Good afternoon, everyone. A strong cold front is surging in from the northwest and sweeps across the state tonight and early Friday. This brings snow squalls and rounds of light snow in here through the weekend and into Monday. Overall, this continues to look like a very wintry weekend in our part of the world.

All of this is being pushed by two BIG TIME upper level systems diving in here from the northwest. Look at these twin spins…

Both of those give the atmosphere a serious kick in the pants, forcing the air to rise. This gives us snow squalls and those flat out periods of light snow.

A few quick thoughts:

  • A period of light rain and light snow follows the front late tonight across central and eastern Kentucky.
  • Some sun shows up briefly Friday, boosting temps close to 40 for some.
  • Instability then helps lead to snow squalls going up later in the afternoon and evening. These can pack a punch.
  • Rounds of light snow then build in Friday night and Saturday.
  • These rounds are likely to hang through Monday.
  • With so much rising air, there’s an outside chance for a rumble of thunder somewhere across the region.
  • This isn’t a major snow event by any means, but accumulations are a good bet.
  • The accumulations won’t come all at once, but most areas will pick up a few inches before all is said and done. Locally higher amounts, especially in the southeast will be possible.
  • This is a weekend just to blanket the state with a Winter Weather Advisory starting Friday evening through Monday.
  • I will have a First Call For Snowfall on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm. ❄💪

The models all agree on the above scenario playing out with only small differences in the snow numbers. Here’s the GFS on a regional scale and on the Kentucky scale through Monday…

Here’s the GFS Ensembles average snowfall through the same time…

Again, that’s not snow depth, but the actual total snowfall.

I will have another update later this evening, so check back. Until then, here are your radars to follow the front in from the west…

Make it a good one and take care.
