Damaging winds and large hail are the main severe weather threats today. These same storms can drop a few inches of rain in under an hour, so watch for flash flood issues.
What you see today is what you’re going to continue to see through the 4th of July holiday weekend. Strong storms and flash flooding issues are possible each and every day, so please keep that in mind. Some of our 4th of July parades, fireworks shows and cookouts may be impacted by the storms. Have a backup plan to be safe.
There’s a cooler pattern settling in behind the stormy weather. Watch for a trough to dig in across the eastern half of the country later next week…
That’s the same one many of the seasonal models have been hinting at for some time now.
As always, I leave you with your storm tracking tools for the day…
Possible Watch Areas
Make it a great day and take care.
So far in my County of Taylor we have not recorded any rainfall or severe weather the last three days. Just west of my county they recorded 2.25 inches of rain yesterday. My luck will probably run out tomorrow LOL but, I haven’t any plans anyway, just to stay indoors and out of the heat.
Well, Harlan Mesonet is rapidly approaching the 50 inch mark year-to-date! I record a great deal less rainfall at my house as I am in the low elevations in Harlan Co plus, the topography rain shadows my area a lot at times (depends on the direction of atmospheric lift). Regardless, I am close to 40 inches on the year at my house with a dozen plus Mesonet sites now over or very near 40 inches on the year!
Terry, it’s interesting to see the showers build up right next to the Cumberland Mountains on the radar. The warm air rising due to topography. While other areas just scattered showers and other’s dry due to sinking air like here in my county of Taylor. Are you measuring your own rainfall or is there a site that records rainfall for Harlan ? I have no idea how much rain we have had for the month and year to date. Can’t find this information anywhere on the internet.
I keep my own records:) There is not a lot of official record keeping in my area. A lot of the time, you will see Harlan on TWC showing “as reported at Jackson” or “as reported in London/Corbin.” This is not very reliable for current data or short-term forecasts when Jackson and London/Corbin is over 50 air miles away! I hate not having official data to go by. Reporting weather at 4,000ft like the Black Mt Mesonet does no good for the population of Harlan since almost 95% plus of people live over 2,000ft in lower elevation, with Black Mt looking like the arctic circle in temperature compared to the valley.
Thanks Terry, I just looked on the Kentucky Mesonet and right now the dew point in Harlan is 66 degrees and the air temperature is at 69 degrees. Here in Taylor County the dew point 72 degrees and the air temperature is 82 degrees. Your the most comfortable in the whole state of Kentucky ! I wouldn’t mind living at 4000 feet in a cabin surrounded by Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron with a trout stream and frequent snowstorms in the Winter starting at Thanksgiving. LOL
LOL. YOU HAVE TO BE ON THE MT TOP TO EVER SEE MUCH SNOW UNLESS WE HAVE A DECENT WINTER LIKE 2015. ALSO, THE DEWPOINT IS OVER 70 IN HARLAN AT THE MOMENT, 71
That dew point I found on the Kentucky Mesonet in Harlan was probably not updated. I don’t know when they record the latest dew points and air temperatures and then post them on the site. Different times for different areas I guess. Here on my thermometer it’s currently 86.5 degrees and the dew point is 72 degrees and there is showers all around us especially along the Ohio River. Winds aloft must have changed to more of zonal flow with pockets of cold air aloft. Stronger storms are showing up around and east of Louisville.
I would think that the northwest flow off Lake Michigan would pile up tons of snow at 4000 feet on top of Black Mountain ? But we would have to be in the Arctic Vortex to cause that to happen.
Have great afternoon and evening everyone !
Absolute downpour in Knox right now. Had one yesterday too. Got to love the rain in this state.
Our power was out for about 8hrs yesterday
Dang, I am still at 0.00 for July. Harlan’s terrain is destroying ever single storm headed my direction! You can literally watch each cell get sheared to death on radar.
RIP Jared Lorenzen. 🙁
