Good Thursday afternoon. I often talk about how you know we’re in a good winter pattern when it snows during the smallest of opportunities. Today is one of those days as snow showers cranked out light accumulations across much of the state. Temps are struggling to get out of the 20s and temps may challenge records for coldest high readings ever recorded on this date.
My attention continues to be focused on a late weekend winter storm that looks to impact our region. As a matter of fact… we may upgrade to a Winter Storm Threat by tonight. The clear trend on the models is for a colder solution on Sunday and Sunday night as a storm rolls just to our south and east. A swath of heavy snow is likely along and north of the track of the storm.
The NAM is putting a smackdown on parts of the state…
The GFS has been very similar of late in showing heavy snow across the northern half of the state Sunday and Sunday night.
Wraparound snows would then work across the region into early Monday as snow showers start to take over. Think about this… it may snow each day next week.
Yay, spring!
Enjoy the rest of your day and take care.
That would be a great birthday weekend for me!!!!!!! :o)
Well I must not be in the part of the state that gets snow bright sun and cold wind is all we have in Knox County atm
Partly cloudy, very cold and windy here, too, Andy. Even when its March, we cant seem to get snow! 😉
Well NAM, I wish it would warm up!
Chris, please tell the snow to STAY north. But warmer temps can stay down in southern KY with the cold rain. From looking at your map, my part of the state only looks to pick up a couple of inches, if that map were to hold true. So, that probably means a cold rain. 😉
thanks for the update. At least this might be a dome buster for some in the state.
True march madness, the nam shows 8 to 12 inches of snow for Frankfort area????
Yup 10-14 inches in Louisville not going to happen temps will be a touch above freezing but a solid maybe 3-6 inch snows for north central Ky. Most accumulation will happen Sunday night. AS OF NOW. It’s all subject to change.
I live in Scott co. Looks good for me
The rock says there is no way.. and the rock means no way, that any dnow is gonna be in southern ky this weekend. Old man winter, you wanna csll all the shots, like you are the great one.. like the rock.. let the rock say. this.. cold 33 rain is what southern ky gets. You can take all that snow.. send up north of ohio river, let warm gulf air invade.. and smell what spring has cookin.
Really don’t want any snow chris, but lf mother nature wants to give us snow we might as. well accept it.
Watch wrestling much? Really!?!
Stupid phone hit send before I was done. When severe weather and warm air finally gets here, I’m afraid we are in for a really active severe weather season. We gonna be battleground for warm/cold air. Jan and feb I would be excited to see snow. But not almost april. One of ur biggest snows fell in april 1987 here in clay co, we had over a foot of snow with that system. Maybe close to 2 feet. I’m sure rolo remembers how much our area got back then.
Looks like the same folks who got in on the action last week are in line for it again. Hope it trends a bit south, ‘cuz that’s not showing much for south Jessamine!
NWS saying maybe 2-4 inch mostly in Indiana, be careful with this one it might bite??
Great… It’s track season and we might see a foot of snow…. I am so done with this cold weather.
Looks like if it pans out, another north I64 favored event…… Even the funky spring events are missing most of us. Even those in the past have been more south. The irony is areas to our west and a lot farther south have been getting thumped over the past few winters.
It was in the 80’s this time last year!!! I am SO ready for spring. My fresh-cut daffodils look so pretty on my kitchen table. Good grief!!
Chris made a funny LoL snow and 6 inches
Wow. Hope this happens exactly the way the shows. The metro will shut down. Too much fun!! Get the sleds.
the way the map shows. Sorry. The mere mention of more than 3 inches of snow causes a brief period of euphoria. And then BAM..back to reality.
For God’s sake…..it’s almost April and now winter decides to finally arrive…. Please, someone, tie me a noose. ugh!!!!!!!!
The snowiest March day ever in Lexington was on March 27th, 1947, with 9.5 inches. Temp fell to 1 Above the next morning. For Louisville, it was March 22nd, 1968, with 12.0 inches.
It has happened before, maybe it is going to happen again!
Looks like IF this event mixes with the moisture and cold air to create a thumper, it will actually pull more south and the event might be about least 50 miles more due south east than listed above. Just my thoughts and the big IF is if it pans out. Pans around here are like spaghetti strainers 😉
Please you know thats not gonna happen LoL
I agree. North central KY and us usually l-64 corridor southern indiana looks to get the brunt if this developing storm shifts by 50 miles to the south Louisville Frankfort Lexington will have the bullseye
How does this winter storm affect the southeastern part of KY?! I want some snow if its gonna be cold haha. Please bring some good or better news about snowfall in the McCreary county area?! Lol
While at this time it looks you may only get a glancing blow, it’s still early; the models can and often do change.
You will be too far north for tonight’s system. Northern Arkansas is getting good snow now, Winter Storm Warnings in effect. Western Tennessee (including Memphis) and northern Alabama (including Huntsville) are next. Trace snow/sleet may fall as far south as Macon Georgia. And here it is getting into late March 😉
The same thing that happened with all the other “winter”storms we have had heavy rains folllowed by a few flurries if we are lucky
I would love for the above scenrio to work out !!! I live in southwestern jefferson county and it puts us right in 12 plus inches !!! I really pray that would work out atleast for my baby girl who is 3 and never seen snow in that quanity.
IF this storm pans out and doesn’t fizzle out some places in northern KY could approach 18 inches of Snow in a little more than a week in March!
The storm is still out in the Pacific so no ground-base measurement has been taken and once they do over the next 24 hours, the model WILL shift north, south, east, or west. Now if the NAM shows the same tomorrow when the storm is on the continent, BE AWARE!
18z nam 18z gfs says snowstorm for ky especially north central ky 10+ inches of snow for north central ky
I won’t believe any of it. In 8 years any model that showed anything more than 4 inches of snow for my part of Richmond has been wrong.
So, if the models shift south, and puts us for 4 inches or more — Not Going to Happen, you heard it here first.
If the models DON’T shift – and stay to the north, we are in for a chance.
The Maginot line of the KY river has yet to be breached from the north, perhaps the forces of winter will have to go around. (It has happened before – ask the French!)
It appears that the track of the low is a lock. It now comes down to will there be enough cold air. As usual Louisville will be on the edge. Has anybody seen any 12z runs?
Latest models seem to be shifting north again, with mostly a cold rain ending as snow, GO AWAY UGLY WEATHER!
test
The NAM has now shifted 100 miles north meaning a lot less snow and no significancation in snow. (Except still for s. Ind and Ohio)
Some things never change, DOME
