Good Tuesday afternoon, everyone. A winter storm continues to impact our weather with rain this afternoon. That will change this evening and overnight as cold air wraps into the state. Snow will break out and should become heavy at times into early Wednesday.
Wraparound snows will fall across much of central and eastern Kentucky during this time. The heaviest will be across parts of central and northern Kentucky, where several inches of snow will be possible. Here’s a look at my latest snowfall map…
Far northern parts of the state are in the 3″-6″ range. The Lexington metro west toward Louisville could receive up to 4″ of wet snow. Areas farther south and east are in the 1″-2″ range with locally higher amounts in the highest elevations of the southeast. A few spots in northeastern Kentucky may have a hard time realizing those totals as a mix may linger into the overnight.
A WINTER STORM WARNING is out for far northern Kentucky. Most of the rest of the area is under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY…
I will have updates as needed. Have a great day and take care.
Thanks, Chris. Although I am in spring mode or getting there, I hope we get even the 1-2 predicted. Would love to see some on the ground other than in pictures.;)
Seriously?…Once again, check out the bubble over Kenova/Ashland area. Mother Nature hates us!
Well if this is what we have to put up with to go ahead and get spring on in here then so be it but after this I just want it to be spring.
Looking at radar back edge of precip around Paducah area, if this is the moisture for the snow tonight the cold air better come in quick or it will arrive to late for a significant accumulation ??
Snow will becoming in from the north and the west all night tonight and tomorrow morning from the back side of the storm system.
In light of Kentucky having a statewide tornado drill today, here’s an interesting ‘old school’ storm preparedness clip from the 1950s!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1tId6-pjQM
Keep in mind some of the safety advise in the clip is long obsolete, such as you opening doors/window (if a tornado wants to open a window/door, it will have absolutely no problem doing so 🙂 ) and going to the southwest corner of the basement.
This has the feel of a “surprise.”
Only thing that will suprise me is the rainfall totals right now my yard is swimming also if we get snow that will be suprising as well 😉
yea, like ‘surprise’, it didn’t snow
or like ‘surprise’, I didn’t get the 1″ I was supposed to
or like hey, ‘surprise’ the snow didn’t come but looking at ‘next week’ ……..
even it does snow, it’s going to be gone by noon tomorrow, temps creeping back to almost 40
Hope that snowfall map verifies…it appears to mirror the thinking of the NWS in the Ohio River counties.
The NWS predicted show accumulations (in case anyone’s wondering)

*SNOW
Accuweather is calling for a big storm for the middle of next week. They are calling for heavy snow for Louisville and east.
You’re just making that up about the next week part. 😉
All No.
So in other words what Accucrack is saying is if it snow’s it will either go east, west, north or south of ky….Correct….
Hey, I just posted what was on their website. They usually can’t even get the temps right, so how are they calling for a storm a week out!
I can’t find this on accuwx, where is it?
Once the storm reaches the Ohio Valley next Monday night into Tuesday, it will pick up steam and gather moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. The intensity of snow is expected to increase as a result.
Cities in the path of moderate to heavy snow as the storm ramps up include St. Louis, Louisville and Cincinnati. Flight delays and cancellations due to snow are possible in this zone.
Heavy snow may slow travel along portions of I-44, I-64, I-70 and I-75. It is not out of the question that snow makes it far enough south to cause some issues along I-40 as well.
Joie, the story is on the third page of stories. Just go to the bottom of the page and click on more news and it will take you to the story.
Thanks!
This is for the storm that is currently taking place. Not next week. View the dates of the videos and blogs. The core of this strom has moved 100 miles to the North since this ACCUCRACK forecast was put out. I read it last week…..
bgenks, how about reading what they are saying. It’s not hard. It says ” late Monday night into Tuesday. Today is Tuesday. The story was posted on the 3rd. I’m not saying they are correct because most of the time their wrong, but what I put on is for next week.
1-2ft+…. Oh boy.
If it ever come’s another ice age i guarantee everybody will be loading up and heading to Ky to get inside the Dome…Of course people in Ky will be heading the other way to go see this mythical thing they call snow…Such a wonderment thing it must be…
Head on over to my facebook group to see the new Euro snowmap!!
http://www.facebook.com/groups/317467170853/
u see the storm startin to wrap round the mositure, backside showing snow, now it a race for cold air catch up to the mopisdture
todays song,, RACE IS ON by the possum

BAILEY need knew up after u see EURO
Looks like the ride is on 🙂 One side of me wants it to snow and the other wants a let down so we get the full Rolocoaster 🙂
Snow will have to fall heavy to offset the ground temperature, since will melt any moderate or less action.
Hey Rolo can you post the euro, has a nice ring to it, just like a storm named Saturn 😉
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10200885607046440&set=o.317467170853&type=1&theater
Thanks
be hard pressed to get any snow to stick to 2 inches + of rain water
Hows the salt holding out down there?
The 2+ of rain we have had has washed the salt off ball was dropped for flooding rains on the TN KY border
Hwy 225 and 3442 are covered in Knox County
Let Rolo climb!
Tyler can you post it somewhere other than fb, I am at work 🙁 and my company has fb blocked.
Wondering if we will once again be missed or will we get that 1/4″ of past snows. How I would love to see a good 2″er LOL Better than a 1/4″ at a time.
Chatting in chatroom. Come on over and lets talk snow.
http://weatherforkentucky.chatango.com/
yea go to tyler page there on facebook he great and reading and posting latest model runs.
NWS not upping their totals, so the Latest Euro must be something they are not taking serious!
What are the totals being dialed up by the EURO model Todd?
6 to 9 inches from Louisville to Lexington north!
3 to 6 most areas south of 64
Seems the models do not factor in the well above freezing ground and water standing in a lot of areas. Not seeing this being much for most folks unless HEAVY snow to build a base and then allow cooling.
The one saving grace would be Rolocoaster posts. 🙂 Priceless.
that are they are thinking its gonna be hard pressed to get that much snow on all the standing water
Euro has been the winner the entire winter….Lou area will be lucky to see and inch out of this as it will go the way of the GFS…..Just don’t see it happening.
I am so ready for spring and storms…
http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/Image.php?model=nam&area=namer¶m=850_temp_mslp_precip&cycle=18&image=nam%2F18%2Fnam_namer_009_850_temp_mslp_precip.gif
someone better start taking something seriously as the NEW NAM is also going toward a EURO solution. Follow the link
The storm IS strengthening.
I really want to believe something big (snow wise) will come from this but I just can ‘t seem to muster up much optimism. I’m gonna haveto see it before I believe it this time.
Western Kentucky and rain again. no snow. No hope for snow. I say let’s have spring. In Hoptown, we have had two 1-inch snowfalls for the past two winters.
Same totals last two years here in Bowling Green as well. It seems so much worse because we were spoiled with 22″ three winters ago…
Temps have crashed 9 degrees in one hour here in Valley Station near Louisville (46 to 37). Large flakes have begun flying here during the past few minutes.
Its been snowing for about an hour down here in the E-Town area. Despite it coming down hard (visibility less than 1/2 mile), the warm/wet ground really is keeping from accumulating. A dusting to a quarter of an inch at best with nothing on the roads. Better chances tonight with the upper low. Still believe the best snow will be across northern KY north of I-64.
Ditto. I am biased for you, since I have said the same thing for two days 😉 Seems the temperature correlation with the moisture favors such a track and for folks on north from there.
My fellow bloggers to get one more football kick in before winter ends. I am torn with both empathy and a sick sense of comedy. Not at them, but more the situation and its apparent consistency.
In spite of two years of snow kills, warm air is like Rodney Dangerfield and gets no respect. Underestimated.
Snowing biggest flakes I have ever seen here in Lou. To bad it is getting ready to stop.
OK try again to post—- crazy snow in north Etown!
There is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. æ
Welp — last year’s 5 inch snowfall came on March 5th… can we go for March 6th this year!? I’ll take even just a few inches at this point – enough for a snow day for this teacher would be nice 🙂 We’ll still get out well before June!
Weather forecast for tonight: Dark. æ
Local schools called off school tomorrow so they could support Madison Central at Rupp tomorrow. Ironic their one few chances of a snow day.
BTW, I do not recall the 40 mph wind gusts being part of the forecast…
Hmmm, a similar set-up to the dusting of 98. Heavy rain and then unexpected high winds and a sudden temp drop. Difference here is the wind is from the west and that was from the east.
Not expecting a big event, but did not expect the wind, either. Wild.
Weird. I was out at Kroger in Richmond at 6:30 and it was all rain, by 6:45 – heavy wind driven snow and no rain at all. We skipped the mix completely. Weird. Heavy for an hour and now nothing… Weird. We’ll see what the night brings…
Or flooding rains
Wet snow flakes mixed with the rain in Somerset from about 5:45 or so, temp from close to 50 at 4:15 to 37 now
Would love to know what the wind gusts are in Mercer county. Crazy! Also, thinking the storm is going to overachieve. Too bad the ground is soaked to dampen accumulation?
Where is the overnight snow coming from? I don’t see anything to our west…
The storm is wrapping around the backside — there’s more precipitation building at the back than there appears to be. It will likely snow off and on all night long for many areas in central and northern ky.
thanks for explaining!
snow going be from LEX NEwrap around not going reach much farther than I 64 CORRIDOR FOLKS.
And the rolocoaster starts its downward spiral
dance all my blog following friends!! this pre-school teaching momma wants a snow day for her birthday tomorrow!!
Now snowing over on the north side of lexington
Heavy snow in Frankfort temp down to 32!
I love how the mood changes hourly on here
Nothing to see but water here
Saltwater
Snowcane in progress here at Tates Creek and New Circle in Lexington.
The wind was blowing like crazy here in Richmond a few minutes ago, but seems to have slowed down a little-at least for the moment. Precipitation outside appears to be mostly snow.
Windy and mainly rain in north Richmond, but mixed with some sleet now.
Moderate windy blowing snow now.
Testing
I walk outside in west Lexington and its cold rain, go back inside for about 30 sec. to a min. and heavy snow!!!!!!!!!
Sadieville; Wind, snow, dark and locusts I think.
A tease as the snow starts the moisture moves just to far north and east as it wrapping up quick, RICHMOND north and north east going get 5 plus inches folks, sopme areas N and NE upwards of 10 inches.
it look great for u all, us in S/SE KY going be bout 70 miles away from decent snow as the storm really wrapping up and getting stroger as it slow moves and will transfer to the eastern low.
ohh wellANDY ROSE,COFFEE LADY we can watch web cams.
if you wanna watch webcams go ahead brother LoL
no im happy for my brothers north of me, this going be some the HEAVIEST SNOW falling u seen in YEARS overnite!!!!
if ur in the prcip shield right now ur going get the snow, south of precip now ur POOP OUT of luck enjoy my central and EAST/NE brothers.
im going top bed.
It is absolutely beautiful in Lexington right now! Snowing pouring down and sticking fast — not on the roads yet, but it looks like it will eventually as the sidewalk was getting a bit slick!
Ground completely covered in Lexington around the airport. Coming down heavily now.
My yard is solid white… Remarkable how hard it’s snowing….
Mine is solid brown from tha mud
Perhaps frosted oatmeal cookie white, but not solid white. What part of Richmond you in?
Bunch of wind here, but not much snow falling.
How far Northeast we looking? Think Carter/Boyd County Kentucky will get much? cities Ashland, Grayson..
looks like the wraparound is starting around Louisville, maybe a half inch in Frankfort, light snow falling temp 32!
The good thing about all the rain is it washed all the salt build up off the roads 😉
I was outside at about 6:15 or so and I heard this awful sound. I first thought it was a jet coming in, but it was the wind. I don’t believe I have ever heard wind like that before. It was coming out of the northwest and the trees were really moving. Right now it looks like a blizzard here in Irvine. That’s one thing about Kentucky – change. If you don’t like the weather just give it a few minutes, it’ll change! Thanks, Chris, for all your hard work!
here in somerset still rain i dont see much snow comeing this way honestly but one big snow would be nice bring on spring instead of this dark depressing rainy winter but hey weather unpredictable in ky.
Everyone come to the Kentucky weather chatroom and talk about what were experiencing.
http://weatherforkentucky.chatango.com/
Well, we got a nice coating before getting dry-slotted in South Jessamine…I hope there’s a lot more to come – I’m tired of getting the short end of the stick!
He it comes west of Louisville,it is no other than our ole friend the dry slot. Please do not over stay your visit.
Chris said there would be a lull. i.e–dry slot–between 8:00 and 10:00.
Was watching the snow fall for a while, here in Louisville late this afternoon/evening. Very pretty. Whatever comes, over night will be a nice surprise.
Down to 31 in Frankfort, Light snow falling, wind is crazy, a band of snow developing NWest of here, how about a late season overachiever?
Crazy wind in Greenup County- local station says 17 mph but it feels way more windy than that. Just went to take the dogs out and could hear it even before I opened the door.
Nws uped the totals in Lex to 3-5″
Wouldn’t they issue a winter storm warning for that?
Where did you even get that? I’ve researched the entire NWS website and they have no reference to 3-5 inches….
Where are u getting that information from. Certainly not from the NWS website, because nothing has changed on their website in regards to totals…
We have no power here in Shelbyville and I just measured an inch of snow on the back deck.
Started snowing in Boyd co ab 10 min or so ago. Wind is INSANE. I love that my weather channel app still shows it as 45 and rainy.
Am I the only one here more excited about temps in the 60’s this weekend? SPRING!!!
4 or 5 inches of snow sounds like more fun!
Yeah but the only places in Kentucky with a “real” chance of that is Newport/Covington. The majority of us will have a nuisance dusting at best.
The rain here in Paintsville is changing over to snow. Brrrrr it is getting colder. Chris thank you for everything you do to keep us posted. I do a lot of traveling in my job. I always every morning and evening read your forecast. Thank you for a wonderful job. Can’t wait for spring to hurry up and bring warmer days.
Just saw a map of 6-8 in Pikeville for the forecast is this true
starting back up in south Fayette just north of the river. and by the looks of the radar, it will keep it up for a while!
the rain is quickly turning to snow here in rural greenup county..the wind is ferocious!!!!!
Come to the weather chatroom to talk about weather and what’s happening in your neighborhood.
http://weatherforkentucky.chatango.com/
Looks like the best band of snow right Now is sinking to the southwest of Louisville, to many dry slots showing up in Ncentral KY, need these to fill in soon ??
With the latest update from the NWS they seemed to want to lower their forecasted totals, but did not. Just looking at the radar Ohio is the winner and we are not.
This snow isn’t falling like it looks on radar, to light, if 2-4 inches is coming to Frankfort it better get busy??
NWS dropped LEX to 2″, they didn’t up it to 3-5″. More wind, more dry, less snow.
On and off periods of moderate snow in Nashville area this evening. I’m not much of a winter person, but guess I don’t mind so much this time since it’s been such a warm and relatively snowless winter – and we will hit the 60s by this weekend. But it is very windy this evening thus making for some harsh wind chills.
As usual, the higher elevations of the Plateau (Crossville TN, Cookeville TN, etc) will get the brunt of the accumulations.
Nashville got 0.3 inch a few mornings ago, raising the current seasonal snow total to a whopping 1.3 (Bowling Green KY is now up to 2.7 inches). Will be interesting to see if mid-March can add to these meager totals as Chris Bailey hinted is a possibility. Thanks CB for your tireless efforts, I’m watching you now via WKYT livestream (and at same time your colleague Ron Howes on Nashville’s WTVF, how’s that for a dedicated if somewhat warped weather weenie?!).
Looks like a underachiever, Oh well warm weekend sounds good!
snowing hard in lewis co. Only thing disturbed is my satellite signal. Dang this country cable.
BUST!
