Good afternoon, everyone. I have no changes on how I think the rest of the day goes as cold air races in and changes our rain over to a period of snow. This should be able to put down light, slushy accumulations leading to slick spots developing.
Before all this happens, winds are causing issues. Gusts have been well over 40mph at times as heavy rains roll into the region. Watch for flooding issues, later today into the early part of the evening. That’s especially true across the south central and southeastern parts of the state.
A period of wet snow is likely along and behind the front, but the duration of this snow isn’t likely to last more than a few hours for any one location.Light, slushy accumulations should show up in many areas of central and eastern Kentucky.Icy roads may develop into Thursday morning, leading to a few delays and cancellations. This may certainly warrant a Winter Weather Advisory. This is a lot of water that’s going to freeze up on roads and just a little bit of snow will make things rough for a time.
I have no changes on the snow map…
The Weather Prediction Center still has much of central and eastern Kentucky in a slight risk for 4″ snows tonight and early Thursday…
That’s certainly a scenario that can happen if the cold is faster in catching the back edge of the rain shield. I’m just not biting on that one at this point. It’s worth watching this evening, though.
Another round of light snow and snow showers will sweep in here Thursday evening as an arctic front slides through. That will unleash bitterly cold air by Friday morning. Readings may hit the single digits in a few spots. Wind chills may go below zero…
Several systems target the region from the northwest this weekend through next week. We’re likely to put some snow on the ground again at some point Saturday into Sunday as we get a reinforcing shot of arctic air.
The system coming behind that late Monday into Tuesday is one that can develop into something much bigger. It’s being pushed by brutally cold air diving into the country. Something similar to that may show up a few days later.
Let’s get back to the weather of today. I will have the latest on WKYT starting at 4 and will have another update here this evening. Until then, you’re all set to do some tracking…

Thanks Chris. I cant help but feel that one of theses times, the SPC is gonna be right and we will get a surprise. But I also know that most of the time (97%) when we get a good snow it starts as snow and stays that way. At least in our part of the state. But our chances seem to have gained a better chance with the cold air coming in and actually staying in place. Frankly, I think there are more people that will admit they would prefer to see a big snow instead of this steady cold rain… My hubby is on that train. But he doesn’t mind a good snow once in a while either. Have a good afternoon everyone and snow lovers, lets start channeling our thoughts that the cold catches up to the rain faster, but then slows down while it snows! (can’t blame a girl for trying can you?) 😉

crank that snow up!!
Jimbo on January 23, 2019 at 1:40 pm
Same old, same old heavy rain and backside flurries. Just reissue the same forecast every 3 or 4 days.

This made me chuckle because it’s SO TRUE! I’m to the point, if snow is even mentioned for the Huntington area, I just reach for the umbrella………..smh…….

But the Polar Vortex is coming. Even though the lowest forecasted high is 25. I guess it’s a sign of the times when one day at 25 is an “Arctic Blast”.
Bryant on January 23, 2019 at 3:13 pm
Winter is coming next week. No, the week after that. Wait, maybe it’s the following week.
To be fair, there’s a lot of pro mets that are whiffing at this frustrating pattern. Gotta love our “new” winters here in KY. Nothing but crappy rain.
Bobt on January 23, 2019 at 1:43 pm
Someone alluded to my post in the earlier update that “mother nature” didn’t care that meteorogical winter was almost 2/3 gone. Do they not know that meteorogical seasons are more aligned to the true weather than the regular dates of the seasons? Does anyone really consider June 15 to still be Spring time? We might still get snow in March, but it’s not going to lay around long due to sun position. Regardless of early or late spring once mid-February hits there are some nice days starting to get scattered in with the cold.
Bryan on January 23, 2019 at 3:16 pm
The trend is your friend. There is nothing to indicate that the hyped polar vortex is coming. We get a day or two of cold, windy days and then more rain.
Let’s just chuck this away and move on to spring.

Local Mets giving no snow in Huntington area Ashland

Not true. WSAZ calling for a coating to an inch.

Is true. Do some research for a change. You’re worse than Schroeder…

One inch. would be EPIC 🙂
Drew on January 23, 2019 at 3:24 pm
No kidding.. I’d be thrilled to finally have an inch of snow

Forecast for Central Kentucky should be nothing to a coating Bank on nothing!!!
WM on January 23, 2019 at 3:19 pm
I know I’m the minority, but I get a little sick in the stomach hearing the words “arctic blast” and “polar vortex”. Snow is great, but this rain freezing to ice and single digit temps is not.
BengalFan on January 23, 2019 at 3:30 pm
Look at the radar there will be no snow even on the backside of this thing. Maybe snow for 15 minutes Currently at Richmond heavy rain 51°

10% chance of a 4″ snow from the SPC equates to little to no accumulation for most everyone. Like were the pattern is headed and I am on board with BubbaG on at least one plowable snow.
Jim B on January 23, 2019 at 4:15 pm
Gonna run out of precip in central before cold gets here
Prelude on January 23, 2019 at 4:59 pm
Were you expecting something different?
Terry on January 23, 2019 at 5:15 pm
It is interesting how the rain is really being slowed down from advancing into far eastern and SE KY. It seems some slowing down of the westward progression may (MAY) help the cold catch more of the precip for more of a chance of wet snow way out in my area…just my weather geek observation and not overly excited but trying to muster a positive statement which is hard to do lately!
Drew on January 23, 2019 at 6:07 pm
I have wondered this as well. I would love to see an overachiever in eastern ky
Anyone who has read my thoughts knows how much I talk about the Arctic Oscillation(AO), the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO), the Pacific North American(PNA) teleconnections. While I believe the AO and the PNA are in perfect agreement for cold and snow region wide, the NAO has been a persistent obstacle to achieving a long duration cold and snowy pattern.
Terry on January 23, 2019 at 6:28 pm
Yes, but why is the million dollar question? I always though the PV displacement favors a negative NAO but not happening this year!

yeah….pretty pathetic when rain is predominantly the only thing on those “tracking toys”

NWS Jackson update at 5 says moisture is going to outrun the cold. Typical Kentucky weather. Lucy pulls the football once again.

All these let downs must mean something real special is headed our way…right??
