Good Thursday everyone. It’s another soaking rain working across the state today as a strong cold front slowly works in from the west. This front ushers in much colder air for the next several days and even has the hint of some winter with it. What about week leading up to Christmas? I have you covered with the possibilities.
Our short term forecast is all about rain, rain and more rain. Many areas will pick up more than one inch of water today and you may even hear some thunder. Say what? Yep… a clap of thunder is possible as this front works in.
Let’s track the rain…
Rainfall Since Midnight
Temps today will hang into the mid and upper 50s as winds really begin to crank up. The front swings in overnight and our temps take a big tumble of 20 degrees in just a few hours. Readings will be in the mid and high 30s by morning.
The cold front stalls out just to our south as a wave of low pressure works along it. This will throw more clouds and light rain back in here on Friday and several models show the air being just cold enough for a few flakes to mix in later in the day and early evening. The GFS Ensembles is in this camp…
Highs won’t stray too far from either side of 40. You will also notice a VERY weak system across the upper midwest. A few runs show this bringing some snow flurries into town Saturday night or Sunday morning… especially north and east.
The models are all looking different with how they handle the storm coming out Tuesday and Wednesday.
– GFS Ensembles are not impressed with it at all and have a weak system rolling through.
– GFS brings overrunning snows in here Monday night before a change to rain with the low tracking over our heads Tuesday.
– The Canadian and European Models take a storm just to our west with rain Tuesday and a nice shot of cold and some snow for Wednesday.
I will focus more on that over the next few days.
The models are actually in much better agreement on the end of next week into Christmas Weekend. Believe it or not… most show a cold and possibly snowy pattern. The GFS Ensembles have been all over this for a while…
The Canadian Model strongly agrees…
Hmmmmm… that’s a very interesting look. Let’s see if it holds.
Have a great Thursday and take care.

Surely I am not first???? Looks interesting heading into X-Mas….As I said before…I will be traveling south after X-Mas and I am sure that is when we will get hit with snow. Just my luck. Thanks and have a good wet Day.
this whole system is a little strange. its raining in the UP of Michigan in mid December 😉 can’t really say I have seen a system like that before, mild on all sides and even for areas that usually this time of year are in deep freeze and allready in the heart of their winter.
VERY interesting!
Fingers crossed Chris! I could really use a White Christmas after the year I have had. 🙂
I need a snow like April of 1987…that was a SNOW. We were heading out on our Senior trip and had at least 2 feet of snow on the ground (higher with drifts)…Those were the days!!!
ahhh… I remember that storm very well. heavy wet snow in April. we always refer to that storm in our family as the Easter storm of 87′..
It will snow…but right now, and until I see things change, its going to be rain (AND WE ALL HATE RAIN IN WINTER!!!!!!)
Hope springs eternal! Not much rain here so far today. Some off and on showers. Temps are holding at about 58-59 degrees. Going to need the heavier clothes tomorrow, it sounds like.
thanks, Chris!
the 87 storm i remember well as CLAY COUNTY won ATATE TITLE and we went toplay MARION COUNTY INDIANA and there was 23 inches in my backyard whwen we left gunchester.
that was OLD SCHOOL.

What I remember was the intense heat and drought of summer. Never have seen the ground crack like it did during that summer.
Yep, officially, LEX recorded 5.8″ of snow during the first week of April. By mid-month it was in the 70s. By the end of the month, it was in the mid-80s! Very wild April for sure in ’87.
here’s a recap of the white Christmas o
f 2010..it sure was nice!!

Well if you’re into the long range was reading elsewhere the Euro monthlies are out today and the 850mb temp anomaly charts are warm all the way through the end of June….Oh winter, why have you forsaken us????
here is what we got to do.. we do this everyyear… everyone needs to on a certain day and time needs to turn on AC and open freezer and open the front door to get the cold a jump start
someone needs to set a date and time and i will do it
WOW! the 12z has the pre-Christmas storm back for friday the 23rd..it actually shows 6-10″ of snow for west and northern ky…1-3″ east ky…but just yesterday it showed the tidewater of Va. getting 6″ of snow as well…the models cant seem to handle this pattern that is for sure..
