Good Friday, everyone. Snow is winding down as some of the coldest air you’re ever going to find blows into the region. Wind chills are in the life-threatening category today and will stay there into the Christmas weekend.
Last night’s weather was every bit as harsh as advertised. Take a look and listen to the blizzard conditions that hit the region…

As the heavy band of snow pulls out of eastern Kentucky early this morning, the focus for flakes then turns to snow showers and squalls that will be out there from time to time today through Saturday. Those can put down accumulations from time to time and can also reduce visibility. With gusty winds continuing, blowing snow will still be a problem. Roads are a mess and will stay that way.
Temps this morning are well below zero to start and may flirt with record lows. Actual thermometer readings of -10 may very well show up. Winds will be gusty making it feel -30 or so and that’s incredible. Dangerously low wind chills will be with us all day and through Christmas morning…
Please take this kind of cold seriously and stay inside. The next chance for snow comes our way by Monday and Tuesday as a clipper drops in with what should be another accumulating snow…
I will have updates later today. Until then, I have you all set to track this harsh winter blast…
Have a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris, please get some rest now. Merry Christmas!
that just about does it, dont it. by vern
Thanks Chris for all your hard work. I appreciate you posting the videos on this Blizzard. Congratulations on your Bold predictions for a Blizzard this year !
Here in Maple according to the Ventusky we received 3 inches of Snow. The temperature right now here in Maple is -9 degrees with horrendous winds.
Stay warm and safe everyone, because we want you around to shovel Snow next year. Chris, please gets that much needed rest that you deserve !
Chris –
-7 here in Lexington…wind chill -30
Pure craziness
I was reading through tweets and some lady from Lexington said this reminded her of 1985 Jan where the wind chill was in the -60s…. holy crap…
I know looking through records there have been several occasions where Lexington remained below zero for daytime high temps
The NWS updated the wind chill formula in the early 2000s so that it isn’t as harsh as the old formula was. Under the old formula, these wind chills would be in the -60 degree range also.
Chris you got your bold prediction. It finally crashed in here with one of the worst winds I had heard especially for winter. Get some rest but I know you won’t lol.
Looks like about two inches in north Richmond, based on the mini drifts. We got some strong snow periods, but was mostly done by 2AM. Unless something happens today, lost my beer bet of 3″ to 5″. Boo!
Power is out, too, which sucks.
Thanks Chris for all of your tireless work (though I know you’ve GOT to be tired!) but hitting your bold prediction on the first full day of Winter has got to feel sweet. We picked up about 2″ in BG. It’s -4° right now. Overnight the wind chill hit -29°!
Hope all that has loss power is short one. Stay warm and be safe
It better be a short outage or I would freeze to death. Coldest I’ve experience here in Kentucky. Will be glad when El Nino brings his Snows. Their much warmer and deeper.
WKY got in on the action last night, I have an hour drive from work to home wasn’t too bad until I got to Possum Trot. Then it hit blowing across the work and fierce wind. This morning Paducah was actual temp -4. Hope there is more snow in our future this winter.
I hope the next Snow is wetter and deeper so the Kids can make Snowmen and Snow forts as I did when I was a Kid.
At 10:30 PM local time, it’s currently -6 with a wind chill of -31 at the NWS Forecast office 35 miles SW of Chicago. The low this morning was -9, with the coldest wind chill at -38.
A total of 2.5 inches of snow fell at the NWS Forecast Office yesterday, while 1.3 inches accumulated at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, which was a far cry from the outrageous 20+ inches of snow that was being predicted by the computer models earlier in the week.
The computer models did a great job predicting this extreme cold well in advance, but not so well on predicting the snowfall accumulations from several days out. Even yesterday 3 to 5 inches of snow was being predicted for the Chicago area, but this was just a 1 to 3 inch snowfall. But with the light fluffy snow being blown around by the strong winds, travel is pretty rough.
