Good Tuesday everyone and thanks for making KWC one of your stops for weather. October is off to a rocking start with heavy rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and some big temp swings. The pattern I’m seeing taking shape over the next week is anything but October looking and takes on more of a winter look.
An area of low pressure is lifting northward across Kentucky today and will bring another round of two of showers and thunderstorms. Central and eastern Kentucky will be on the warm side of the low as temps soar well into the 70s on a gusty southwesterly wind. This is where a few of the storms may be strong or even severe. Track it all…

Cooler winds will blow on Wednesday as the low pulls off to our north. Thursday looks like the best weather day we see for a while with highs in the 70s and partly sunny skies.
The change begins on Friday as a cold front works into the Ohio Valley. This front will have cooler air behind it and should also crank out some gusty showers of thunderstorms. A second front looks to enter the picture later Saturday into early Sunday and this is the one that’s packing the punch. Look at the amount of cold air showing up on the European Model…
That’s some big time cold air invading much of the country. Notice how the second front Saturday into Sunday slows down as low pressure develops along it. That low works from Texas into the eastern Great Lakes and that’s a late fall or early winter storm track. That may even have a swath of snow on the far northern edge of it. Speaking of snow… you are going to be hearing a lot about it over the next few weeks as the flakes fly early for many areas of the country. The GFS Ensembles for early Sunday looks the part…
The air moving in here for Sunday into Monday should produce highs struggling to get much past 50-55 degrees and lows likely going below freezing.
There should be another big plunge of cold later next week. Is this a signal for what’s ahead for the upcoming winter? Time will tell.
Have a terrific Tuesday and take care.
Bring on an early winter. Fingers crossed that we actually get a winter this next season! Go snow!
Why isn’t anybody else talking about lows going below freezing this weekend or early next week? 😉
If it starts snowing this early, everyone on the blog will be complaining about snow by thanksgiving!
Not me. 🙂
Me either. 🙂
Me either!!!!
My husband and I have been paying attention to the signs that the old timers would watch… We had lots of heavy fogs in the month of Aug. which was said that, that would be how many snows we had, The yellow jackets have build their nest on or just above ground which is said to be a sign of bad weather. The corn husk this year was thick and tuff which is another sign. Oh yea! and a big black wolly worm… Does any one have any to add?
Another person posted about the acorns a couple weeks ago. She and I have both noticed that the acorns are chewed up or only the caps are being left on the ground. Most falls, our yard is covered in acorns until I toss them into the woods. This year all I’m finding is the caps and chewed up bits of acorn. I watched a squirrel bury a pile of them yesterday. I have never seen a squirrel do that right in front of me. I was standing on my back porch and he was about ten yards away. He had this look like, “Gotta get this done right now!!” 🙂
yes that was me and the acorns are even worse now and the squirrels and chipmunks are running everywhere with the acorns, i feel like i am walking on marbles beside my house
We have tons of acorns too, and squirrels everywhere!
Also– the holly berry trees I am seeing around the neighborhood are LOADed down right now– supposed to be a sign of a cold snowy winter. 😀
I hope we don’t have anything catastrophic happen, but I would like a prolonged freeze to kill off the bugs and allergens!
I’ll second that! Been a terrible allergy year for me.
Had a decent mist transitioned to rain going near UK about half an hour ago despite nothing being on the radar.
I think a lot of the signs are pointing to a colder, harsher winter for these parts.
You can tell a front is going through here—skies are turning low and overcast, and the chill in the air is picking up. Fall is certainly in the air!
abt 4pm this eve we had VERY dark clouds, some heavy rain and then a BEAUTIFUL rainbow all within abt 20 mins time.
I remember things were looking up this time last year…love talking about the encouraging signs but after last year, I’m forced into the position of ‘believe it when I see it’…
It is very possible that Monday morning (if not Sunday morning) could provide a killing freeze. Skip frost and go straight to freeze.
The medium range forecast shows a very very meridional look to the upper level flow, and later in the month this should transition into wild swings in the weather. We may go into a supercharged pattern in a couple of weeks.
I wonder if we will have any record lows…Been looking at some of the record lows for october from other years.. looks to me like if october can break a few record lows winter will be colder than normal with some good snowfall..so keep your fingers crossed for lots of record breaking lows in october..lol..
