Good Wednesday evening, gang. Rounds of strong and severe storms continue to pound much of the Ohio Valley and that action is slowly slipping southeastward toward Kentucky. This will arrive into parts of the bluegrass state overnight and early Thursday.
As of right now… the worst of the severe weather looks poised to stay north of the Ohio River. The atmosphere across Kentucky has a bit of a cap in place and that will have to weaken to allow these to drop in here. That should take place overnight with scattered strong and severe storms getting into the northern half of the state.
Damaging winds and hail continue to be the primary threat. Torrential rains and a light show will be likely with any storm that’s out there.
Additional rounds of showers and storms will be on and off into the day on Thursday as a cold front works in here. Cooler and drier air will slowly push in by late Thursday into Thursday night.
I will have a “normal” update coming later Thursday. For now… let’s track…
Updates and warnings via twitter: Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog. I will also have updates on my Chris Bailey WKYT Facebook page.
Take care.

Stay safe, northeastern Kentucky. This includes regular posters here like “sue(flatwoods ky)”
A PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) Severe Thunderstorm Watch now in effect for all of southern Ohio until 6am Eastern. Kentucky counties along the river across from Ohio are a bit too close for comfort. There is an enhanced risk for very strong winds exceeding 65 knots/75 mph.
thanks! : )
I’m sorry I read that- flashbacks to last years derecho where I stood and watched treed in my woods go down like dominoes.
Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen again.
Trees, stupid typo.
Just popped in to check out the radar…that entire line bowed out and it’s an entire state in length up in Ohio. Wow. That thing looks awful on radar, I hope it’s not actually that severe on the ground by comparison.
So last night’s north-look was correct. Not a fan of damagingly bad storms anyway, so okay with me.
So the forecast high today is 81°, its 8am and its 79°. So I’m guessing we’re not going to have that much durinal (daytime) heating. Though its actually a bit warm and muggy. Nasty morning feeling. By the way, Louisville sey a new record warm low last night of 77° and Bowling Green of 79°. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/product_pick.php?site=lmk&product=rer&issuedby=SDF;BWG&format=CI&version=1&glossary=0
Purely a selfish comment here, but O Great Weather Professional Chris, please tell me Paintsville will stay dry enough to get a 6pm softball game in! I do not care for that line hanging down from Cincy.
I sure hope everybody stays safe to our north.
STW out for entire area.
I hate those mornings where it’s 5 am and still 80 degrees……..I think last summer one morning in Lexington it was still 82 degrees at 5 am, but I think ultimately that morning dropped to 81……..That’s a crazy hi low temp for this area
Stay safe, Kentucky! At least you will get a break from the heat (unlike here in middle Tennessee). Looks like this line will clip Lexington, but should make for an entertaining light show for some. Hope the winds are not as strong as expected.
Gettin’ really dark, wall cloud heading straight to Lex.
Just had some 40 to 50 mph winds along with heavy rain and some lightning in east Frankfort, hopefully it cools off now!
That was INSANE the wind and rain that just blew through NW Lex….I’ve seen severe thunderstorm warnings in the past that pale in comparison. I’m not being dramatic. Herbies were sliding down the street with the wind.
Really dark and pouring down here in Nicholasville.
Chris, how come your Twitter feed is no longer showing up in my browser? Any one else having this problem?
It was ugly in Lex. Can’t believe no warning.
I don’t see it either. It used to be in the top right column…..Now it just shows new/past post info
Wow, we’ve been in severe thunderstorm warnings but its nothing compared to this storm! This storm was very severe and dont know why there was no warning. Winds were crazy and lightning and extremely heavy rain!
I think this snuck up on the NWS this morning, they where saying earlier very small chance of a shower or storm??
I know rite! It’s like a lot of the storms I’ve seen in this area that have not been severe are actually worse than the severe ones
Warnings have gone up for the line now, after the fact. I guess this got someone’s attention:

It has been my experience that our absolute worst and scariest storms have NOT been issued a severe thunderstorm warning. It happens at least once a year.
This morning, I was out walking and kept checking the radar on my phone. No warnings, just a narrow line moving my way. I saw it was approaching Paris and headed home. I barely made it back before all heck broke loose!
If I’d been caught out in that wind, under all my huge trees, it may have been super scary.
We have a very large tree across our road so we can’t get to Paris!
And yesterday we were all waiting and waiting and waiting…
Crazy weather.
And I’d like to add that when you have property damage and tell your insurance company that it was due to a storm, they look to see if a warning was issued. It makes a difference.
I am friends with the Danville FD chief on Facebook, and he has posted pictures of wind damage in the city. Absolutely crazy.
I am ready for a good stretch of dry weather to arrive. Not looked back at April, but since May 1 (Knox. Co.) running over 50 percent in rain to dry days. Getting to be like Seattle or somewhere, where more than likely you think it’s going to rain. Chris was spot on with this pattern going to carry us into summer.
