Good Friday everyone and welcome to the weekend. This will be the coldest air of the young winter season that settles in for the next couple of days. It’s likely to get started off with some light snow and furry action later this evening and overnight.
The cold front will arrive on the scene this evening and we will see clouds and a breeze on the increase out ahead of it. Temps today will spike up into the 40s with a few sprinkles possible just ahead of the front.
Post frontal flurries and some light snow will then kick in as the cold sweeps into town. Those flakes will be gone by early Saturday and MAY put down a little sugar coating in a few spots.
Let’s follow the action…
Current Temps
The rest of the weekend is a cold one with lows dipping into the upper teens and low 20s. Highs Saturday will stay in the low and mid 30s and rebound into the upper 30s and low 40s by Sunday.
There is another weak system that moves in late Tuesday and early Wednesday bringing us the chance for a few showers. We get a weak front slipping through Tuesday night and this may have enough cold air for a flake or two early Wednesday.
That’s when we turn our attention toward a big plains storm that gets going late Wednesday and Thursday. That deepens as it heads into the western Great Lakes and would cause showers to break out around here. This deep storm should also unleash some of the deep cold in Canada and send it southward into much of the country by next weekend.
GFS
Take note of that system hanging back across the southwestern states as several of the latest model runs show that coming out and turning into a big storm across the east. The GFS Ensembles have shown this signal for a while now.
That’s something to keep an eye on as we go forward.
Wondering about the weather as we head closer to Christmas? The Canadian Ensemble mean shows a ridge up the west coast with a nice trough across the eastern half of the country…
That would ensure we would have cold air across the region into Christmas weekend. Keep dreaming about that White Christmas and let’s see if we can make it two in a row.
Have a fantastic Friday and take care.

Last xmas eve CKY did get a nice snowfall about 2-3 inches if I remeber right.
Lakes cutter is going to burry some folks from the plains to the upper great lakes.
So much for the “big early winter” that was hyped on here for most of November. Rain and 50s the second week of December next week is not an early winter. It’s a big disappointment!
I am not complaining about the lack of snow….but I really did think we would have seen snow by now! We certainly had by this time last year!
To Old Man Winter…we don’t need your snow…we love sunshine. We love cold, rainy days and snow above 2500 feet. This is YOUR season man and you are going to rain it away cause you can’t perform.
Reverse psychology. : )
I still feel good about my outlook from November. Still think Christmas will be white, and I still think January will be harsh this year. Two weeks to go, and business is gonna pick up around here.
I hope so. Cold and rain sucks. lol
I second that!!!! COLD RAIN SUCKS!!!!! LET IT SNOW!!!! As we know here in central KY., Lou. Area, we are over due for a big “all snow event”.
I third! Nothing worse than a bone chilling, cold, damp, rainy winter day. Except maybe ice…..
I am not optimistic about this season. I think the temperatures will be near or above normal. As far as snowfall goes I think we will be below normal.
It is interesting how it is always next month that will be “harsh”. In Oct. we hear that the end of Nov. will be harsh, then in mid Nov. it will be snowy in early December, now it is Dec. and we are hearing it will come at the end of the month. I think it will be a boring winter with little snow.
Boyle County: Sunny 48* 12:30pm
The oscillations outlook does not seem to strongly support cold/snow thru Christmas. However they do look more favorable than we have had for the second half of December.
Ugh…snow, please come and visit us. ALL of us. Our kind neighbors in the North and West and Central Kentucky…we want you to cover all of us with as much as you can…no snow domes, no cold rain, no teasing…man, what do we have to do?
I’m with ya,, keep pushing it back, Sorry Chris (I really enjoy your blog-but sometimes alot of hype about “what’s to come”..Its sounds alot better than reality!
I can remember more SNOW TO RAIN events than I can all snow events. Now that is even worse than rain to snow.
Well, we had snow here in Oct and we have had some cold weather at times. On the flip side though we have had some warm weather. But, in the end we did have a shot at snow in Nov and that is something. Sure, the storm missed here but we did at least see a few flakes.
And I did see some forecasts that show most of the Eastern U.S. in the below Normal temperature range. That should be a good sign. And a few were saying that precipitation would be below normal but that snowfall would be normal or above normal for most of the Eastern U.S.
I think it is a little to early to talk about winter being a letdown or going to have little snow.
I have given up on rain to snow events. They never seem to transition when they are supposed to and generally stay all rain to the very end and then a brief snow shower will occur as the last of the moisture exits from the area. December the 9th and still have not seen a pure snowflake. 15 more weeks and it will be time to set the tomatoes out.
I wonder if last winter spoiled us with the early cold and snow? I mean, it is only Dec 9th. Meteorological winter is only 9 days old. There’s a whole lot of winter left.
A little bit of stuff increasing on radar north of KY? Central KY might see its best flakes of season this evening????
Dont dis a winter prediction from wxman. Especially from him. If you hear a bad winter prediction with snow involved, you know he has a feeling cause hes always being a realist and talking about the rain. This winter will likely only get worse.
Not looking good through New Year’s. :/ We may just have to endure this winter for a better one in 2012-13! At least the last two winters have been great!

Accuweather, way to go out on a limb, cold in Alaska. Chris will rule over those guys 🙂
I sure hope so! I’d take a Chris Bailey over any AccuWeather met any day. Not only is CB bold and mostly accurate, but he is humble and that trio is hard to come by!
Well, since nearly everyone is feeling down about the weather, we’re also gonna miss out on a full lunar eclipse, while the western part of U.S. gets a full view.
Not only that, but the total eclipse will be toward moonset, when the moon appears largest thanks to those atmospheric effects.
Boy, when it rains, it pours. Oops, sorry.
Great? In my seven years in KY I have never seen more than 6 inches of snow at any one time and then only once. WE have never had more than 12 inches in any one year. Great? Lousy really. Perhaps it depends on where you are. I am just south of Lexington.
the jet does look zonal (overall) into the extended range and beyond. this may just end up being a mild, wet winter. There will be cool days (like today) but overall I think those of use waiting on accumulating snows are going to have to hope sometime in the middle part of january we may see some snow. Until then every storm is going to be a non snow producer for not only KY but for areas as far north as the Great Lakes are even looking mild. No blocking=no accumulating snow.
COLD WINTERS are over rated in these parts. The last 2 winters were cold with no big (old school) storms to show for it, just high utility bills. I’ll take a mild winter with just one 10plus in. snow or 2. 1998 ring a bell?? Good yr 20in snows in FEB, National Championship in April 🙂
I agree with the low snow expectations this winter and NO, I do not say that every winter. I have said it a few times (and correct by accident), but the last several winters I have been optimistic for the winter outlook. Not this time.
I expect the “33 and higher mainly wet and 32 and lower mainly dry” to be adhered to for systems, a LOT more than not this winter.
Sure, the mountains will see some good chances and so will the northern areas, but this may be a winter that makes the previous few seem like Old School winters for snow events.
I do expect Tennessee to see more events AGAIN than us. For whatever reason, winter systems get T-boned when entering KY and then break up or wear down, the further through KY they go.
They then seem to regain steam after passing KY. Wild, uncanny and nuts.
Still, always a chance for Bubba busters 🙂
Flurries in nky.
YES! JAN 2002 in lex two 7” snow events with much above normal temps…i like that if its not going to snow 50 and sun is what i want! the snow dissapeared quite quickly after those events but they were nice big snows! i was in 6th grade i remeber measuring them! I remeber staying up all night for the jan 18 or 19th 2002 storm that hammered lex with about 7 inches in just a few hours 🙂
Ha, watch those flurries just disintegrate as they cross over into Kentucky.
