Good Friday, folks. We are putting the wraps on a brutally cold and snowy January with a taste of March weather. That certainly sounds about right for how we roll with weather extremes across our part of the world.

Rain this morning is very heavy across parts of central and eastern Kentucky and it’s leaving behind high water concerns. Please stay alert to this potential.

Sunshine surges in later this morning into the afternoon as temps hit the upper 50s to low 60s. From there, watch for scattered showers and thunderstorms to go up with the potential for a strong storm or two, especially in the south and east.

You can see these storms on the future radar from the HRRR starting at 1pm and ending at 1am…

Chilly temps come in behind a front dropping through the region this evening and that gives us a seasonable start to February. Highs on Saturday are mainly in the 40s with low clouds lingering before some sun tries to take over.

Temps on Sunday surge toward 60 and then spike even more into much of next week. There could be on any given day, but the trend through next Thursday is a mild one. It’s by Thursday and Friday, Old Man Winter fights bag with another storm system bringing in cold air. From this point, several additional systems look to bring the chance for winter weather back to the Commonwealth.

Again, the models are only giving us some guidance on overall trends and will continue to change from run to run.

Here’s the EURO…

And the GFS…

The EURO Weeklies continue to show this very active pattern taking us through the middle of March. The total precipitation forecast from the average of around 100 members looks like this…

That puts the bullseye of above normal precipitation on top of us…

For those asking if winter is over… No, it’s not. We will likely have several more snowfalls into March and I will be shocked if we don’t have another winter storm threat or two.

I’ll have another update or two later today. Until then, let’s track whatever is showing up out there today…
