Good Wednesday to one and all. It’s about time to sound the all aboard whistle on the Roscoe P. Coldtrain. This is the cold weather train inspired by the famous Dukes Of Hazzard character, Sherrif Roscoe P. Coltrane. The pattern shows the train leaving the station and should arrive here next week.
More on that in a bit. Let’s talk about what we have today and the improving weather ahead of us for the next several days.
Many areas picked up snow showers and some light snow Tuesday and some light snow and flurry action will hang tough early today in the east. If you are playing along at home… today makes the 9th fall day with snow falling somewhere across the state. Not too shabby!
Highs today range from 40 east to mid 40s west with a gusty wind adding to the chill. December looks to get off on a seasonal start with highs back into the 40s for Thursday and Friday under partly sunny skies.
The weekend will see temps bouncing up to near 50 for Saturday. This is ahead of a plains storm that should bring an increase in clouds and rain for us into Sunday. A shot of MUCH COLDER air will be filtering in behind the front that will slowly cross the region on Monday. This is when rain and snow will be possible and I still think we have to watch for a wave of low pressure developing along the front.
Check out the amount of cold air behind this bad boy…
That’s the European Model and all the other models look very similar. As I look at the 500mb pattern for early next week, it looks like one that can produce another major cutoff. This time with much colder air. Just something to think about.
The pattern is going to try to get true arctic air involved at some point over the next few weeks. Look at this blast of bitter from the European Model for the end of next week…
Brrrr!!! All aboard….
I will have another update later today. Have a wonderful Wednesday and take care.

looking to go to Texas somewhere around the 17th or so of dec, hope we have good weather on the way there. That’s probley when the big one will hit here at home, while i’m away.
This could be the year that we get that old school thumping like we havent had in years. we have had a few 3-5 inch snows in last 2 to 3 years, but its been since 1996 since i saw a snowfall that had 6 inches or better. not counting the dusting of 1998, it seems it was a 5 incher, but a heavy wet 5 incher here in clay. its hard to remember. does feb 2 1998 sound about right for this? thats what i have wrote on a old cassette tape i recorded from thh radio that night. the tape was giving 6-12 inches for knox county Tennesee. station was 103.5 WIMZ out of Knoxville. The only reason I was getting that station was the heavy snow knocked out the power to 103.1 k-love, and the signal didnt bleed over. i lived about a mile or so from k loves’ tramitter back then.
LOL!!!! Love the Duke’s of Hazard Chris!! Want a snow this year that you could lose Flash in 🙂
Just got a look at the 0z European and WOW. Talk about going to the extreme over the next few weeks. It does show my mega cutoff low idea early in the week and has our air at -10 to -15 at 850mb.
Shows the arctic air for the end of next week bringing -20c 850 air!!
The Roscoe P. Coldtrain is on the way.
Love the Dukes of Hazzard!…They had it made it Hazzard,Never saw it snow in Hazzard County! Thanks for the weather updates chris! Yeee-Hawwww
The actor who played Roscoe Coldtrain was James Best, who grew up in Muhlenberg County in western Kentucky! Good choice, Chris!
I stand to make $20 if it’s 20 degrees or below next weekend. (at night)
A friend is planning a big outdoor party and I told her it would be cold and she said no way, and we made the bet. So bring it on!!! 🙂
Sounds like the coldtrain is getting fired up and ready to roll. Now we just need to get the snowtrain fired up and were set.
Love the reference to the one and only! Nice CB!! Whitley Co. never got any snow!! :/ Take care everyone!!
I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!
that was herendous crash flash.
allright u dukes,

yep CB u the man, and DEC going be winter weather.
one more from ROSCOE
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE!!!!!
sopunds bout right ole buddy, u be safge on that rrip SW.
Arctic air does not get me fired up unless it comes with snow.
Yea, need the snow to go along with it. See my post above.
artic air will give u sadsnow u read my post last nite thread, u get clipper system backing up with 1-3 inches each time especially in eastern and SE ky and northern ghell just according how system moves. now u aint going get a bigg daddy unless as baily says a fron hangs up jus t to out est se and a low develops on it, then we have cold air in place and we get a OLD SCHOOL.
White Christmas odds are looking decent right now…
Sooo…does can that arctic outbreak trump that dadgum SE ridge? I hope it is powerful enough to get down to KY/TN country! That is some serious cold!
Wait? What? WXman predicting snow?
So wxman…what are your encouraging signs for the white Christmas?
12z euro would bring smiles to many on this site for the early to middle part of next week. I’m sure chris will tweet about it once he sees it! Still well within the timeframe for model waffles. Split flow patterns give everyone headaches but can provide fun and games. should be intresting to see what happens I would not have high confidence of anything next week till this weekend. Ice and snow would both be on the table.
AO/ NAO teleconnections are heading in the right direction by then.
Looks like the GFS is slowly coming around to what the euro is saying. Gonna be a fun next few days watching this.
James Spann said earlier this AM on his blog that the AO/NAO would spike positive…however, it seems that will be temporary/won’t last too long. I don’t mind a week of mild temps as long as it ain’t during Christmas week!
Btw…I live 1.5 hours from Jackson, TN. It was the thickest snow I’ve ever been in. 3″ where I traveled to. With each footprint, the snow stuck like glue! It was quite messy. For those who missed out, trust me, it wasn’t the best snow to be in. Too wet, pretty as it fell, but just too awkward walkin’ through it all. Better snows are the ones a comin’…
look like SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW nexyt week!!!
dont think we have a bad waffle but a good waffle as the cold air is going be in here, only way no snow no SYSTEM.
but way i read things we could see not a MONSTER but biggest snow this early in season than we seen in looong time.
and agree with WXMAN and mitch XMAS looking good right now as i said it would few days ago, but when the real wethaer guys that i just mention along with THE LEGEND say it it up my metter to a 6 out of 10 right now for WHITE XMAS.
as far as next week goes I GURANTEE Sa ok SNOWFALL for most of the area.
Chris will update before he goes on air tonite about latest models.
rolo you go back and forth so much lol rolocoaster? haha didnt you say that 1-3 was the most we would be seeing most of the times?
Hey it actually looks good but its a week out and I have been burned too many times to get my hopes up although when this comes from Rolo, it has to mean something let alone WXman, but was he talking about next week or Christmas because it sounded like Christmas to me. I’m anxious to hear what Chris has to say tonight…..I don’t think I’m in the mood for waffles at all next week! Looks like the old regulars are back :))
tommy when i go back sand forth u dummy,
yea i said alot of this winnter be cold air on back side with the clippers lining up and the path would tell the tell but that it be like last year 1-3 possible with each clipper,
now how saying next week look like a ok snowfall flip flopping, 4 or 5 inches is a ok snowfall last time i check around here, never said old school, monster etc. oh and i been saying white XMAS for 2 weeks.
so i sorry for the dummy comment but your comment has no basis on my weather comments so far this fal;l on winter.
i said a good waffle meaning it would be a change to a rain maker next week as deep cold air in place, i said biggesat snow this early compared to last several years, that means 4 or 5 inches with 1 SYSTEM be sizable and as u know that happen there be isolated spots with more.
haha i love you rolo, and i would pay alot for some of your moonshine 🙂
Well, this December is certainly not going to be a December like last year. 26.4 degree average temp, 10.25 inches of snow, no temps. past the 40s until the last day of the month… last December was brutal. This December looks somewhat average to me…but with a snow near Christmas.
dec 1989 dec 2000 dec 2010…looks like every ten yrs december is very cold, how high would the odds be for two of any of the three above be to occur back to back?
Looks fun…
