Good Tuesday, everyone. Our early season blast of winter weather is nothing short of awesome and is living up to to it’s billing. Record snows fell in some areas on Monday and now comes the potential for record cold as Old Man Winter comes out swinging.
This is mainly a tracking update, but I do want to throw some fresh thoughts your way:
- Our system snows wind down across southeastern Kentucky early this morning.
- Temps to start out the day will range from the middle teens to low 20s but wind chills will be in the single digits at times.
- Slick travel is a good bet for many areas.
- Highs this afternoon stay in the 20s with a wind chill in the teens. That’s super hard to do this early in the season.
- Don’t sleep on the northwest arctic flow coming down the length of Lake Michigan and into central and eastern Kentucky. A few snow showers and snow squalls will likely develop. Those could drop some hit and run accumulations and lower visibility at times. This might be enough to keep the Winter Weather Advisory rolling through the afternoon, at least in my eyes.
- Clearing skies tonight will allow temps to head close to record territory by Wednesday morning. Readings from 10 to 15 will be possible, but the colder valleys may reach the high single digits. Wind chills will be colder than the actual temps.
I will be back for the usual updates later today. Until then, keep on tracking this big blast of early season winter weather…

Have a great day and take care.
I am near an inch with light snow still falling. IF the cold would have been in place instead of mostly rain in Harlan, we would have had a thumping as I had over a half inch rain last night with the change over around 3AM as most of the precip was already over!
I can’t complain as this is cool to see this early:)
Once again an underachiever for Knox Co. Coating to 2 inches ended up on the coating end. Congrats once again to everyone that got more early season eye candy than that. Knox County is one of the few spots in the state still sitting under a 20+ year snow dome. Just something about this spot that kills winter weather. Oh, well have a great day.
What saved Harlan was the last hooray of heavy moisture moved out of TN between 3 and 5…snowing wild for a short time. I noticed you missed that as you were in a donut hole once it finally got cold enough for the change over. I was in that same donut hole for a while but got that last bit of moisture. Sorry you missed out:( I still didn’t get as much as most did in Central and West KY but that last bit of moisture saved my butt!
That donut holes is infamous here in Knox. Something with the terrain also causes a strange loop to come from below and above us a lot of times delaying the rain / snow changeover. Snow east and west of here while still raining. You will see that spot on a lot of snow projection maps. It’s like the snow line will be 50 miles south of the border but there is an area coming up through Whitley and Knox that is still above freezing with a later changeover. Odd.
I officially measured right at 0.9 inches. Close to an inch but far less than a lot in KY. Still, no complaints this early in the season. Maybe your luck will change this winter….I hope anyways!
Looks like almost an inch in North Richmond. Cold air didn’t quite catch up to the moisture in time, but that’s par for the course in Kentucky. Any snow is a bonus in November. Heck, this matches one of our meager events last winter. Last two years have been wimpier than wimpy for snow. Nowhere to go but up 😉
Cars have two inches on them. Hah! That’s a bigger snow than the last two winters 🙂
Ok I’m ready for spring now. 75 to 80 & frogs chirping. Snow lover’s got there snow shot for the winter so this should make them happy for a little while before needing another shot of snow.
Not quite, LOL. We have had a lot of crappy, almost snowless winters. This winter can bring it as far as I am concerned:P
I’m ready for a BIG snow!
Me too!
Sending snow wishes your way!
About an inch here in western ky. Has CB announced his winter forecast yet if not when is he doing it ?. Have a great day!!!
Temps still have not made it below 30 in my area.
About an inch in Middlesboro which tops our total for the entirety of last winter. I had just never gotten excited about it because of the timing. This would have been awesome for Christmas (which instead is likely to be 60 degrees with sun or rain) but not so much for early November.
About an inch in Harlan. We lucked up as an extra surge of moisture came up out of TN for us far SE counties. We almost totally missed out but received some at the last minute.
I received a little over an inch near Huntington. Better than I expected since it 70 degrees yesterday. Snow looks a little odd on the trees especially since there are a lot still with leaves and some are still green. I think this snow event exceeded any single snow I had last year.
I am glad:) I watched your area fill in with some decent “radar” snow around midnight but radars can deceive. Not a bad start to a super early new snow season at all!
Chicago had its snowiest November 11th on record, with 3.4 inches having fallen at O’Hare, and broke the all-time record lows for Nov. 11th and 12th at 13 and 7 degrees, respectively. The 7 degrees this morning here is the coldest temp ever for so early in the cold season up to this date!
In the SW suburbs of Chicago we had around an inch and a half of snow, similar to what many areas in Kentucky had. I didn’t have to shovel my driveway since not enough snow accumulated on the pavement, but parts of the driveway are a sheet of ice because the temps fell so fast on Monday.
On the other side of Lake Michigan a friend of mine for years in the nursery business reported 15 inches of snow on the ground.
dusting in south corbin, stayed up for the heavy snow bands only to watch them go north and south in the end.
Snow starting back up here again.
About 2 inches of snow in my backyard on top of the hill here in Taylor county. Temperature is currently 20 degrees F with cloudy skies. Great to see that it still can snow in November in Kentucky. The trees are beautiful like an old fashion Christmas card.
I’m guessing today is just not my day for temperatures in the lower 80’s with low humidity and a gentle SW breeze. Considering I have the white blanket of death (aka snow) that unfortunately accumulated. Smh
FWIW, I’m 75% confident we will get more snow than the last two winters combined. The last two years was not much, so not exactly a big bar 😉
Agreed. I only need around a half inch more snow to have more than the last 2 winters combined total of 1.5 inches.
I already threw a penalty flag at winter for unnecessary artic air intrusion and deliberately covering up my property with the white blanket of death (aka snow). I will have none of it this early in the season and after further review this was a deliberate act from the Polar Vortex to intentionally make me cold and unhappy. This will result in a automatic return of above normal temperatures.
