Good Friday, everyone. High humidity, warm temps and a daily threat for afternoon or evening thunderstorms. That sounds pretty tropical to me. The only thing missing out of all this? The beach. 🙂 This is a pattern that looks to hang tough into the first half of next week. That’s when a big pattern change is being advertised on many of the forecast models.
Today’s weather will feature temps in the middle 80s for the eastern half of the state with low 90s across the west. Please disregard to the daytime temps coming from the official Lexington thermometer at Blue Grass Airport. Something has happened to it over the past month and it’s spitting out temps way to warm. This is going to become a major rant if it doesn’t get corrected soon because it is corrupting historical data for the city.
Scattered storms will develop in the afternoon and evening hours. Any storm that goes up will be a slow mover and may be on the strong side…
The setup this weekend will make it feel even more tropical as our winds come from the western and central Gulf of Mexico…
That will continue to keep the core of the hottest air well to our west. This will keep us in the tropical atmosphere until some big changes take place by the end of next week into the following weekend. That’s when a massive trough is being forecast to develop and dig in here…
That would lead to a heck of a shot of late June cool air to go along with wet weather. The GFS has jumped on board with a highly anomalous blocking pattern across North America for the same time…
Have a great Friday and take care.

And what does this change mean in terms of weather? Something bad?

The official temp and measured precip in Louisville is taken at SDF which is Louisville International Airport which is just insane to take a official temp reading or any kind of measured precip especially in the winter. Louisville is taken a official temp at a airport where hundreds of planes come and go black asphalt huge jet planes coming and going. There have been more times that I can count that Louisville has had record high temps that should not of happen. The NWS in Louisville is located 5 maybe 6 miles from the airport and the temp difference can be as much as 3 to 7 degree difference from the airport to the NWS office on a daily basis. The local mets have been harping on this for years its just not accurate nothing seems to get done about it. How in the world can you get any kind of accurate measure for snow at a major airport and make it a official reading? Its ridiculous.
You can get more of a accurate reading from a bank thermometer than from the official reading at Louisville International Airport. Jet planes black asphalt, heat island affect at its best. I think it was two years ago Louisville was smashing record high temps as early as 2pm if the official temp was taken at the NWS office half those supposively record highs would still be in place.
The Lexington thermometer too warm? That is a new thing. I know SDF has some issues due to all the concrete and runways close to the station. Did they move the station at LEX?
New heat island effect in Lexington Maybe, Louisville has always been 5 or so degrees warmer due to the large city?
John Belski was always bringing that up. He always thought the temp and precip should be taken at Bowman Field. I live right across the street from Bowman and our temps are usually 2 or 3 degrees cooler that the main airport. Bowman is still in the urban service district, basically inside the Watterson Expresway, so you still have the urban heat island but not as pronounced as SDF.
Any large city is going to be warmer than outlying areas and its at night when you really see the difference. The lows at my house rarely drop below 75 during summer while the burbs will be in the mid 60’s. in winter, my first frost rarely comes before the first week in December. Last year, when most of Kentucky had those early freezes, I still had flowers blooming at Thanksgiving.
Getting hot in Frankfort, heat index 92, temp 88, Hope a scattered shower finds its way to my yard, getting a little dry looking!
Louisville should be a bit warmer than Lexington due to the elevation difference. Say–500 feet. Here are the i”official” highs for today in stations covered by NWS Louisville. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.
Lexington: 86
Louisville (SDF): 90
Louisville (Bowman): 88
Frankfort: 87
Bowling Green: 88
On a day with clear skies and light winds, SDF will almost always be the hottest reading.
