Good afternoon, everyone. Rounds of light snow continue to push across the region as we start to focus on a pattern change. This flip of the pattern means we have milder air and a lot of rain on the way.
Today’s snow system has been much more blotchy than I thought. Local 1″ snow amounts have been reported and we may still add too that in some spots through tonight, but this is an underachiever. Areas getting in on the snows are seeing another light accumulation on roads, so keep that in mind if you’re traveling.
Here are your radars for the rest of the day…
Don’t forget to go to our weathercams page to watch the snow fly at different locations across the state: Weathercams
Milder winds kick in for the middle and end of the week as we get set for a series of storm systems to roll in from the southwest. This setup means a lot of rain is likely to fall around here from New Year’s weekend into the first few days of 2023.
Here’s the GFS showing the active storm track…
The Canadian is similar…
The rainfall maps from both models show the potential for quite a bit of rain to fall over a 5 day period…
Once we get into the second week of January, we should start to see another big flip back to winter. The signal has been there for a bit and continues to show up strongly…
I’ll stop by for another update later this evening. Enjoy the rest of your Monday and take care.
I hope we don’t get high water issues. Thanks for the weather cams Chris they are very clear. That sure looks like a lot of rain coming.
All of that rain on top of frozen ground could translate into a LOT of runoff, at least initially. We’ll need to watch out for flash flooding.
That middle of January cold snap got a big endorsement from AES climatologist Judah Cohen, who says that a “stretched Polar Vortex incursion is a very real possibility. I also read that 58% of the country experienced a White Christmas this year. That’s the second highest percentage in NOAA’s records, only exceeded by the 63% coverage in 2009!
We ended up with about an inch of new Snow here in Maple. Just enough to refresh the Snow from this past Friday. Looks beautiful around the trees and cabin. I’m looking forward to the warm up, but with a thaw, so the rains that fall will soak into the soil rather than run off and cause high water issues around creeks and rivers. Most creeks and rivers are low, so this may not be an issue.
