Good Sunday, everyone. Waves of heavy rain and thunderstorms are rolling across the region, bringing the potential for high water issues. A few of the storms could be strong, with a low-end threat for a severe storm or two across our southern counties.
This is a setup that’s been well advertised here for roughly a week now. The number one threat continues to be flooding as rainfall of 1″-3″ will be likely for many. Locally higher amounts will show up and those are the areas most at risk for flash flooding. The main risk is from general flooding conditions to develop late today or into the evening. That’s when the heaviest rains show up.
A Flood Watch and Flash Flood Watch continues for much of the state…
In addition to the high water threat, there’s the chance for a few strong or severe storms, especially in the south. Here’s the current Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
We will see what, if anything, comes of that severe threat. High winds and hail would be the primary players if they do develop.
Behind this comes a colder and drier wind for Monday, but a few flurries and snow showers may sneak in by New Year’s Eve, especially in the north. This will be followed up by another flood threat Thursday and Friday as our pattern goes to winter after that. Could our first winter storm threat be lurking early the following week?
I will have updates later today. As always, I have you all set with your heavy rain and storm tracking toys…
Possible Watch Areas
Have a great Sunday and take care.
I watch weather channel this morning and they stated we will be on the mild side untill middle of January.
Better late than never if you like snow.
I am fine with snow even in early March. It is by April when I dislike getting snow after the growing season is underway. This is about the only month I dislike snow, not that we get much or often in April, but it happens. Only one big one in recent history was the early April “Dogwood Snow” of the Appalachian and Deep South region. I was too young to remember but Harlan received between 18 and 24 inches with snow as far south as Montgomery Alabama! I guess if this happens again, I would still be excited but not fond of snow after the growing season starts.

I remember that snowstorm clearly. I got almost 24 inches. It snowed hard for over 36 hours. The temp stayed about 32 for the whole event but it was heavy enough to overcome air temp, warm ground, sun angle and long daylight. Amazing storm, probably never see anything like that ever again. On a side note, just saw the warm wave is predicted to roll thru all of January. Looks like a few backside flurry events.
Could my area in Huntington get winter weather early next week? No. We never get anything! Lol
I’ve enjoyed the past few days…warm, sunny, got me itching to get out in the garden. Have had the windows open and took some nice walks.
As much I love me some snow sometimes, nothing beats a nice, warm, sunshine day!
Check out that lync above, you and Jimbo also had over a foot of snow from that same very late season storm that clobbered Harlan. Unfortunately, I was only 4 and remember only by stories, pics and images. I am not fond of spring snow but that April 3rd event was cool!
Here is the same lync again:
