Winter Storm/Ice Storm ALERT

Good evening, folks. My time is limited but I wanted to stop by for a quick update on our winter storm and ice storm hitting the region Thursday and Friday. This will be a major hit in our part of the world.

A Winter Storm Warning is already out in the west with a Winter Storm Watch for much of the rest of the state…

Much of this will get upgraded a Winter Storm Warning and Ice Storm Warning later tonight. I would expect some additional counties to be added to this across the south with a likely Winter Weather Advisory for the rest.

This is a super messy storm loaded with moisture, so pinpointing totals of each precipitation type is a challenge. The placement is also a challenge, but here’s a First Call…

This will be a major impact in terms of freezing rain and we are likely to see, at least, some power outages…

The GFS has been the most consistent with this storm and the EURO seems to be trending closer to it of late. Here’s the late day GFS…

I will have the latest on WKYT News at 10pm on the CW Lexington and at 11 on WKYT. I leave you with your rain tracking tools for the evening…

Make it a good one and take care.

Still a watch here with NWS LOU. Wonder when that will be updated to a warning? Kids at school are going to be nuts thinking about the possibility of two ‘snow days’ this week?

Thanks Chris for the update. Doesn’t look good as we inch closer to an impending disaster. The rural areas affected will suffer the most as the power will likely fail like it always does with this weather type. It’s 2009 once again and nothing has been done since then to prevent power failures after Ice Storms occur and these types of Winter Storms are becoming more common here in Kentucky. If the Power Companies and other Communication Companies would please bury your lines and get rid of those ugly utility poles please.

Warren County seems to be maintaining an “outside looking in” posture, which is totally fine with me, although the hilly, northern reaches of the county may be facing significant icing. Flooding from 2 to 4 inches of rain falling on frozen ground is the biggest concern for central and southern areas of the county. But it’s looking pretty grim for the rest of the state. We’d better hope that there’s not a lot of wind with this storm, or a very bad situation could become disastrous. Years ago, there was an ice storm with wind where I used to live. So many trees and limbs came down that some power lines were cut in multiple places. Good luck everyone!
