Good Sunday evening gang. I wanted to drop by for another update to bring the snow a little farther northward into Kentucky late tonight and Monday. Radar trends and the latest data all point to a slightly farther northward scenario.
While the heaviest snows should still stay just to our south… snow totals can hit three inches in many areas. Here is the new call…
We will continue to watch the trends overnight and update. Again… that is for late tonight into the daylight hours of Monday. Beyond that… snow will overspread the rest of the state quickly Monday evening into Tuesday morning. I will wait to see all the available data before making updates to that part of the forecast.
Parts of southern Kentucky are now under a Winter Weather Advisory for late tonight and Monday. I suspect more counties should be added to this… especially in southeastern Kentucky…
The Winter Storm Watch for northern Kentucky is for later Monday night through Tuesday night. Before all is said and done.. every county will be under some advisory or warning from the NWS.
Track the northward progress of the snows here…
Keep in mind a lot of the stuff on the northern edge is not reaching the ground yet as we will have to moisten up the atmosphere over the next several hours.
A Full update will come your way later tonight so check back. Take care.

Hope all the doubters of this system pushing further north than anticipated are no longer doubting. Thanks for the update!
FROM a post i left a few ins ago on the last session:
MAde it to ATLANTA at about 830pm. Starting to snow at a pretty good slip. A little freezing rain is mixed in with it too. EVERYTHING here is closing or has already closed. LOTS of flights cancelled too…. IF you are traveling this way by plane, best of luck! They are diverting everything to other airports. Will be an interesting next few days. Chris, I will get some pics of the weather down here to ya…
Heres a website to see whats happening here. http://www.11alive.com (Atlanta NBC)
Also, I passed at least 30 power trucks, most private contractors for utilities. Most had Michigan license plates. I have to hand it to them, they are definitly preparing for this storm as best as they can…
CBIV…Check this link out if you see this…I will also place it on WAVE3 Blog..Concerning the 1998 storm…http://www4.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-win/wwcgi.dll?wwNexrad~SelectedImage…Once up you can go next or back to see were the precip came from during this storm…
THINK SNOW…

Side note, if you want to see whats happening here check out 11alive.com (nbc atlanta). Also, I passed at least 30 electric utility trucks and tree removal trucks on the way down I-75. Most were private contractors from Michigan. I have to hand it to them, they are trying their best to prepare for the storm here!!!

sorry if my posts get duplicated. I keep going to moderation.
Getting snow rates over 1″ per hour in atlanta,GA.
Classic stuff. Some dude passed this guy going 60, then down the road this guy came upon a scene where that speeder had flipped over. Gotta love live cams.
Very cool. It’s pouring snow down there. They don’t see it often, so I’m glad their getting it.
Give it up! Ain’t gonna happen. Move on!
Checked into the hotel an hour ago, just started spitting snow. Now, a solid 2in on the ground. Coming down HARD too!!!
Where should the Dew points be for it to start snowing?
Its just a little change.
I just looked at the weather.com forecast for Lexington for the storm next week. They have changed the forecast from a wintry mix to snow showers for Saturday through Tuesday. This could be the big system we have all been waiting for!
Any chance Lexington gets in on some snow tonight?
bjenks, the link didn’t work & I’d love to see the info! Ack!
How does this more northern track affect tomorrow for central Ky?
Thanks for the update
This will be an appetizer for what we will see this weekend and next week. Looks like with the active wether systems in place and artic air it is just a matter of time before we do get a storm of meaningful proportions. Have to feel more confidence then in many past years when we all just sat around and hoped! The weekend storm is just reaching the Northwest or soon will. That is my take!
WW
NONE…
Snow will start in Lexington mid to late afternoon tomorrow…
I agree. Both weather.com and noaa have cooled down their forecasts for next weekend and have converted to all snow, at least for Lexington. Granted, the system is still a week away, but that shift is enough to make me optimistic.
75 backed up, I-20 shut down already. They cannot drive in snow here at all…
I second that, FREE ENES!
Let it SNOW!
Chris’s line for tonight and into the daylight hours tomorrow stops at the southern most point of Fayette Co. so I’d say it isn’t out of the question that Lex see’s a flake or two.
What a shame too.. I wanted so bad to see him on the floor here. No way we would have lost to UNC or Georgia with him playing.
TIF B and c-BIV…you might need to select date after site pulls up…Feb 06, 1998…Concerning the 1998 24″ storm…Link is http://www4.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-win/wwcgi.dll?wwNexrad~Images2 You might need to type it in. Here is some verbage I found on the same site…The storm system took a typical winter time path from the Gulf Coast and northeast along the Atlantic coast. However, due to the strength of the system and its slow movement, enough deep layered moisture was pulled into the system from the Atlantic Ocean, that the moisture was able to negotiate the Appalacian Mountains bringing heavy snows much further west than typical “nor’easters”. The initial heavy snows started on the evening of February 3 in the southeast parts of the Louisville CWA and then spread north reaching the Louisville metropolitan area by shortly before sunrise on February 4.
Does anyone know what the dew point/temp needs to be before snow will reach the ground? I am wondering what the difference between the two needed to be.
It is a shame! I wish he were here too but, let go of the free enes thing.Wen it’s over it’s over!
Let it snow!
So very cool…i remember going to bed with a forecast of 1″ from Tom Wills, Haha….oops! 23″ later
I think the dewpoint needs to rise to about what the temp. is.
Near the same…Once the dew points reach or exceeds temps precip will fall…
20°-21° would be enough to do the trick to allow the snow to hit the ground.
Thanks!
still pushing north..
Large power outage around the Rowan/Fleming line, around Muses Mills, Sharkey, and I-64 corridor….I believe that is Fleming-Mason power. Wal-Mart didn’t have power last I heard. Gonna get cold tonight for alot of people if they don’t get the power back on.
Nate-r u going to be in atlanta all week? I am supposed to come Thursday or Friday and would love to know about the conditions then–thanks!
Hmmm… gettin closer to E-Town.
Didn’t I hear from somebody that it wasn’t coming up this far north tonight? 😉
It sure is! Even if it starts out as a few hours of virga and we miss out on the precip that is above us in the clouds, it surely doesn’t hurt us. All this does is saturates the atmosphere for everyone so when the 2nd low moves in, all you see on the radar WILL be falling to the ground! So, it’s a win win situation, no matter if we get any accumulation from this 1st low or not. =-)
hmmmm gettin closer to E-Town.
Now didn’t I hear from somebody that it wasn’t coming this far north tonight?
Almost to E-Town!!
Is it gonna fall if it gets here?
Huntsville,AL NWS office forecasting 8″-12″ by noon tomorrow for Northern Alabama and southern Tenn. LOL…haven’t seen a snowstorm like that here in Southern KY in years, but yet Northern Al gets one…lol.
21 degrees, dew point 16, here in lebanon
dew point was 12 at about 10:15
Any reports from KY of snow reaching the ground yet?
Mike I agree 100% I can’t believe Alabama is getting foot of snow. I’m getting kinda upset because Kentucky is the state that gets storms like this and we have not seen one like this in a few years.I live in Louisville so I’ve seen some big snows, but not a foot in a few years. This is a joke!!!
I live in Wayne County which is situated on the KY/TN border. No snow at all yet. Not even the first flake! Hoping it’ll start any minute, though.
depending on where you live in Louisville, some of us got 12″ of snow Feb. 16th of last year. I live on the oldham/jeff co. line in NE lou. I remember there being a sharp cutoff in totals to the south and east counties, as they only picked up 2-6″!
WHERE IS THE UPDATE, CB USUALLY HAS IT UP BY NOW…….
Chill out derekharlan, he has a life you know…
I’m sure he’ll get it out as soon as he can.
I don’t think Derek meant anything bad about the update not being out yet. He was simply stating a fact and the fact is we all hang on Chris’s every word when these Winter Storms come around. We all appreciate what Chris does and think he goes above and beyond whats asked of him and we’re all really excited and impatient when it comes to snow. I don’t want to offend anyone, I’m just sayin….
I’ve got to post something looking like post on my website and you gave me nice idea. Thanks!
