Good afternoon, folks. Major flooding is underway across parts of the bluegrass state and that will only worsen as the evening wears on. Rounds of heavy rain will continue to lift in from the southwest, with strong and a few severe storms joining the mix.
The threat for strong and severe storms is now mainly across the south central parts of the state, but the potential for high winds is area-wide. Wind gusts of 50mph-60mph will be possible this evening into the wee hours of Sunday morning…
High winds can cause damage, with or without thunderstorms.
I have you all set to track the action through the evening. Use the interactive radar to go anywhere in the country to track this storm. From the blizzard in the plains to the severe weather to our south, live storm chaser streams are available for you…
Have a good one and take care.
So the main storms and rain are more south. Good for some of us, but not for other folks. Makes more sense now, since did not seem to be as north as forecast yesterday.
Be nice to have one solid week of no rain. Dry it out 🙂
They are not more south.
The next SPC update is about two hours from now.
There have been some tornado touchdowns along the Tennessee line with Mississippi/Alabama. Not only visual sightings, also debris signatures on radar. But tornado/severe thunderstorm chances will decrease further north into northern central Tennessee and into Kentucky.
Unfortunately, no real way to decrease the heavy rain falling over already saturated grounds 🙁 .
Yeah, if model runs for tonight verifies, it could get really bad in SE KY but worse for east TN! Maybe, the more stable, rained out atmosphere this way will reduce the excessive rainfall tonight.
I have .70 inches of rain so far at my tree in LouMetro. Got a new rain gauge and my inner geek in shining through this afternoon.
Just hope my sump pumps survive this weather. Ive heard them constantly sending water out of the basement the last few days.
Situation is not good here in east Tennessee. Many places have already accumulated four plus inches of rain and it’s started again now. Many roads are flooded and several rescues were reported.
Well, our dry period earlier today sure didn’t last.
Numerous t-storms have rumbled through Nashville this evening. While not necessarily reaching severe criteria, the storms were still fairly strong with vigorous wind gusts. At one point about 4000 customers without power (me not included).
Perhaps of even bigger concern is the continued flooding issues. First responders in and adjacent to Nashville are currently conducting water rescues.
The crawlspace had never gotten wet in the couple of years my wife and I have had this house. Sure hope this good luck doesn’t run out…..
At least a little good news regarding severe weather.
The SPC’s newest update has significantly downgraded the severe thunderstorm/tornado threat for Kentucky and Tennessee. The main threat for damaging straight line winds and twisters is for Alabama, although a small risk still remains for much of central Tennessee and a small part of south-central Kentucky.
One of the two Tornado Watch boxes was allowed to expire earlier. The Storm Prediction Center says that the second watch (which includes much of central Tennessee up to the Kentucky line) will likely be allowed to expire at 10 pm central if not cancelled early as the severe threat is becoming more isolated.
Wish I could say that the flood threat is becoming more isolated. I’ve received about 1.90 inches in my rain gauge this evening alone.
London closing in on wettest February in its 65 year history, already over 10″ for the month
I have 11.89 on the month and this last round hasn’t reached me yet but getting close.
Doesn’t look as bad tonight on the radar. Hopefully this is the last of prolonged periods of rain .
Looks like we are going to miss most of this worst round….heavy to the north and heavy to the south but thiner/lighter for us in the middle. Still may develop a few heavy bands later.
London looks like they have set their wettest February mark. At 10.67″ and still raining, this would beat the 1956 mark of 10.64″, and and this follows 2018’s now 3rd wettest February.
I wish this forecast had even come close.
Would be better than all this rain.
CB what changed to cause this forecast to not verify?
Truly interested in learning.
Bailey is forecasting December temperatures to remain about normal with 3-6 inches of snow.
Things are expected to pick up in January, as temperatures could be 3-6 degrees below normal, and Bailey expects anywhere from 8-14 inches of snowfall.
February may bring the most snow for some areas of Kentucky, as Bailey believes snowfall could range from 10-16 inches while temperatures will be around five degrees colder than normal.
It’s called a completely busted long range forecast, it happens. I’m sure CB shakes his head religiously and throws his hands up in the air and says “I couldn’t of been more wrong on this winter forecast if I tried”.
By no means is that a knock on CB. Sometimes the winter forecast is close and other times Mother Nature will make a meterologist feel like the Auburn basketball team did today after UK took them to the woodshed.
Heavy line of thunderstorms pushing out of TN heading this way, will probably cause new flooding issues.
