Good Tuesday, everybody. Since the movie Wicked is all the rage right now, it’s fitting that our weather gets in on the act as Old Man Winter blows some wicked wind chills in here later this week. This is part of an incredibly cold pattern to end November and begin December.
Let’s kick things off with what’s going on out there today before we get into the arctic shot ahead.
Light snow will be winding down across southeastern Kentucky after leaving behind light accumulations, with some areas topping the 1″ mark across southeastern Kentucky. This did in fact lead to travel issues in these areas as some roads became snow covered…

Granted this was a marginal event, but a Winter Weather Advisory was needed across southeastern Kentucky. Several school systems here are closed today.
Light snow ends quickly across the southeast this morning and you can follow this action out of town on your Kentucky Weather radars…
Temps this morning are frigid with readings in the upper teens to low 20s for many. Wind chills will drop into the high single digits and low teens. Skies become partly sunny today with highs only in the upper 20s to low 30s with wind chills much lower than that.
The sequel to this morning’s cold comes early Thursday in the form of…
Those wind chill numbers scream in here behind an arctic front that arrives Wednesday night. Here’s a breakdown:
- Temps ahead of this boundary likely hit the 40s Wednesday afternoon and evening.
- Winds are a MAJOR player with gusts between 40mph and 50mph possible.
- Showers ahead of the front then switch to some snow showers and squalls behind it. Light accumulations may show up in spots for central and eastern Kentucky.
- Temps absolutely tank behind this front. Readings at midnight Thursday may be near 40 then drop into the teens a few hours later.
- Wind chills Thursday morning will flirt with 0 at times.
- Temps Thursday stay in the 20s with wind chills in the teens pretty much all day with singles returning that night.
Let’s start with the wind gusts. Most models have wind gusts pushing 40mph, but the NAM fam has gusts going above and beyond…
The NAM fam is also picking up on the rain showers to snow showers/squalls. Here’s the future radar from the Hi Res NAM Wednesday night through 8am Thursday…
And the NAM…

These wind chills qualify as wicked…
The cold relaxes as we get deeper into the weekend and this will set the stage for some back and forth as we head into next week. A week likely to feature a couple of big storm systems impacting our region with rain and snow threats.
Looking down the road toward Christmas Week, we find the EURO Weeklies showing another colder than normal pattern for our region…
That same 7 day period offers up some snow chances as well…
I’ll have updates later today so check back. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. Late yesterday evening, we had a heavy Snow shower that resulted in about a half inch of Snow. Not looking forward to those ” Wicked Wind Chills, ” but looking forward to a milder, wetter trend starting this weekend.
Enjoy the Day Everyone !
