Good afternoon, everyone. Mild weather is playing the role of the Grinch and giving us a very mild stretch of weather for the big Christmas season. As we roll into the weekend, we see some big changes rolling in as Old Man Winter starts to show back up.
We know the week is mild, but I’m also watching for a little cloud cover from time to time. The NAM is spitting out some clouds for Christmas Day and it’s also showing the potential for a few sprinkles and isolated showers…
As we head into the weekend, we watch a trough in the west ejecting out into the plains and then into our part of the world. How this all plays out exactly is yet to be determined. Regardless, this ushers in a winter looking pattern to end the year, with that pattern getting fully established in early January.
Let’s focus on the weekend system, first. As mentioned, the models don’t agree on how this plays out and flip from run to run. The GFS shows a potent cold front sweeping through here with showers and storms, gusty winds, a big temp drop and then some wraparound snows…
Watch the temp drop from Saturday evening into Sunday then check out how cold the temps are through the rest of the year…
The ICON has a similar look to the GFS…
As we head into later next week, we are likely to see another cold shot diving into the region with a potential winter weather maker. Again, you will see the models handle everything very differently from run to run…
GFS
I will send you another update later this evening. Until then, make it a good one and take care.
Louisville has a chance of reaching the record high of 68 degrees on Christmas Day. I guess it depends on the extent of the clouds.
On another weather note, the big upper low that has brought all the rain to the south the past few days is heading east / southeast, not to far from the Caribbean. Looks like the GFS scored a coup on this one.
Sad when clouds are the main focus of the update for the next 5 or 6 days. Another example of how bleak our Winters have become over the last 4 years. Oh well, Happy Holidays Everyone
Bleak at best. Maybe it gets better beyond 7 days. I know, always “7 days out” or “next week”, “next month”, etc. Seriously, I hope we all at least end up average on snowfall by March. I hope you and I both get one decent hit. Have a great Christmas with snow thoughts for the New Year!
Thank You and Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Louisville currently blow-torching at 63 degrees. Models have underestimated the warmth, as usual. Can Louisville make a run at 70 degrees over the next few days???
12Z EURO has no snow across the eastern US outside of the northern states over the next 10 days. Cold air is definitely trying to make a comeback into the country New Years week, but to what extent and how far south and east it makes it only time will tell.
