Good Wednesday everyone. We’ve made it to the middle of the week and maw nature has delivered us a nice little taste of fall temps. This is the coldest air to invade Kentucky since back in April. The next blast of late October air is on deck and should arrive this weekend. It looks like it can deliver even colder temps than what we are seeing right now.
Our day is starting out with clear skies and temps not too far from 40 degrees. Some of the typical cold spots may dip into the upper 30s to start things out. Let’s see how low the readings get from the Kentucky Mesonet sites:
Feel free to give us an update on the morning lows from where you live.
Sunny skies today and temps in the mid and upper 60s will give us an amazing weather day across the bluegrass state. Might be a good evening for a pot of chili! 😉
Thursday will start out with temps similar to what we have today and then warm into the mid 70s by the afternoon. Skies will continue to run partly sunny. Friday will be another day in the 70s as winds begin to pick up and clouds increase ahead of our next plunge of chilly air for the weekend. I can’t rule out a scattered shower by the end of the day.
Saturday looks to feature a much better chance for showers and some thunder as a strong cold front swings through. Temps are tricky because of the timing of the front, but many areas look to stay in the 60s as winds crank up. The air behind our front for Sunday and Monday is very chilly and the European Model shows it…
It will be interesting to see where we go from here. My initial thought is for the pattern to relax a bit and allow us to hang around normal as we start October. The signals from some of the modelling suggests we may see a renewed push of chilly air shots. The NAO is forecast by the European Model to go pretty strongly negative…
If that is the case, we may see additional blocking as we say hello to October.
Have a wonderful Wednesday and take care.
I am one of your viewers from wsaz…. I miss you being on the weather! I was wondering can you tell yet if we are going to have much snow this winter… I have seen a wooly worm black as coal, and so has my daughter who has seen 3 black ones…. Thank you. Janet

45 deg here at 7:30 AM
39.2 was the low at my house in Lawrenceburg (at about 7:10 A.M.)
Our low was 46 at 6:15 a.m. I have the chili fixings ready to go for tonight, Chris! MMMM
So, from a fairly new weather geek, what does additional blocking mean? Does that mean that it will continue to stay cooler than normal?
Btw, it looked like a light frost on my yard this morning in London, but I could have just been hopeful. 😉
The NAO going negative generally does mean cooler temps. Think back during winter 2010-11 when we had all the snow and cold, including the rare white Christmas for places as far south as Auburn, Alabama.
However, keep in mind the NAO is only one of many factors (such as El Niño/La Niña).
BTW, during my drive to work this morning here in Nashville, my car thermometer indicated 47 degrees F.
45 degrees in Raceland, KY at about 7:30 this morning.
