Good Thursday, everyone. It’s a very active weather day taking shape across Kentucky as a potent storm cranks up a severe weather event from the Ohio Valley into the deep south. This will bring waves of strong to severe storms into our region, with the greatest threat late today into the evening.
The latest Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center shows the increasing threat for severe storms. Much of the state is now in the Enhanced Risk with parts of southwestern Kentucky in the Moderate Risk…
Yes, that’s another HIGH RISK showing up to our southwest.
The potential is there for rotating thunderstorms to develop across western Kentucky late this afternoon and then quickly sweep eastward through the evening. The tornado risk is elevated in this type of a setup. Here’s the early day Tornado Risk area from the SPC…
A few strong tornadoes are possible in our region.
Damaging winds will also be a big time player through tonight. The SPC is highlighting this potential…
This is a big time wind maker regardless of thunderstorms. Gusts of 50mph-60mph will be possible across the state and region…
NAM Wind Gusts
Hi Res NAM Wind Gusts
You can clearly see how the Hi Res NAM is trying to pinpoint where the worst of the severe storms show up.
I will have updates later today. I leave you with your storm tracking toys…
Possible Watch Areas
Make it a good one and take care.
I knew that enhanced risk area was going to make its way into C. Ky. I wouldnt doubt it if that moderate risk makes its way in here before the evening is through.
With the trillions of dollars in satellites, computers and software, they still can’t predict much better than the old folks did without them. Instead of a definite forecast for a certain weather, forecast. especially from the NWS, is full of “possible”. Strong wind “possible, heavy rain “possible” localized flooding “possible” tornado’s “possible”. How about adding “earthquakes, volcano’s and an asteroid hit as “possible” ? Like you, I was just waiting for them to move the enhanced on eastward.
It’s forecast like this that really makes me wonder why I retired to an area that has the weather potential to destroy your home and property in less that fifteen minutes.
Hoping that we have a very cloudy day and we just get a good shower out of this system, less wind and return to the cool/dry pattern next week with no frost or freezes.
Tornadoes are possible in all 50 States. Sure they are more likely in some states than others, but there is no where you can live in this country that isn’t going to at least be possible to be free from some sort of weather risk that could destroy your home whether that being lightning, hail, tornadoes, earthquakes, flash flooding etc.
You are absolutely right Virgil there isn’t any place where one would be safe from all perils Mother Nature throws at us.
By the way Alaska and Hawaii have the fewest tornadoes, but I would think the high threat of Earthquakes would make it even.
As years go by I think Earthquakes will be a problem in our part of the country.
When I lived in Southwest Indiana we had many Earth trimmers over a 40 year period.
Dry slot moving in after a few showers in my area.
Sun is now coming into play and you all no what that means.
Stay safe everyone !
Know
After a rainy, cool morning, the sun is out and the heat and juice are rising. I’m concerned about the potential for big storms later this evening. I love a stormy night… as long as those storms aren’t dangerous.
Hoping we all stay safe as this day and night unfold.
Blessings from SE KY.
How long would the sun need to be out to make a difference enough for instability to go up? 1 hour? 2? Less than that? More?
I’m betting it won’t take long now that the sun angle is high. The things I watch for are temperature increases and humidity – both of which are increasing dramatically in Hazard. Doesn’t take much additional lift in the atmosphere when we already have unstable conditions like today. My little weather station is picking up on the low pressure and already showing storms on the display. It might be a long night.
Take care and stay safe!
A snow lover who is already missing winter.
I would rather have the Snow too.
❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️♥️❄️
At least until mid-April. My roses are all leaving out waaaay too early.
Just a cold, steady rain predicted for the Chicago area tonight, but with rapidly increasing winds from the NE. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Chicago area from 9 PM to 5 AM Friday, with gusts possibly reaching 50 MPH.
My goodness… it’s like we’re getting these 50+ MPH wind gusts once or twice a week this month!
Yep, they have a wind advisory out Southeastern Indiana.
We are in the dry slot at present.
Isolated tornadoes developing to our Southwest.
68 degrees here in Breck County, had 0.62 inches of rain earlier and warming up!
It only got to 64 at my home today in Burgin with no Sun. Praying it keeps the severe weather down some.
Tornadoes scare me to death!
