Good Saturday, everyone. The current shot of chilly air continues across central and eastern Kentucky, but I do have some good news for summer loves. A major warm up is on the way over the next several days and this will lead us into early Summer.
After a cold start to the day, temps by this afternoon will head into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees. Skies will be mainly sunny with some clouds moving in later in the day. Those clouds are ahead of a milder push of air and they may put down a stray shower or thunderstorm by Sunday and Memorial Day.
That action will be fairly scattered. Temps will warm into the 70s for both days and may be near 80 across the west on Monday.
This pattern will take us directly into summer by the middle of next week…
That’s a very warm and humid flow coming from the western Gulf of Mexico. One wonders if that’s the look this upcoming summer will be giving us. My gut is saying it will be. If that’s the case… any tropical system that gets into the Gulf would have a greater chance to influence our weather.
Temps later this week will soar into the upper 80s to near 90.
Have a great weekend and take care.
Thanks, Chris! I’m going to enjoy today even more than! 41 this morning in Lawrenceburg. It was a great morning for a jog around the neighborhood. I’ve got the feeling this is the last pleasantly cool day we will see until Mid October. I think within a month you’ll see quite a few people wishing for cooler weather.
I just got back from a hike this morning and it feels great out there!
Aside from utility companies, I’m still trying to figure out who it is that actually enjoys hot and *humid* weather (“summer lovers”), as that is what is on the horizon per CB’s explanation. It completely detracts from being outside and enjoying summer for either those who have to work in it or play in it, so I find the concept of loving that type of weather more than a little mystifying.
Btw, did I miss CB’s summer seasonal forecast?
I agree with you on the hot and humid–I was in Phoenix in June of 2011. The last day I was there it reached 110 air temp but the dewpoint was in the 30’s. I had lunch outside in the shade and it was quite pleasant. Here, anything over 85 is generally unpleasant because our summertime dewpoints are often in the 60’s and 70’s.
I second this. I’ve been in west Texas with triple digit temperatures yet you don’t hardly sweat because the dewpoints are so low (except sometimes during the southwest monsoon season which starts around early July).
To me, even upper 70s with high dewpoints here in Kentucky is a bit uncomfortable.
Who are you to judge anyone else for liking warm weather?
I didn’t think I was trying to judge. I don’t enjoy hot and humid, but I don’t mind hot and less humid. Someone else might love a temp of 95 with a high dewpoint. I don’t quite understand why, but if it is their cup of tea, than I say enjoy it when it comes. That’s why Kentucky is a fun place to live–we get weather for all preferences to enjoy 🙂
I meant LD, but these reply things don’t make it easy. I’m not fond of people who fuss if someone likes snow, thunderstorms, or whatever.
Thanks, Chris. 45 in Somerset this morning and we have some fog. Not terrible, but patchy. Today sounds like its going to be a wonderful day. Going to visit the cemetery and then just take it easy the rest of the day. Doesn’t sound like the rest of the long weekend will be too shabby, either. Have a great Saturday, all and thanks to those who serve, and have served our country. You are respected and appreciated .
Dang, I guess this summer we will not be saying, “But it’s a dry heat”.
Yeah–last summer it was. Even though we hit 105 in Lexington the heat index never really was a factor. 2010 was different. It was a humid and hot summer, and I remember the heat index going above 110 in Central KY and 120 in Western KY. I sure hope that is not happening again.
I think whatever your preference–cold, hot, muggy, snowy, it can be agreed that yesterday was a “chamber of commerce” type day. Today is pleasant but a little more cloudy. Yesterday reminded me of Central Florida in the winter–sunny, low humidity, lows in the Upper 40’s highs pushing 70.
IF the rain shuts off we could get some dry heat yet, KY is all about patterns, wet spring very well could turn into a hot dry summer??
My grandfather always said about 1 inch of rain per week in summer was about perfect for crops and growing season in general!
Your grandfather said it well.
I can remember fairly serious droughts in 2012, 2007, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1998, and 1988 and 1983. The ones that stand out to me: 2012 because of the extreme temps, 2007 because the drought persisted so late in the season we saw in 90’s in October, 1988 because it was early (extreme temps in June) and 1983 for the overall number of days at 90 or above. They seem not to happen in back to back years, so I hope that is the case this year.
I hate when everything drys up, If it has to be hot and humid to get the rain so be it!
I remember the 1999 drought. From may/june to close to april 2000 i barely saw any rainfall what so ever. There was rumors of just xouple weeks worth water left. Laundry mats and car washed wasnt allowed to be open or had very limited days they could open. Hope we never see that kind of drought again.
June is coming so higher and muggy temps are sure to come. en near normal in temps since early april except for a few cool downs thrown in for the various small winters. (Dogwood, redbud, rosebud, black berry)
Thanks chris.
