Good afternoon, folks. Showers and thunderstorms continue to be scattered across the region today, bringing locally heavy rains with them. The main weather story continues to be the twin tropical troubles in the Gulf of Mexico and whether one of them can impact our weather.

Before we get to the tropics, let’s briefly talk about the storms of today. This action is more prominent across central and eastern Kentucky. That’s where pockets of torrential rains will show up, possibly causing local issues.

Here are the Sunday storm trackers…

Tropical storm Marco is about to become Hurricane Marco as it heads toward a Monday landfall along the Louisiana coast…

Hurricane Warnings are out for this storm. Once it moves onshore, it’s likely to head west into Texas before dying out…

This clears the path for Tropical Storm Laura as it works across Cuba then into the Gulf of Mexico. Once into the Gulf, it’s going to become a hurricane and head toward Louisiana or the upper Texas coast late Wednesday. Here’s the official track from the National Hurricane Center…

Once this storm gets into the mid-Mississippi Valley, it’s going to take a hard right into Kentucky by the end of the week into the weekend. Just about every Hurricane Model brings the remnants across the state…

All the operational models not named the GFS agree with this path. Here’s the latest EURO…

Here’s the wind gust forecast from that run…

The rainfall numbers are impressive…

Those are pretty much in line with the Canadian and ICON…

As you can see, the current trend is for Laura to have a big impact on our weather late in the week into the weekend. That’s the current thinking, but it could obviously change depending on the track of the storm and how Marco behaves in front of it.

Deep fall troughs will then drop in here behind this setup as we head into early September. I mentioned a day or so ago that this September pattern is a far cry from the same time last year.

I will put out a map showing my thoughts on Laura with my overnight update. Until then, enjoy the rest of your day and take care.
