Good Saturday and Happy Kentucky Derby Day. It’s not the best Derby Day in the bluegrass state as temps come in well below normal with a few showers scattered about the region. Hang tough, my friends, a little summer preview is on the way for the week ahead.
Low pressure continues to spin on top of us and it’s keeping low clouds and chilly May temps in place. Temps range from the 50s for the eastern half of the state to the mid and upper 60s in the west. Gusty showers will also show up across the eastern half of the state. While there is the chance for a shower or two at Churchill Downs, much of the action should stay just to the east.
Here are your radars to follow along…
Sunday starts chilly with readings in the 40s and ends with temps hitting the upper 60s to middle 70s. This brings us to an interesting pattern for next week and it’s one that will give us a taste of summer temps. Check out the ridge popping over us as a low cuts off along the southeast coast…
Yes, that’s the same system spinning over us today. The fact it slows down like that clogs up the pattern and lets temps really take off. Highs should be deep into the 80s for much of next week…
Western Kentucky may push 90 on a day or two.
By the end of the week, that upper level low starts to push back toward the west some…
This could bring the chance for a few showers and storms in here…
So, the same system hitting our region yesterday and today may impact our weather again in a week. It’s a crazy weather world we are living in.
Enjoy your Derby Day and take care.

The cold front that pushed South Central Kentucky on Friday afternoon quickly dropped temperatures. The mercury hit 78° at 3:30 pm, and 1 hour later it had dropped to 65°, but the frontal passage itself only produced 0.01″ of rain.
Upper level low moving from East to West not to unusual, but not that common. I guess high temperatures in the upper 80’s is about right since we are about to enter our Summer months.
Hopefully, we will have dry skies at Derby time and the race goes without much fanfare.
