Good Saturday to one and all. We have a clipper working into the region later Sunday and this kicks off another very busy winter weather period. It’s one that will feature two snow threats next week with shots of arctic air behind each of them.
Our Saturday is starting with temps in the single digits for many in central and eastern Kentucky but should recover nicely this afternoon and evening. Temps will be in the upper 20s and low 30s with a mix of sun and clouds.
A clipper drops through the region on Sunday and brings a stripe of light snow along and north of it. Much of that falls north of the Ohio River, but some light snows make it into northern and eastern Kentucky. I can’t rule out some light accumulations in those areas.
The Hi Res Nam shows this well…
The HRRR wants to dive this a little farther south into the state…
The short range Canadian isn’t quite as far south as that model, but it’s a closer than the NAM…
Regardless, this isn’t a very big deal at all.
Temps will drop back down behind this as we watch another system moving in for Tuesday. This can bring a little light snow to the region, but the threat for a bigger storm is no longer showing up on the models…
Temps continue to run much colder than normal and this shows no signs of going the other way through the end of the month and into early February.
The GFS Ensembles average temperature departure for the final week of January look like this…
The first week of February looks to have the cold reloading to our northwest…
This is also a pattern where the operational models will show large run to run variations in when it comes to potential snow makers. I’m essentially saying they won’t do very well in picking up on these. So, it might be better to take a look at the averages from the ensembles to get an idea of what may be ahead of us. These are certainly not mean to be taken verbatim, but the GFS Ensembles suggest many snow chances over the next 2 weeks…
I’ll throw you another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Sounds like plenty of cold but snow is still awol in WKY. RIP snow. Somebody bust the dome over WKY please!
Russell, I remember last February Western Kentucky had a decent amount of Snow with temperatures below zero. Maybe that will repeat this coming February and break that ” Snow Dome ? “
It’s the doldrums of Winter.
The coldest temperature so far this Winter has occurred in Maple at 3 degrees.
Hope you’re right Schroeder I always like to have at least one good one each winter. Been tough watching the east get them thus far.
Well…as crazy at it sounds I think this is the snowiest January in Lexington since I’ve lived here starting in Late 1996…All the snows I remember (not counting 1 to 3 inch events) have happened in Feb/Mar…December is kind of a blur to me.
