Good evening, folks. Heavy rain is changing to a mix and snow from west to east as temps crash behind a cold front. This system continues to be fairly well behaved, but the precip Is showing signs of slowing down a little. That may give areas of central and eastern Kentucky a little shot at snow.
I really have no changed to my forecast with coatings up to 2″ amounts in some areas. The Weather Prediction Center continues to give a slight risk for 4″ snows into much of central and eastern Kentucky tonight…
That sets up a family feud within the NOAA family. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a slight risk of 4″ snows from the WPC, while the local NWS offices don’t even have a Winter Weather Advisory.
Obviously, I’m kind of in the middle and do expect an impact on travel tonight with a freeze up and a coating to 2″ of snow on top of it. As we have seen many times before, it doesn’t take much around here to cause issues.
A northwest flow develops behind our snow band early Thursday and that may keep some snow showers and flurries going through the morning hours. After a break in the afternoon, an arctic front drops in Thursday evening with a band of light snow and snow showers. That can also cause a few issues.
Temps by Friday morning hit the single digits for some…
Wind chills will be below zero during this time in many areas.
A couple more light snow systems work across the region this weekend. The one with the most potential is Saturday night and Sunday.
The mother load of bitterly cold air then drops into the country early next week. This may cause a healthy band of snow to develop in our region, with the majority of it falling in the arctic air behind another front Monday night and Tuesday…
Check out the morning lows behind that…
Ouch!
I leave you with your Wednesday evening tracking toys…

I’m no expert, but it appears any moisture will be gone by the time the cold gets here.

I just picked up a fairly quick half inch of rain in a short time span in rainy ole Harlan! There should be significant runoff regardless of any snow tonight which can lead to slick spots if temps can make it to 32 this far south??? Tomorrow night looks more slick IMO especially if we can combine with snow showers tomorrow late coupled with the temps tanking and still have water running over the roads down this way from the cliffs. Honestly, I think many of us have a decent shot at an inch of snow tomorrow night due to the dry nature of the snow with the arctic front!

Close to an inch for the day at my residence Terry

Surprisingly no flood advisories yet! It looks like Knox has been under the heaviest rain band in KY for as few hours now!

I’m ready for one of those dustings that becomes a foot, instead of the amount always decreasing as we get closer! Looks like a long rainy winter ahead. New record in 2019?

Thanks Chris. Appreciate you and what you do. Also understand that on this blog, you are not forecasting, but sharing your thoughts. But it’s gonna be cold! Have a good night all.

NWS Jackson is sort of backing off on the measly .25 inches of snow they said was possible at 5:00 today. Said maybe a little freezing rain but roads should be warm enough from temp spike today to make negligible impact. CBs costing prediction might be on the high end of this storm. The cold rarely catches the moisture in our part of the state.

Can’t wait to see what Mother Nature has to deal us over the next month and a half. We might be in for a wild ride with the cold coming, and IMO, the southern jet is not going to just stop producing lows. Now they will roll across cold air. Let’s hope it sustaines itself this time.

We should officially call this winter the “next week” winter. The models have been hinting at the arctic air coming down here to stay at T+7 days for the better part of a month. Remember last week at this time the models were talking about this week being brutal with several snow makers? I just don’t think this is our year for snow.
