the models to be fairly accurate at this point? We shall see! GFS has been the closest model on snowfall amounts for my areas. I’m gonna trust it this week and see what happens.
