Good Thursday everyone. It has been a busy past few days with rounds of snow across much of the region. Overnight snow showers and squalls put down some fresh accumulations for some across central and eastern Kentucky.
We will still see some slick travel across parts of the area so be cautious when driving early today. Some very light snows and flurries will be with us to start things out before the flakes give it up for this go around.
Saying goodbye can be a hard thing for many to do, so just use the radar to wave bye bye to the snows for now…
Highs today return to the 20s as some rays of sun make an appearance for the first time in a while… especially for the central and western parts of the state.
Friday will be a pretty good weather day with temps back into the 30s under mostly sunny skies. This is how our weekend starts… but the big question is how will it end? A clipper will be moving across the Great Lakes and may bring a period of some light snow into the region late Saturday and Sunday.
A second storm will then drop quickly in behind the departing clipper by Monday. This low will dive across the Ohio Valley and should be met by another wave of low pressure coming up the western slopes of the Appalachian Mountains. To be honest… every model shows a different evolution of this whole setup and they change from run to run. Those changes can have a big difference in the actual weather around here and I suspect it won’t be until later Friday we see them converging on a solution.
Snow, rain or a mix of the two would be possible early next week. Just for kicks… here is the latest run of the GFS…
That will change later today… but I had to have a map to show you guys.
Whatever happens from this system early next week… keep an eye on what drops in behind it for the middle and end of the week. That is a possible big deal storm for much of the eastern half of the country.. barring the early week one doesn’t blow up. Any storm that really cranks up next week can cause the arctic air filling Canada to spill in across much of the country.
I will have more updates later today so check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

That weather map for monday looks very impressive. Hopefully it shakes out like that as all snow.
Maybe MSU’s classes won’t start on Tuesday if the system for Monday gives us ice.
Our luck in KY is that it will be all rain and plenty of it when rain is in the mix it always seems we get it but snow now that’s a different story.
CB doesn’t sound too confident about this one yet so I am concerned about wintry precip. Sounds like rain from most mets. Bring on spring.
Looks like light snow to HEAVY RAIN to light snow to bitter cold for a few days……Lets hope the cold edge makes it in here before the precip starts…THINK SNOW…
I’d love a break from the snow. I have to take care of farm animals all day every day and this is getting old. Also, our driveway gets deep snow drifts when we have wind. Right now we are stuck up here on our hill. This started happening last year in February. It never happened until then and it’s happened five times in the past eleven months. Something is different but we can’t figure out what it is. We bought a snow blower but that doesn’t help when hubby has to leave at 4 a.m. and there is no light down the hill. Gripe, gripe, gripe. Okay, I’m done. 🙂
Never such a spread out event for such little results. All Richmond area got was the Tuesday snow of less than 2″ and none of the wrap around or squalls for any further accumualtion. From a practical standpoint, our flakes stopped falling on Tuesday.
Whatever happened to the wide impact squalls and wrap around. Even those events are iffy with results now.
Seriously, if I hear “bring on spring” one more time on here, I’m going to jump through muy screen! People, we have alot of winter to go through, yes, it has been snowy for all..some of you have alot more than others,,but the fact is, its only Jan. 13th! ALOT of winter is to come, so if it rains here and there, chill out, it will snow again and it will get cold again, and it will warm up a little and then back to cold, etc.etc.etc…Spring will be here in the middle of MArch, until then bundle up, (for us snow lovers–pray it will snow 5 feet) stay warm, do the best you can if you have a hard time in the snow, but please quit saying–Bring on spring..
You must just be living in the wrong spot. It snowed, and accumulated (not much, but some) on and off all day in Lawrenceburg. Currently snowing this morning with a fresh “dusting” on the driveway I swept off last night!
how true, considering we typically don’t get our snow until the end of Jan, Feb, and the beginning of March. Gonna be a long winter for some.
still getting light snow showers here in knox co. got about 1/2 to maybe 3/4 of an inch of new snow last night.. A rain event monday could spell big troubles down here with all ths snow on the ground + frozen ground + heavy rains = FLOODING = more school days missed…we’re at day 14 !! now of days missed due to weather…
Nothing on the radar but, the snow sure is coming down! We’ve had another good coating this morning but, the radar shows nada.
Its 9:00 and here is Williamsburg it has really been coming down about 30 minutes or so.
Morning everyone! Hope your day is off to a good start. Although it is not showing up on radar, we are still getting light snow here. It has snowed enough to put a very light coating back where there were cars parked. Not much, but a little bit. Wind is not too bad this morning, so far. Temp is at 18 here.
BubbaG, I am in agreement with you. We have had a few snow events, but still not a big one. (more than 6) We got close at Christmas, but I, too would like to see one BIG snow. then, it can quit for the winter if it chooses.
The point is for a lot of folks is if the events are going to be these little drive-bys, might as well bring on spring. I think that is a fair perspective.
So far, the events have missed the usual areas. How can that NOT get old after 13 years?
The first map that CB posted for this event that showed the ironic low-snow sandwich with heavy snow warnings both north and south of most of KY was a significant moment for a lot of folks. It was all the perspective they needed.
It is what it is.
Yep. We can only go buy the results. Darth Bubba may become the norm again, since the results speak for themselves. Seriously though, these small snows are more annoying than anything else, but respect others that think the contrary.
Wow..these snow ratios must be high. Nothing on radar but snow falling at a good clip in Lawrenceburg. Nice new coating on the deck.
Storm total–about 3 or 4 inches, hard to tell with drifting
Adding in Friday Night/Saturday’s event, probably or 7 inches in the past week.
I consider it a rare event in Kentucky when snow falls on snow like it has this week.
Bubba G, you must have the dome centered right over Richmond. I was at Fayette Mall on Monday and the snow was deep there as well, before this one fell!
Me, too. I also have a farm full of animals and it’s no fun when we’re below freezing for days on end. They could sure use a break and I could take a break from the stress! Please, no freezing/cold rain next week. That’s way worse than snow and cold.
Actually I can remember a few springs starting in mid February. Looking at average temps by the end of February is in the low 50’s for central Kentucky. Another thing the record high on February the 1st for central Kentucky is 78 degrees. So it can happen. Bring on spring
Yes, these little drive-bys are nothing but annoying and frustrating. My area has not gotten nearly the snow that most everyone else has had.
It gets deep when they plow the parking lot. 🙂
🙂
Reminds me in Minnesota they can have piles of snow in parking lots two stories high that do not all melt until around May.
I don’t live in Kentucky but right on the Kentucky/Indiana border in Evansville/Vanderburgh county and this blog has been more accurate for our winter weather than our local meteorologists. I know the focus is KY and in particular, Central and Eastern Ky but we thank you here in Southwestern Indiana.
I do agree, small snow events are annoying, espically being off school (add days in summer) for only a little bit of snow! But, what I was saying earlier,,We are in the middle of winter season, don’t give up on a big snow, don’t just say come on spring time,,,the fact is we are many weeks away from spring…..I don’t want 40-45 and rain..now that would go beyond annoying-right? 65-75 will come when its supposed to come (In spring!)
I agree, the KY river I think plays some kind of roll in our snow totals in Richmond–it acts as a fence.
Haven’t seen anything on radar but we had light snow/flurries all morning.
Ready for a big snow before spring! Don’t get me wrong, I love spring too, planting veggies and such is a fav with me, but can we have a one time several-inch snow first..? 🙂
I agree. Our horses don’t want to be inside at all. They throw a fit to go outside and when it rains and then turns cold, their coats freeze. It’s impossible to comb out the ice and it’s definitely not fun. Our goats won’t leave the barn and all I hear is, “Baaaahhhhh.” As if I can do anything to change the weather. 🙂
Ironic, but same for us, since CB is not in most of our markets, but usually more accurate.
I pretty much have, based on trends and the biggest event in a long time gave us the low-snow sandwich. Same old song and dance since 1999 forward. Most of KY gets missed by the big events. They go north and south of us. We are the Big Snow Segway.
Next week looks more like our usual results: 33 degrees and lots of rain /mix and then 32 degees and less we get the tail end of the precipitation.
Darth is polishing up his helmet.
I think MarkLex might have coined it “Median”, which fits.
We are the Big Snow Median.
Think the radar may have been down again for a little while, but at the same time these lighter snow flurries and such don’t always get picked up well on radar, although it is showing up some though…

BengalFan, The KY river is a weather boundary. More than once have I crossed the bridge to find different weather on the other side.
new update.
Lol at these responses. I live in Louisville so I hope we can at least get snow in Northern Kentucky.
KP, I completely understand. With the weather like this, our horses go crazy if we keep them up, and then when we turn them out they want to come right back in. I’d love for it to warm up a bit soon, at least above freezing, so they could enjoy being out and we could get a break from frozen water buckets & tanks.
How is round two treating everybody?? Struggling here in Indiana. Make it stop!
