Good evening, everyone. Our Winter Storm THREAT continues and will very likely be upgraded to an ALERT later tonight or Friday. The NWS is getting well out in front of this storm with a Winter Storm Watch that’s out for many areas already.
The Winter Storm Watch is out for much of central and western Kentucky and more counties will be added on Friday. This will encompass all of northern Kentucky and much of eastern Kentucky…
Kudos the NWS offices for bring proactive on this. As I’ve talked about before, headlines are really the only way to get folks attention.
The Weather Prediction Center continues to increase the odds of significant ice and snow for much of Kentucky…
I’ve put together a series of maps to help you plan for the impacts this storm may have on your part of the state.
Here’s how things may play out during the day on Sunday…
By Sunday night, we see the southern part of Kentucky dealing with some rain with the ice and snow still going strong across the northern half of the state…
As this low pushes to our east Monday, morning ice and a mix goes over to snow with light snow taking over by afternoon…
The latest run of the EURO this afternoon is pretty much in line with the above maps…
The amount of freezing rain with this is very concerning…
There’s also some sleet accumulation showing up…
The snowfall map from the EURO is way up there across the northern half of the state…
This is essentially what the Canadian Model was showing earlier today. The latest Short Range Canadian Model only goes through 1am Monday and looks very similar….
The GFS continues to be just a smidge north of other models, but still has a similar overall look and output…
Bitterly cold temps come in behind this with the chance for below zero temps by the middle of next week.
Watch the end of next week, folks. We have the potential for a system dropping in from the northwest to phase with a system across the south. The models are hinting at this possibility…
I’ll have the latest on CW Lexington tonight at 10pm and on WKYT at 11. I may even throw in another KWC update before the main post later tonight.
In the meantime, we have a light snow maker dropping in from the northwest tonight and early Friday. This can put down some light accumulations and I have you all set to track it…
Enjoy the rest of the evening and take care.
Looks like South-Central IL and South-Central IN are in the sweet spot for the heaviest snows in excess of a foot.
Here in the Chicago Metro Area, we’re on the far northern fringe of the storm with only a little snow expected.
You guys in KY look to be hit hard with the freezing rain and sleet. Hope it’s not as bad as the computer models are showing.
I would think almost a inch of ice is more than concerning according to the Euro..These old hills in Eastern Ky would be a disaster..Just get prepared ..Better safe than sorry..
Your right they would I hope the ice totals come down. If not we are in for a rough time.
WKY misses out again
Feel your pain Russell..These old warm noses can be heart breaking..Have no idea what’s going to happen but seen it too many times we end up with rain and backside snow..
It truly is. It’s the most aggravating area to live for snow lovers. I just hope the ice is not as high as they think maybe tomorrow they will have a better idea as we get closer.
Very true WxW it’s just been a long time since we had a good snow. Good defined as needing your 4 x 4.
South Central Kentucky will also be on the outside looking in with this storm, but the cold air pushing in the the initial stage of a Polar Vortex intrusion. The La Nina moisture flow will be sending more storms our way. I’m liking our chances by mid January.
