Happy 4th of July, everybody. Mother nature is looking to steal the thunder from our big day as rounds of showers and thunderstorms work northward across the state. These storms will produce torrential rainfall and that will combine with a wet ground to give us the potential for high water.
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect through Friday for all of central and eastern Kentucky…
The floodgates from the Gulf of Mexico are open for business as a tropical moisture supply streams into the state. Waves of rain and storms will roll in from the south and these will put down a lot of water across our region. Most areas will pick up 1″-3″ of rain through Friday and some spots could see up to 5″.
That would be enough to cause flash flooding and is something we will need to keep a very close eye on. If you live in a flood prone or low lying area, please keep watch on water levels.
Additional showers and storms will be around this weekend and that action may keep the high water threat going.
Let’s track what’s out there today…
I will send out updates and warnings via twitter: Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog. I will also have updates on my Chris Bailey WKYT Facebook page.
Happy 4th of July and take care.

Good Morning,
We live in St. Matthews and would Love to know how much rain we have received in 2013…total so far.
Our rain guage shows many inches of rain more than what is published in the paper.
Do you keep track of rain totals by areas in Louisville? If so, Please direct me to that site.
Thanks! Lois
Mr. Bailey, I don’t have a twitter feed anymore, and several others have lost theirs as well. Thank you for the updates!
Looks like the heaviest and steadiest rain is along and West of I-65. I saw no models that predicted this. I am convinced that the weather models are of no use in Kentucky!
Might want to adjust your thoughts.
No, I certainly want to adjust them. I should have known not to speak too soon! I was actually anticipating some dry hours here in the U.S. 127 corridor based on this mornings’ radar returns but that has certainly not been the case. The areas between I-65 and I-75 look to continue to get hammered.
Whatever model Chris was showing on WKYT yesterday nailed the forecast so far and I mean 100% nailed
I didn’t see that. I read the forecast discussion from LMK and looked at the GFS/NAM yesterday afternoon and they seemed to have shifted the heaviest rain East of say–U.S. 127 and showed very little West of 65. Kudos to Chris on nailing this forecast, and for taking time to respond to my comment on the Fourth of July!
It’s rained for a good part of the day here in Louisville but little came of it. Now don’t get me wrong, we’ve had a decent soaking rain but nothing that would justify the Flood Watch continuing for Jefferson County, even with all of the rain we’ve had these past few weeks.
It looks like the rain is more west than anticipated. As a resident in eastern Kentucky, I think the 4th of July plans for outdoor activities here should be okay for the most part (unless the rain shifts more east).
Well, looks like no Reds game today 🙁
Richmond misses it to the east and misses it to the west. How’s that possible??
Now getting some moderate rain. this is the oddest moving rain system…some from SW, some from SE. Just odd.
I no longer can see the twitter feeds on the right side of the page either. And I’m sick of the rain! I had planned to go to Red, White & Boom for the first time tomorrow – may have to rethink that.
The heaviest rain is now shifting toward the I 75 area and just to the east of that, folks that missed out earlier are going to get nailed this evening!
chris, what happened to your used to be very reliable twitter feed on the right side of the blog…..another thing is why don’t you ever come in with a 2nd update during the day at some point during the day……i know it is summer time and we do have more dull days than exciting days in the summer than the winter but with no twitter feed now for about 2 or 3 weeks we have no way of keeping up with your thoughts…..hope you have had a great holiday so far and thank you for all you do for us….i am curious as to how much rain actually fell in central ky. today cause it looks as though the axis of heaviest rain fell through central and parts of eastern ky………please put the rain fall numbers up if it is not too much of a problem…..thank you for all you do……make it a great evening.
I was thinking the same thing about updating the blog a second time. I started reading this blog last fall and he’s always had second updates. I know CB is a winter lover but weather happens in the summertime too, enough to put an evening update.
