Good Tuesday everyone and thanks for making KWC one of your stops for weather. October is off to a rocking start with heavy rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and some big temp swings. The pattern I’m seeing taking shape over the next week is anything but October looking and takes on more of a winter look.

An area of low pressure is lifting northward across Kentucky today and will bring another round of two of showers and thunderstorms. Central and eastern Kentucky will be on the warm side of the low as temps soar well into the 70s on a gusty southwesterly wind. This is where a few of the storms may be strong or even severe. Track it all…

Cooler winds will blow on Wednesday as the low pulls off to our north. Thursday looks like the best weather day we see for a while with highs in the 70s and partly sunny skies.

The change begins on Friday as a cold front works into the Ohio Valley. This front will have cooler air behind it and should also crank out some gusty showers of thunderstorms. A second front looks to enter the picture later Saturday into early Sunday and this is the one that’s packing the punch. Look at the amount of cold air showing up on the European Model…

That’s some big time cold air invading much of the country. Notice how the second front Saturday into Sunday slows down as low pressure develops along it. That low works from Texas into the eastern Great Lakes and that’s a late fall or early winter storm track. That may even have a swath of snow on the far northern edge of it. Speaking of snow… you are going to be hearing a lot about it over the next few weeks as the flakes fly early for many areas of the country. The GFS Ensembles for early Sunday looks the part…

The air moving in here for Sunday into Monday should produce highs struggling to get much past 50-55 degrees and lows likely going below freezing.

There should be another big plunge of cold later next week. Is this a signal for what’s ahead for the upcoming winter? Time will tell.

Have a terrific Tuesday and take care.
