Good Thursday, folks. It’s another cold day across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, but we have a milding trend on the way. This will boost temps as we roll into the weekend and into Christmas week. At the same time, we are watching a big southern storm system that has a shot at bringing some rain our way.
Let’s start with today and roll forward. Temps this morning are frigid with teens showing up for many and a wind chill that can reach the high singles at times. Partly sunny skies this afternoon will boost your temps from the middle 30s to mid 40s depending on where you live
Friday sees readings making a run at 50 degrees for many with a mix of sun and clouds showing up.
This is when we start watching our southern storm system in what is a highly anomalous pattern. A big cutoff low is working from west to east across the deep south this weekend, but the models looked suspect with how they were handling this and I pointed that out. Now, we see those models edging this whole system farther north, potentially bringing some rain into Kentucky.
The NAM only goes through Sunday morning at 7am, but shows rain coming in…
That’s similar to the Canadian…
And the Euro…
You know it’s boring when I’m focusing on the potential for a little rain impacting the southeastern part of the state. 🙁
Still, we carry on and I will have your normal updates later today. Make it a good one and take care.
According to many forecast now, we may get a few clouds from the disturbance to our south, which will likely move out into the Atlantic. Then ridging will take over for the for the next seven days. Maybe our Winter, which starts Saturday will turn out mild and dry ? This happened in 1975, when Spring started in mid- January. We will just have to wait until next Autumn to see if different factors come together to give us that snowy Winter.
Omit one of the for’s and it’s Spring weather started in mid-January. Sorry it’s still early LOL.
I’m not saying this going to happen sometimes when it warm up like it supposed to next week we better enjoy it. Mother nature may have something up to its sleeve when January’ rolls around. I don’t like this setup it could bring something that we don’t want. Have a good day!!
What more cold rain!?! Because if you’re referring to anything on the wintery side that’s just not going to happen anytime in the near future.
I’m good with that.
Prelude, Ky has its swing of weather I have live here too long that it has happen. It happen back in1977-78 had a such warm up late December then bam ended up having the snowest and coldest winter on record in January through march.
I remember that we had four inches of snow for New Years Day and the temperature dropped into the single digits in 1977. It briefly warmed up and it was dry. About mid-January an Arctic air m*a*s*s dropped south all the way to the Gulf of Mexico and then the snowstorms started one after the other for southwest Indiana. That Winter we didn’t have any rain or ice storms just a lot of beautiful snow ! In the Winters of 1977-78 was the Winter to end all future Winters in my opinion.
Winterlover with all do respect you had to go back 42 years as a reference that is a long long time ago. It’s weather anything can happen you gotta keep the faith snow lovers. I can’t believe I said that as I am no fan of the cold nor the snow.
You are definitely right about that, Winterlover. I remember one year in the middle-late 60’s that we had really warm couple of days before Christmas, even had storms Christmas Eve evening, then it started snowing like crazy early afternoon on Christmas Day. The reason I remember is that my grandpa was really good friends w/ a local businessman and he got him to play Santa Clause for me. He had had a wee much “eggnog”(lol!) by that time and had someone bring him out to our house. I gave my Mom a lotta guff because she made me buy “Santa” a gift(a hideous red/green tie…). Then on Christmas Day, my aunt in Lebanon, KY hosted the family and we had to leave shortly after eating/ opening gifts so that we could get home before the roads got too bad. And of course, 77-78 winter…we went back to school Jan.2nd, in pouring rain, and school let out early that day because of it changing to sleet & snow, and we probably had school a total of 5 days from Jan 3-end of March, because back then, when it snowed, it flat-out SNOWED!!!! 🙂
Debbie, I really enjoyed reading your story of your past Christmas. It sounds almost like our house at Christmas. My Granddad played Santa Claus and we got to open our gifts on Christmas Eve. Back then I had a brother and three sisters. I still don’t know how my Mother did all that cooking, and baking cookies and still kept the house work up. Fond memories now, and how time flies.
Thelma Lou is pretty disappointed, she was really expecting the final week and change of December to have a pretty wintery look to it. Maybe the snow will come when the kids head back to school after Christmas break.
I remember we use to have thunderstorms and warm windy weather back in the 1950’s-60’s and the next morning we would have eight + inches of snow on the ground. We all went out and built snowmen and a snow fort and enjoyed lots of other Winter fun. What happen folks ? There are a lot of explanations out there but are they what we want to know and believe. Also, the local ponds use to freeze over enough to go skating or sliding and sledding on the snow covered hills. Again what happened ?
This coming Christmas Day in my county of Taylor the weather forecast that just came out calls for sunny skies with afternoon temperatures near 60 degrees. I guess that’s better than cloudy and cold and heavy rains. In my opinion, I think Winters now days have retreated to the boarder of the United States and Canada. But, I notice on the weather maps this morning that the lake effect snows have started in the Northeast. At lease some places will have a White Christmas.
