Good evening, everyone. It’s a wintry day as we close out the week and kick off the weekend as some festive flakes fly across the region. A light snowfall is on tap for areas of central and eastern Kentucky later today and into early Saturday.

Let’s start things out with a quick breakdown of this system:

  • This clipper dives in from northwest to southeast today.
  • The main area of impact is still expected to be across central and eastern Kentucky.
  • Light snow pushes in quickly this morning and may be introduced by a quick-hitting band of rain showers.
  • Light snow takes control by Friday afternoon and continues into the evening.
  • I’m going to be watching for a possible band of overachieving snows setting up somewhere across north central or northeastern Kentucky.
  • From there, a strong northwest flow touches off snow showers and flurries Friday night into Saturday.
  • Light accumulations are a good bet across central and eastern Kentucky.

There’s a Winter Weather Advisory out for parts of the state through tonight…

I haven’t made many changes to the overall snow forecast, but the chance for a band of overachieving snow is there for the areas I mentioned. Here’s the Last Call For Snowfall…

As far as the overachieving potential in the northcentral part of the state, the Canadian family of models have pretty much settled in on this possibility…

The GFS has something similar but is just a little farther east…

Wind chills today will drop into the teens at times and we will see the teens for wind chills showing up from time to time this weekend, especially during the morning hours.

The next system rolls in with a few showers for Christmas Eve and Day, but this isn’t washout material. Temps come up after this with the potential for another big rain or storm system late next week or next weekend. That’s ahead of a change back to winter right around the new year.

The stage is set for the possibility of a harsh winter pattern developing early in the new year. Significant blocking signatures continue to show up from the west coast to Alaska and that may connect to blocking across northern Canada.

The EURO Weeklies have been really dialed in on this possibility and they are growing more confident as we get closer. Watch this deep trough get established in the first week of January…

By week two, this thing is is really digging in…

The signal is still going pretty strong for week three…

Keep in mind that the EURO Weeklies are made up of around 100 individual members, so to see averages like that is impressive from this far away.

I’ll have updates later today so check back. Until then, I have your tracking tools including our Kentucky Weather Cams to watch the flakes flying across different parts of the state…

Have a fantastic Friday and take care.
