Good afternoon, folks. Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms are pressing across the state today, kicking off a weekend that can feature local high water issues. These storms are being fueled by moisture streaming north from the Gulf of Mexico. The same Gulf that may see two hurricanes showing up at the same time in a few days.

The setup out there today through Sunday will feature periods of showers and storms. These storms won’t move a whole lot and that means flash flooding is possible in a few areas. No, it’s not raining all the dang time or everywhere at the same time. Just want to be shout that for the people in the back. 🙂

Here are your afternoon storm tracking radars…

Again, watch for local issues through the weekend.

The big story in the weather world continues to be our two tropical systems heading toward the Gulf of Mexico. I actually giggle a bit when I see weather folks on twitter just now figuring this setup out. Reporting the weather and actually forecasting the weather are two vastly different things. For those regular readers of this site, this has been talked about on here for more than a week now.

The latest from the National Hurricane Center continues to take these systems to hurricane strength and into the Gulf late this weekend and early next week. Here’s the latest on Tropical Storm Laura…

Here’s Tropical Depression 14…

Both of those storms will have to fight off the impacts from land masses over the next few days. They both may not get cranking until they are free to roam over the open waters of the Gulf.

Let’s take a look at what the hurricane models are currently forecasting. Here’s Laura…

Here we go with TD 14…

A few thoughts on this setup:

  • Both systems will struggle to strengthen until they are into the Gulf. Each of these may then blow up pretty quickly.
  • What impact will they have on one another? Can we get a little Fujiwara effect where they pinwheel around one another? 14 may wind up tugging Laura west of the current guidance.
  • There is an increased potential moisture from one or both of these systems can be drawn northward into Kentucky later next week. This is something we will have to watch.

I’m off from my tv gig today, so there’s a chance I throw out another update later this evening. The weather never takes a day off, so why should I? 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your day and take care.
