Good Tuesday, everyone. We have a better looking day taking shape across the region as we set our sights on a busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend of weather. Rain, some snow and arctic cold are all on the menu for this big holiday.
Let’s kick things off with what’s happening out there today.
Showers exit far southeastern Kentucky early today with clearing settling in from the west through the day. Temps are noticeably colder with temps generally in the 40s.
Here are your radars to say goodbye to the early showers in the southeast…
Wednesday is a big day for travelers and for Kentucky Weather Center as we go with the annual Planes, Trains and Automobiles post. Y’all know you’re excited.
Here’s a breakdown of the long Thanksgiving weekend…
WEDNESDAY
- Clouds increase through the day with temps spiking toward 50-55.
- Rain develops quickly from southwest to northeast during the evening.
- Rain continues at night with the chance for a few flakes in the far north.
THANKSGIVING
- Gusty showers will be around early in the day with some lingering misty shower action.
- A few early day flakes are possible in the north.
- Temps hang into the low 40s for much of the day.
- A few flurries or snow showers kick in during the night.
FRIDAY
- A few flurries or snow showers will be noted across central and eastern Kentucky.
- I don’t anticipate anything other than some festive flakes.
- Temps struggle to get out of the low 30s for highs.
- Wind chills will generally be in the low and middle 20s.
SATURDAY
- It’s a cold day with temps generally 30-35.
- Clouds increase ahead of our next system.
- A clipper arrives Saturday night with a band of light snow.
- This zips in from west to east.
SUNDAY
- A light snowfall is possible to start the day. I could see a setup where an inch or two falls for parts of the state.
- The light snow maker pushes to our east as arctic air builds in.
- Temps may not get out of the 20s for highs.
- Gusty winds make it feel like the teens for much of the day.
- A few lingering flurries or snow showers will be possible in the east through Sunday night.
- Single digit wind chills may show up Sunday night.
In terms of the model forecasts, I like what the Short-Range Canadian Model is doing with the initial system Wednesday through Friday morning…
The Canadian Model then goes on to look similar with the Thanksgiving system and also shows our weekend light snow maker…
The EURO has settled in with a weaker solution with the lead low and is also pretty good looking with the weekend light snow maker…
Just a few days ago, the GFS had no system impacting our weather for Wednesday and Thursday. It’s now back with the system and almost matches everything else. It also lost the weekend clipper but is starting to see it again…
Temps tank this weekend and into early next week with a few days with highs only in the 20s. Wind chills will be VERY cold and may flirt with zero or a bit below during Sunday and Monday mornings.
The Canadian continues to be, by far, the coldest with the wind chill numbers from 7am Friday through 7am Monday…
The EURO numbers aren’t quite as low, but they’re still frigid…
The same goes for the GFS…
Several more systems will likely drop in next week into the following weekend as this exceptionally cold start to December continues…
The Ensembles keep the colder then normal temps coming all the way through the next two weeks…
The long-range EURO Weeiklies now go through the first 9 days of January and show some pretty good snow chances during this time…
I’ll have another update later today. Make it a terrific Tuesday and take care.
Thanks Chris. Despite the Weather, we have A Lot to be Thankful For this Holiday Season.
Have a Great and Safe Thanksgiving Everyone !
