Good afternoon, everyone. Light snow continues to overachieve into much of central and eastern Kentucky and this is causing renewed travel issues. These flakes are being pushed by arctic cold taking hold tonight as we wait for another winter storm Friday and Saturday.
Many areas, including Lexington, have already picked up a fresh inch of snow. Another inch or so may fall today through the evening, keeping travel a mess.
Can skies clear tonight to allow temps to crash to below zero readings? That will be a tough ask for many areas, but the HRRR is a little more optimistic on clearing tonight. Check out the Thursday morning lows from the model…
With a deep snowpack, clearing skies would lead to lows going well below zero. If the clouds hang, your temp hangs in the 10-15 degree range.
As expected, Winter Storm Watches have been issued ahead of the next system, but I think these should come several counties farther north and west…
That Winter Weather Advisory in the east was issued today for the light snowfall going on today.
As hard as it is to believe, I think the GFS actually has a pretty good handle on this storm…
That’s a widespread 3″-6″ snowfall across Kentucky with some higher totals in the southeast. That matches up well with my First Call for Snowfall…
I’ll update this on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm today and I’ll be back here on KWC later today. Until then, I have your tracking tools including our Kentucky Weather Cams to watch the flakes flying across different parts of the state…
Enjoy the day and take care.
When we have events like this why does the radar have such a void in the middle between Louisville and Eastern KY… Is that like a radar thing? Because even though radar shows NOTHING, it’s snowing..
AS FOR THE CLOUDS… If I were a betting person, I say the clouds win… I mean, how knows, they may just clear and move out …but I get the vibe they stay….
He has mentioned before that these flakes are likely so dry that radar isn’t picking them up, and some times the radar beam is going right over them depending on location. These are pretty airy and fluffy flakes, at least in Nicholasville. That would be my guess.
You beat me to it. This is much more concise reply than mine. For some reason your reply wasn’t showing when I replied.
Hey Mark. It’s definitely a radar thing. Due to the curvature of the earth, there tend to be areas that are in the “shadow” of radar coverage. The two radar sites in central Kentucky are at Ft. Knox (LVX) and Jackson (JKL). Depending on where the precipitation exists above the surface, the radar may not be able to see it. At a point equidistant from LVX and JKL, the radar coverage will be poorest.
Thanks Chris. We been having Snow showers all day long. Maybe an additional inch of Snow accumulation here in Maple. You have really been busy, and I appreciate all your updates.
Have a Good Evening Chris.
Chris, I’m sorry for all the weather nonsense I posted this morning. It won’t happen again. From now on, I will only post the precipitation totals for Maple.
Take Care Chris and Rest when you can.
Still having light snow it’s more than I expected. Any weather bloggers that would like to take a guess on Friday Saturday where the storm or precipitation may set up??? I would love to hear your thoughts. I always worry on the South east on the warm air coming with it. I will take whatever I get but please no ice or rain lol. Looks like Tennessee is going to get a good one.
