Good Monday to one and all and welcome to a brand new week. I hope each of you had a fantastic weekend and got a chance to enjoy another round of pleasant temps. We will hang on to the cooler than normal weather for a few more days before we warm it up a bit by the end of the week. Overall, this is still one heck of a nice pattern for August.
I am going to mix it up a bit this week and talk a little bit about the fall and winter ahead. I will get you started on your wintry way before this post is over.
Our short term weather features similar conditions today into Tuesday. We will have a mix of sun and clouds and a small threat for a shower or thunderstorm. The GFS rain total through Wednesday shows the scattered nature of what we’re dealing with…
Temps will generally run in the upper 70s and lower 80s for many.
We will warm it up into the middle 80s for the end of the week for the central and east. The west will see readings heading closer to 90 for a day or two.
It’s once into the weekend into next week that the overall weather pattern across the eastern part of the country MAY hinge upon the tropics. A system in the Atlantic should become Isaac very soon. Several of the medium range forecast models have been showing an impact on the southeast coast from this storm. That is nowhere close to being a certainty, but it is worth watching. Here’s the overall look at a busy tropics…

That’s a sure sign fall is upon us and that means winter isn’t THAT far away. Yes, it is a bit early to get too specific on a winter forecast, but that doesn’t stop everyone. The folks at Accuweather are out with their super duper early winter forecast…
That and $7.50 will get you a cup of coffee nowadays. 🙂 Here’s the link to their short writeup on the outlook: http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/snow-for-i-95-corridor-northeast-winter/69820
I will give you a little more insight into the fall and winter as the week wears on. That will include outlooks from various seasonal forecast models and some of my early thoughts. Spread the word!
Have a great Monday and take care.
Thanks for the update, Chris!
I’ve got photographic proof that Fall 2012 is upon us. The leaves of some of the understory trees, in the Red River Gorge, have begun turning.

Loving the cooler weather!
I wonder if anyone knows what the summer of 1993 was like, that year in Frankfort we had 4 inches of snow on Christmas, and the Jan 17th 1994 Blizzard (20 inches of snow and 27 below 0 temps! Just curious if their are any trends or comparisons to this summer weather?
Last Fall was looking like 1993 if I recall then the winter went the totally opposite direction. The Fall of 1993 was below normal in temperatures for sure.
I’m sure Frankfort didn’t get rain for about 6 months that year, too.
I have to help set up and then work a huge party this weekend and I was so pleased to see mid-80’s for highs in the forecast. Well, every time I check, the temps have gone up another degree! Might as well prepare for low 90’s…yuck!!
Well, given how much the models trend west in the winter, I’d say we are due for a smackdown here in central Kentucky….6″….8″…maybe more…at least once. Would be nice to get a big snow with about 40 MPH wind at the same time to kind of feel the “fury” of a snowSTORM…..and not just a little pretty blanket of it. 🙂
That a boy, Chris! No matter how encouraging long-range winter forecasts MAY be…gotta be conservative and take things with a substantial grain of salt. 😉
