Good Friday evening gang. It has been a long day for your friendly weather dude and my apologies for just now getting around to an update. Without further ado… let’s get after it with a look at the headlines.
– The snow last night into early this morning had some punch to it. Several areas of northeastern Kentucky picked up a fresh 2″-3″ of the white stuff. It is a winter wonderland outside my house. ![]()
– What a temp gradient this afternoon and into the weekend. Highs today struggled to get to the freezing mark in the north and northeast as western and southern parts of the state were flirting with 50.
– Another big temp swing will carry us into the weekend as readings in the south and west head toward 50 and beyond as the north and east stay much cooler.
– A clipper will scoot by to the north on Saturday and MAY deliver a touch of flurries or some light snow in the north and some sprinkles elsewhere.
– Early next week will find a potent storm coming from the southwest for Tuesday and Wednesday. This storm has trouble written all over it for a lot of the country in the form of ice and snow. For us… it is about how strong and far north the low can get. Arctic high pressure will be located to our north and west and that needs to be watched in the coming days as it can send in low level cold temps… even with a storm cutting into the lower Ohio Valley. The GFS is hitting the potential for freezing rain pretty hard…
That’s the ice forecast from late Monday into early Wednesday and that would not be good for our northern counties. That is something for us to really keep an eye on in the coming days. You either want this storm to totally wrap up and head well into the Ohio Valley bringing us mainly rain… or for it to be very weak and head to our south bringing us snow. The in between scenario like many models are hinting at would put the northern half of the region in play for some ice.
I had a chance to talk to the fine folks at Kentucky Home Performance today in Versailles. We talked about the wicked winter in progress and some of the reasons we have been seeing the constant cold and snow. If you are not familiar with the program… give them a look…
I will have a full update coming later tonight so check back. Have a great Friday evening and take care.

THANKS CHRIS!
Yo quiero snow. No quiero hielo. It seems like everyone is pointing this into an ice event. My trees have not recovered from the last one.
This storm , has ice storm written all over it.
All rain Cent. Ky! No worries, If it shows freezing rain now in Northern Ky, it will only go north of that, it never seems to push south on these events.
No ice. Ice is not our friend.
I’m on the NO ICE train as well. Bring snow or bring rain, but I prefer my cake without icing.
As much as I would like a winter storm it should be all rain for most of KY. If you want heavy snow you better head north of I-70…
I think we all know that this storm isn’t on the grid yet. Who cares? We are in that 4-5 day range now where people want/need to know what’s going to happen. The GFS in particular is doing pretty good from this range. I have confidence that you can look at it’s solution today and get a good idea of what’s going on next Wednesday. This is going to be a big storm for a LOT of people. A BIG storm.
Disagree. The 2003 ice storm was supposed to be a non event for central KY until it started happening. Then the ice storm warning came out. We got what Cincy was supposed to get. Not liking this at all.
Thanks, Chris. Looks like somebody is going to see winter weather BIGTIME from this next one. I must say, I would really prefer rain to ice, as most of us would. I also say that, with all things being relative….this one will probably get us….with ice.
Hope not. IN the meantime, I am going to enjoy the sunshine a bit warmer temps tomorrow. Havea gREAT Friday night, all!
I live in the Flatwoods/Russell area just out of Ashland. All of my friends keep telling me I have to stop doing my snow dance. I said well I think they will want me to do the snow dance next week so that we get snow instead of that ICE. We got around 2 – 3 inches of snow last night on top of the snow we got Wed. It is beautiful out here with the snow on all of the trees. I agree with Chris it looks like a winter wonder land here. ready for snow but no ICE please.
Well, we can pretty much conclude snow is not happening, so the issue is how much cold rain and how much ice. My guess is folks north of I64 may want to keep an eye out. The more south of that, the more cold rain instead of ice….. I would say “I hope”, since in Richmond, but would not wish ice on anyone.
I just wanted to thank everyone who answered my question on the earlier post about getting out of school later in June. It is always nice to here another point of view… And the best part was that knowbody got all bent out of shape about my question…
I don’t want to wish anyone bad weather but I sure hope the next bad system stays well up North.
Thanks for all of your work–sorry about the shameless commercial plug….
I’m not disagreeing with that point but once in how many storms? If it’s suppose to snow in Lex area and mix in the south, it usually ends up mix in Lex area with rain and upper 30’s to low 40’s in temp in the south. Warm air always seems to win out. Bubba’s rule 33\32.
Will really be interested in the track of this low once it comes on shore. So many options on the table. 50 miles south all snow….50 miles north all rain. Ice in middle…Lou. area should be on the fence with this one…And the next one!!!!!
Still early in the ball game folks. Need to watch this one closely. It could go either way as we have seen in the past. I know Chris will keep us informed and up to date, so just need to listen to him.
Nickel & dime snowfalls & ice. The h@$$ with this winter
what about eastern ky? can we expect snow or rain from this?
no doubt its way to early to agree with what models are saying 😉
Good evening all.I took the time to read about Ky Home Perfomance,I might give them a call very interesting.Well if our choice is cold rain or Ice I will be glad this time to get cold rain.
My husband was at the car auction in Charleston Wv and he said from Williamson over they had snow and Charleston had 2-3 inches. Why can’t we in Pikeville share in oh well? I think the Snow Dome is moving here.
As of now, looks like mostly rain.. but things can and will change
LOL. Thats where I am from…About an hour straight North of Columbus, OH. Ive seen enough snow for 5 lifetimes…I have seen plenty of ice too, and ICE is crap. I will take cold rain ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!
Was hoping that someone like Bubba could shed some light. I live 10 minutes outside of Charleston and the early week system left about 2.5 inches at my house. Last nights left about 3.5. How is it that 15 to 20 minutes east of Charleston they got 11 inches and a state of emergency. Did 1 or 2 degrees do all of that.
thanks, i hope it does change i want some snow!!!
Ryanwx, if things were to change, could SE KY get a decent snow or would it be mainly light?
As always, Thanks for the Updates! Looking forward to seeing how this thing plays out. While I wold love to see a Major SNOW storm, if all this thing has in store for it is ICE and trouble, I hope it stays away.
Right now to my untrained eye looks like our friends in WV and virginia may be the unlucky ones for the most ice. Of Course things can change. This is my opinion only and im in no way a weather guru.
I live in Martinsville,IN, about 40 miles southwest of Indianapolis, (just south of I-70). Does it look like mainly a snow event here or should we get some ice as well??
Gotta to remember this storm will not hit the US grids until sometime late tomorrow by Sunday the models should have some general concensus on what might happen. Louisville and points north need to watch out for ice there is alot of moisture this storm will have to work with lots of rain ice and snow depending on where your at.
More snow than ice but subject to change either way you will have a good deal of frozen precip as it stands right now
Ok thanks! Hopefully no ice!
I finally cranked out an update on the ol’website. Its just been a really long day.
Lincoln, I like the dedication and it’s a nice site. Good luck.
It really depends on how far south we can get this low digging and how long we can stay below freezing, I think east ky could have a good snow if the low tracked more south than what current models are showing.. just hope for a big shift if you want snow.
I just moved here can anyone tell me what part Richmond ,kentucky is in.im thinking we are south but not sure
